Sirach 15

1 He that feareth the Lord will do good, and he that hath the knowledge of the law shall obtain her.	1 Aki Istent féli, jót cselekszik, s aki kitart az igazság mellett, elnyeri azt.
2 And as a mother shall she meet him, and receive him as a wife married of a virgin.	2 Az pedig eléje megy, mint tisztes anya, mint szűz menyasszony fogadja őt;
3 With the bread of understanding shall she feed him, and give him the water of wisdom to drink.	3 táplálja őt az élet és értelem kenyerével, s itatja az üdvös bölcsesség vizével; támaszra talál benne, és meg nem inog,
4 He shall be stayed upon her, and shall not be moved; and shall rely upon her, and shall not be confounded.	4 megtartja őt, és meg nem szégyenül, felmagasztalja őt a társai előtt.
5 She shall exalt him above his neighbours, and in the midst of the congregation shall she open his mouth.	5 Megnyitja száját a gyülekezet körében, betölti őt a bölcsesség és értelem lelkével, s a dicsőség ruháját adja rá.
6 He shall find joy and a crown of gladness, and she shall cause him to inherit an everlasting name.	6 Elárasztja örömmel és ujjongással, s örök hírnevet juttat neki.
7 But foolish men shall not attain unto her, and sinners shall not see her.	7 Nem nyerik el azt a balga emberek, az okosak azonban megtalálják; nem látják meg azt az ostoba emberek, mert távol áll az gőgtől és csalárdságtól.
8 For she is far from pride, and men that are liars cannot remember her.	8 A hazug férfiak nem gondolnak vele, az igazmondó férfiak azonban nála találhatók, és sikerben van részük Isten látogatásáig.
9 Praise is not seemly in the mouth of a sinner, for it was not sent him of the Lord.	9 Nem illik a dicséret a bűnös szájába,
10 For praise shall be uttered in wisdom, and the Lord will prosper it.	10 mert a bölcsesség Istentől származik. Isten dicsérete ugyanis a bölcshöz illik, s a hívő szája van tele azzal, mert az Úr megadja azt neki.
11 Say not thou, It is through the Lord that I fell away: for thou oughtest not to do the things that he hateth.	11 Ne mondd: »Isten tartja távol!«, ne tégy olyasmit, amit ő gyűlöl.
12 Say not thou, He hath caused me to err: for he hath no need of the sinful man.	12 Ne mondd: »Ő vitt engem tévedésbe!«, mert nincs neki szüksége a gonosz emberekre.
13 The Lord hateth all abomination; and they that fear God love it not.	13 Gyűlöli az Úr a tévelygés minden undokságát, de azok előtt sem kedves az, akik félik őt.
14 He himself made man from the beginning, and left him in the hand of his counsel;	14 Megteremtette Isten az embert kezdetben, és őt saját belátására bízta:
15 If thou wilt, to keep the commandments, and to perform acceptable faithfulness.	15 adta még ezenfelül parancsait és törvényeit.
16 He hath set fire and water before thee: stretch forth thy hand unto whether thou wilt.	16 Ha meg akarod tartani a parancsokat, azok megtartanak téged, ha állandóan gyakorlod a hűséget, amely előtte kedves.
17 Before man is life and death; and whether him liketh shall be given him.	17 Vizet és tüzet helyezett eléd, amelyiket akarod, az után nyújtsd ki kezedet!
18 For the wisdom of the Lord is great, and he is mighty in power, and beholdeth all things:	18 Élet és halál, jó és rossz van az ember előtt, s azt kapja, ami kedvére van.
19 And his eyes are upon them that fear him, and he knoweth every work of man.	19 Mert nagy az Isten bölcsessége, erős a hatalma, és lát mindent szüntelen.
20 He hath commanded no man to do wickedly, neither hath he given any man licence to sin.	20 Az Úr szemei vannak azokon, akik félik őt, és számon tartja az ember minden cselekedetét. Senkinek sem hagyta meg, hogy gonoszul cselekedjen, és senkinek sem engedi meg, hogy vétkezzen. Nem kívánja hitetlen és haszontalan gyermekek nagy számát.
