Sirach 15

1 He that feareth the Lord will do good, and he that hath the knowledge of the law shall obtain her.	1 Chi teme Dio farà il bene, chi abbraccia la giustizia posse­derà la sapienza,
2 And as a mother shall she meet him, and receive him as a wife married of a virgin.	2 la quale gli an­drà incontro qual veneranda ma­dre, e qual vergine sposa lo acco­glierà.
3 With the bread of understanding shall she feed him, and give him the water of wisdom to drink.	3 Lo nutrirà col pane della vita e dell'intelligenza, lo disse­terà coll'acqua della salutare sa­pienza, starà ferma in lui, e non piegherà.
4 He shall be stayed upon her, and shall not be moved; and shall rely upon her, and shall not be confounded.	4 Lo terrà stretto e nonsarà confuso, lo farà grande tra i suoi compagni.
5 She shall exalt him above his neighbours, and in the midst of the congregation shall she open his mouth.	5 Gli farà aprir la bocca in mezzo all'adunanza, lo riempirà dello spirito di sapienza d'intelligenza, e lo coprirà colmanto della gloria;
6 He shall find joy and a crown of gladness, and she shall cause him to inherit an everlasting name.	6 ammasserà su di lui tesori di gioia e di allegrezza, e gli farà ereditare un no­me eterno.
7 But foolish men shall not attain unto her, and sinners shall not see her.	7 Gli uomini stolti non la possederanno, ma i prudentil e andranno incontro; gli uomini stolti non la vedranno, perchè essa sta lontana dalla superbia e dalla frode.
8 For she is far from pride, and men that are liars cannot remember her.	8 I menzogneri non si ricorderanno di lei, ma i veri­tieri si troveranno con lei e procederanno felicemente fino alla visione di Dio.
9 Praise is not seemly in the mouth of a sinner, for it was not sent him of the Lord.	9 La lode non è bella in bocca al peccatore;
10 For praise shall be uttered in wisdom, and the Lord will prosper it.	10 perchè la sapienza vien da Dio e la lode di Dio accompagnerà la sapienza e abbonderà nella bocca fedele, e il dominatore gliela donerà.
11 Say not thou, It is through the Lord that I fell away: for thou oughtest not to do the things that he hateth.	11 Non dire: « Per colpa di Dio sta lontana la sapienza » e non fare quello che Egli odia.
12 Say not thou, He hath caused me to err: for he hath no need of the sinful man.	12 Non dire: « Egli m'ha indotto in errore », perchè Egli non ha bisogno dei peccatori.
13 The Lord hateth all abomination; and they that fear God love it not.	13 Il Signore odia ogni abbominazione, e questa non deve essere amata da quelli che lo temono.
14 He himself made man from the beginning, and left him in the hand of his counsel;	14 Dìo da principio creò l'uomo e lo lasciò in balìa del suo arbitrio,
15 If thou wilt, to keep the commandments, and to perform acceptable faithfulness.	15 gli diede di più i suoi comandamenti e i suoi precetti.
16 He hath set fire and water before thee: stretch forth thy hand unto whether thou wilt.	16 Se tu osserverai i comandamenti e in perpetuo agirai secondo la fede a lui gradita, essi saranno la tua salvezza.
17 Before man is life and death; and whether him liketh shall be given him.	17 Egli ti ha messo davanti l'acqua e il fuoco; stendi la mano a quello che ti piace.
18 For the wisdom of the Lord is great, and he is mighty in power, and beholdeth all things:	18 Davanti all'uomo sta la vita e la morte, il bene e il male: gli sarà dato quello che egli sceglierà.
19 And his eyes are upon them that fear him, and he knoweth every work of man.	19 Or la sapienza di Dio è grande, Egli ha una potenza prodigiosa, e vede continuamente tutti.
20 He hath commanded no man to do wickedly, neither hath he given any man licence to sin.	20 Gli occhi del Signore sono rivolti verso quelli che lo temono, ed Egli conosce tutto ciò che fanno gli uomini.
	21 A nessuno ha comandato di fare il male, a nessuno ha dato il permesso di peccare.
	22 Perchè Egli non desidera d'avere un gran numero di figlio li infedeli e inutili.
