1 And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.	1 Entrato nella città di Gerico, la stava attraversando.
2 And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.	2 Or un uomo di nome Zaccheo, che era capo dei pubblicani e ricco,
3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.	3 cercava di vedere chi fosse Gesù, ma non ci riusciva; c'era infatti molta gente ed egli era troppo piccolo di statura.
4 And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.	4 Allora corse avanti e, per poterlo vedere, si arrampicò sopra un sicomoro, perché Gesù doveva passare di là.
5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.	5 Gesù, quando arrivò in quel punto, alzò gli occhi e gli disse: "Zaccheo, scendi in fretta, perché oggi devo fermarmi a casa tua".
6 And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.	6 Scese subito e lo accolse con gioia.
7 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.	7 Vedendo ciò, tutti mormoravano: "E' andato ad alloggiare in casa di un peccatore!".
8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.	8 Ma Zaccheo, alzatosi, disse al Signore: "Signore, io do ai poveri la metà dei miei beni e se ho rubato a qualcuno gli restituisco il quadruplo".
9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.	9 Gesù gli rispose: "Oggi la salvezza è entrata in questa casa, perché anch'egli è figlio di Abramo.
10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.	10 Infatti il Figlio dell'uomo è venuto a cercare e a salvare ciò che era perduto".
11 And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.	11 Mentre essi stavano ad ascoltare queste cose, Gesù raccontò quest'altra parabola, perché era vicino a Gerusalemme ed essi credevano che la manifestazione del regno di Dio fosse imminente.
12 He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.	12 Disse dunque: "Un uomo di nobile famiglia se ne andò in un paese lontano per ricevere il titolo di re, e poi ritornare.
13 And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.	13 Chiamati dieci dei suoi servi, diede loro dieci mine, dicendo: "Fatele fruttificare fino a quando tornerò".
14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.	14 Ma i suoi concittadini lo odiavano e gli mandarono dietro alcuni rappresentanti a dire: "Non vogliamo che costui regni su di noi".
15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.	15 Ma quell'uomo divenne re e ritornò al suo paese e fece chiamare i servi ai quali aveva consegnato il denaro, per vedere quanto ciascuno ne avesse ricavato.
16 Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.	16 Si fece avanti il primo e disse: "Signore, la tua mina ne ha fruttato dieci".
17 And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.	17 Gli rispose: "Bene, servo buono; poiché sei stato fedele nel poco, ricevi il governo sopra dieci città".
18 And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.	18 Poi venne il secondo e disse: "Signore, la tua mina ne ha fruttato cinque".
19 And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.	19 Anche a questo disse: "Anche tu avrai l'amministrazione di cinque città".
20 And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:	20 Infine si fece avanti l'altro servo e disse: "Signore, ecco la tua mina che ho nascosto in un fazzoletto.
21 For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.	21 Ho avuto paura di te, perché sei un uomo severo: pretendi quello che non hai depositato e raccogli quello che non hai seminato".
22 And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:	22 Gli rispose: "Dalle tue parole ti giudico, servo malvagio! Sapevi che sono un uomo severo, che pretendo quello che non ho depositato e raccolgo quello che non ho seminato.
23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?	23 Perché allora non hai depositato il mio denaro alla banca? Al mio ritorno l'avrei ritirato con l'interesse".
24 And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.	24 Disse poi ai presenti: "Toglietegli la mina e datela a colui che ne ha dieci".
25 (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)	25 Gli risposero: "Signore, ne ha già dieci!".
26 For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.	26 "Vi dico: chi ha riceverà ancora di più; invece a chi ha poco sarà tolto anche quello che ha.
27 But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.	27 Intanto, conducete qui i miei nemici, quelli che non mi volevano come loro re. Conduceteli qui e uccideteli alla mia presenza".
28 And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.	28 Dopo questi discorsi, Gesù camminava in testa agli altri, salendo a Gerusalemme.
29 And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,	29 Quando fu vicino a Bètfage e a Betània, presso il monte detto degli Ulivi, mandò avanti due discepoli dicendo:
30 Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.	30 "Andate nel villaggio che sta qui di fronte; entrando, troverete un asinello legato sul quale non è mai salito nessuno; slegatelo e portatelo qui.
31 And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.	31 Se qualcuno vi chiederà: "Perché lo slegate?", voi risponderete così: "Il Signore ne ha bisogno".
32 And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.	32 I due discepoli andarono e trovarono le cose come egli aveva detto.
33 And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?	33 Mentre slegavano il puledro, i proprietari domandarono loro: "Perché slegate il puledro?".
34 And they said, The Lord hath need of him.	34 Essi risposero: "Il Signore ne ha bisogno".
35 And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.	35 Allora lo condussero a Gesù e, dopo aver coperto il puledro con i loro mantelli, vi fecero montare Gesù.
36 And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.	36 Via via che Gesù avanzava, la gente stendeva i mantelli sulla strada.
37 And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;	37 Quando fu vicino alla discesa del monte degli Ulivi, tutta la folla dei discepoli, esultando, cominciò a lodare a gran voce Dio per tutti i miracoli che aveva visto.
38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.	38 Gridavano: "Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore: egli è il re! In cielo pace e gloria nel più alto dei cieli".
39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.	39 Allora alcuni farisei che si trovavano tra la folla gli dissero: "Maestro, fa' tacere i tuoi discepoli!".
40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.	40 Ma egli rispose: "Vi dico che se taceranno costoro, si metteranno a gridare le pietre".
41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,	41 Quando fu vicino, alla vista della città, pianse su di essa,
42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.	42 dicendo: "Oh, se tu pure conoscessi, in questo giorno, quello che occorre alla tua pace! Ma ora ciò è stato nascosto ai tuoi occhi.
43 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,	43 Verranno sopra di te giorni nei quali i tuoi nemici ti circonderanno di trincee. Ti assedieranno e ti stringeranno da ogni parte.
44 And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.	44 Distruggeranno te e i tuoi abitanti, e non lasceranno in te pietra su pietra, perché tu non hai conosciuto il tempo nel quale sei stata visitata".
45 And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;	45 Entrato poi nel tempio, si mise a cacciare quelli che facevano commercio,
46 Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.	46 dicendo loro: "La mia casa sarà casa di preghiera. Voi, invece, ne avete fatto una caverna di ladri!".
47 And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,	47 E insegnava ogni giorno nel tempio. I capi dei sacerdoti e i dottori della legge cercavano di farlo perire, e così anche i capi del popolo.
48 And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.	48 Ma non sapevano come fare, perché tutto il popolo pendeva dalle sue labbra nell'ascoltarlo.
