KING JAMES BIBLECATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAIN
And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.1 And having entered, he walked through Jericho.
And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.2 And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. And he was the leader of the tax collectors, and he was wealthy.
And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.3 And he sought to see Jesus, to see who he was. But he was unable to do so, because of the crowd, for he was small in stature.
And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.4 And running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore tree, so that he might see him. For he was to pass near there.
And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.5 And when he had arrived at the place, Jesus looked up and saw him, and he said to him: “Zacchaeus, hurry down. For today, I should lodge in your house.”
And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.6 And hurrying, he came down, and he received him joyfully.
And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.7 And when they all saw this, they murmured, saying that he had turned aside to a sinful man.
And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.8 But Zacchaeus, standing still, said to the Lord: “Behold, Lord, one half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone in any matter, I will repay him fourfold.”
And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.9 Jesus said to him: “Today, salvation has come to this house; because of this, he too is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.10 For the Son of man has come to seek and to save what had been lost.”
And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.11 As they were listening to these things, continuing on, he spoke a parable, because he was nearing Jerusalem, and because they guessed that the kingdom of God might be manifested without delay.
He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.12 Therefore, he said: “A certain man of nobility traveled to a far away region, to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.
And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.13 And calling his ten servants, he gave them ten pounds, and he said to them: ‘Do business until I return.’
But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.14 But his citizens hated him. And so they sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this one to reign over us.’
And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.15 And it happened that he returned, having received the kingdom. And he ordered the servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called so that he would know how much each one had earned by doing business.
Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.16 Now the first approached, saying: ‘Lord, your one pound has earned ten pounds.’
And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.17 And he said to him: ‘Well done, good servant. Since you have been faithful in a small matter, you will hold authority over ten cities.’
And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.18 And the second came, saying: ‘Lord, your one pound has earned five pounds.’
And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.19 And he said to him, ‘And so, you shall be over five cities.’
And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:20 And another approached, saying: ‘Lord, behold your one pound, which I kept stored in a cloth.
For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.21 For I feared you, because you are an austere man. You take up what you did not lay down, and you reap what you did not sow.’
And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:22 He said to him: ‘By your own mouth, do I judge you, O wicked servant. You knew that I am an austere man, taking up what I did not lay down, and reaping what I did not sow.
Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?23 And so, why did you not give my money to the bank, so that, upon my return, I might have withdrawn it with interest?’
And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.24 And he said to the bystanders, ‘Take the pound away from him, and give it to him who has ten pounds.’
(And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)25 And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten pounds.’
For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.26 So then, I say to you, that to all who have, it shall be given, and he will have in abundance. And from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.
But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.27 ‘Yet truly, as for those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here, and put them to death before me.’ ”
And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.28 And having said these things, he went ahead, ascending to Jerusalem.
And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,29 And it happened that, when he had drawn near to Bethphage and Bethania, to the mount which is called Olivet, he sent two of his disciples,
Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.30 saying: “Go into the town which is opposite you. Upon entering it, you will find the colt of a donkey, tied, on which no man has ever sat. Untie it, and lead it here.
And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.31 And if anyone will ask you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this to him: ‘Because the Lord has requested its service.’ ”
And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.32 And those who were sent went out, and they found the colt standing, just as he told them.
And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?33 Then, as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
And they said, The Lord hath need of him.34 So they said, “Because the Lord has need of it.”
And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.35 And they led it to Jesus. And casting their garments on the colt, they helped Jesus onto it.
And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.36 Then, as he was traveling, they were laying down their garments along the way.
And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;37 And when he was now drawing near to the descent of Mount Olivet, the entire crowd of his disciples began to praise God joyfully, with a loud voice, over all the powerful works which they had seen,
Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.38 saying: “Blessed is the king who has arrived in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory on high!”
And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.39 And certain Pharisees within the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”
And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.40 And he said to them, “I tell you, that if these will keep silent, the stones themselves will cry out.”
And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,41 And when he drew near, seeing the city, he wept over it, saying:
Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.42 “If only you had known, indeed even in this your day, which things are for your peace. But now they are hidden from your eyes.
For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,43 For the days will overtake you. And your enemies will encircle you with a valley. And they will surround you and hem you in on every side.
And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.44 And they will knock you down to the ground, with your sons who are in you. And they will not leave stone upon stone within you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”
And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;45 And entering into the temple, he began to cast out those who sold in it, and those who bought,
Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.46 saying to them: “It is written: ‘My house is a house of prayer.’ But you have made it into a den of robbers.”
And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,47 And he was teaching in the temple daily. And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, and the leaders of the people were seeking to destroy him.
And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.48 But they could not find what to do to him. For all the people were listening to him attentively.
