1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;	1 Frères, je dois vous rappeler l’exemple de nos pères: tous ont passé sous la nuée et tous ont traversé la mer.
2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;	2 Tous ont reçu ce baptême de la nuée et de la mer qui les donnait à Moïse.
3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat;	3 Tous ont mangé du même aliment spirituel,
4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.	4 et tous ont bu de la même boisson spirituelle: leur eau jaillissait d’un rocher spirituel qui les accompagnait, et ce rocher était le Christ.
5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.	5 Et pourtant la plupart d’entre eux n’ont pas plu à Dieu: et leurs corps sont restés dans le désert.
6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.	6 Tout ce qui s’est passé là était déjà notre histoire, et nous devons nous garder des mauvais désirs qu’ils ont eus.
7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.	7 Ne soyez pas des adorateurs d’idoles, comme certains d’entre eux, et l’Écriture dit: Le peuple s’assit pour manger et pour boire, après quoi ils firent la fête.
8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.	8 Pas de prostitution: beaucoup d’entre eux y ont cédé et il en est mort 23 000 en un seul jour.
9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.	9 Ne mettez pas le Seigneur à l’épreuve: beaucoup d’entre eux l’ont mis à l’épreuve et ils sont morts piqués par les serpents.
10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.	10 Ne vous plaignez pas par derrière; beaucoup d’entre eux murmuraient ainsi et l’Exterminateur les a fait périr.
11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.	11 Tout ce qu’ils ont vécu là avait valeur d’exemple, et cela a été écrit pour mettre en garde ceux qui devaient connaître les derniers temps, c’est-à-dire nous.
12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.	12 Donc, que celui qui pense être debout prenne garde de ne pas tomber.
13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.	13 De fait, vous n’avez connu que des épreuves très ordinaires. Dieu est fidèle et ne permettra pas que vous soyez tentés au-delà de vos forces; il vous enverra en même temps que l’épreuve la force pour la supporter.
14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.	14 Donc, mes bien-aimés, fuyez l’idolâtrie.
15 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.	15 Je vous parle comme à des gens qui réfléchissent: pensez à ce que je vais dire.
16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?	16 Le calice de bénédiction que nous bénissons, n’est-ce pas une communion au sang du Seigneur? Et le pain que nous partageons, n’est-ce pas une communion au corps du Christ?
17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.	17 Nous sommes plusieurs, mais nous devenons un seul corps, car il n’y a qu’un seul pain et tous nous participons du même pain.
18 Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the alter?	18 Pensez au peuple d’Israël: quand ils mangent les victimes sacrifiées, ils entrent en communion avec l’autel, n’est-il pas vrai?
19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?	19 Je ne dis pas que les viandes des idoles sont réellement consacrées ou que l’idole existe réellement.
20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.	20 Mais les sacrifices des païens vont aux démons et non pas à Dieu, et je ne veux pas que vous entriez en communion avec les démons.
21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.	21 Vous ne pouvez pas boire à la fois le calice du Seigneur et le calice des démons. Vous ne pouvez pas en même temps prendre part à la table du Seigneur et à la table des démons.
22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?	22 Ou bien voulons-nous défier le Seigneur? Serions-nous plus forts que lui?
23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.	23 Tout est permis, mais tout n’est pas bon pour moi. Tout est permis, mais tout ne fait pas du bien:
24 Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.	24 que chacun pense, non pas à soi, mais aux autres.
25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:	25 Donc, tout ce qu’on vend au marché, mangez-en sans vous faire des scrupules de conscience,
26 For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.	26 car la terre appartient au Seigneur avec tout ce qui la recouvre.
27 If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.	27 Et si un non-croyant vous invite, et que vous désiriez aller chez lui, mangez ce qu’on vous présente et n’ayez pas de scrupules de conscience.
28 But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:	28 Mais si on vous dit: C’est de la viande consacrée! n’en prenez pas. Pensez à celui qui vous a avertis, et respectez sa conscience.
29 Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?	29 Je dis bien: la conscience de l’autre, non la vôtre. Mais faut-il que je fasse usage de ma liberté, si cela doit être critiqué par une autre conscience?
30 For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?	30 Est-il bon que je fasse usage de ce don de Dieu et lui en rende grâce, si cela doit être mal interprété?
31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.	31 Donc, que vous mangiez ou que vous buviez ou que vous fassiez quoi que ce soit, faites que tout soit pour la gloire de Dieu.
32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:	32 Ne scandalisez ni les Juifs, ni les Grecs, ni l’Église de Dieu.
33 Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.	33 Faites comme moi: je ne cherche pas mon propre intérêt mais celui des autres, c’est-à-dire leur salut, et je tâche de plaire à tous.
