Proverbs 20

1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.	1 O vinho é uma fonte de luxúria, e a embriaguez é cheia de desordens; todo aquele que põe nisto o seu gosto, não será sábio.
2 The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.	2 Como o rugido do leão, assim é o terror que o rei infunde; aquele que o irrita peca contra a sua vida.
3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.	3 É uma glória para o homem afastar-se de contendas; porém todos os insensatos se envolvem nelas.
4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.	4 O preguiçoso não quis lavrar por causa do frio; mendigará, pois, no verão, e não se lhe dará coisa alguma.
5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.	5 O pensamento é no coração do homem como uma água profunda, mas o homem sábio tirá-lo-á para fora.
6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?	6 Muitos homens se chamam compassivos, mas quem achará um homem (inteiramente) fiel?
7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.	7 O justo, que anda na sua integridade, deixará depois de si filhos ditosos.
8 A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.	8 O rei, que está assentado no seu trono de justiça, dissipa todo o mal, só com o seu olhar.
9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?	9 Quem pode dizer: O meu coração está puro, estou limpo de pecado?
10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.	10 Ter dois pesos e duas medidas, é objecto de abominação para o Senhor.
11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.	11 Pelas acções do menino se deduz se a sua conduta será (no futuro) pura e recta.
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.	12 O ouvido que ouve e o olho que vê, ambas estas coisas fez o Senhor.
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.	13 Não queiras ser amigo do sono, para que a pobreza te não oprima; abre os teus olhos (sê diligente), e terás pão em abundância.
14 It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.	14 Isto não vale nada, isto não vale nada, diz todo o comprador, e, depois de se retirar, então se gloriará.
15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.	15 Há oiro, há grande abundância de pedras preciosas; vaso precioso são os lábios do sábio.
16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.	16 Tira a roupa àquele que (imprudentemente) ficou por fiador dum desconhecido, leva-lhe o penhor do que se obrigou por estranhos.
17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.	17 O pão mal adquirido é gostoso ao homem; porém depois a sua boca será cheia de areias.
18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.	18 Os projectos corroboram-se pelos conselhos; e as guerras devem ser dirigidas com prudência.
19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.	19 O mexeriqueiro revela os segredos; com o que tem os lábios sempre abertos (para falar) não te familiarizes.
20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.	20 Aquele que amaldiçoa o seu pai e a sua mãe, apagar-se-á o seu luzeiro no meio das trevas.
21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.	21 A herança que alguém se apressa a adquirir (ilicitamente) no princípio, carecerá de bênção no fim. Não digas: Darei mai por mal; espera no Senhor, e ele te livrará.
22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.	23 Ter dois pesos é abominação diante de Deus; a balança falsa não é boa.
24 Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?	24 Os passos do homem são dirigidos pelo Senhor: mas que homem pode compreender o seu próprio destino?
25 It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make inquiry.	25 É uma ruína para o homem dizer inconsideradamente: "Consagrado", e só reflectir depois de ter feito votos.
26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.	26 O rei sábio dissipa os ímpios, e faz passar sobre eles a roda. O espirito do homem é uma lâmpada divina, a qual penetra todos os segredos do seu interior.
27 The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.	28 A bondade e a fidelidade guardam o rei, e o seu trono firma-se com a clemência.
29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.	29 A gala dos jovens é a sua força, e a glória dos velhos são as suas cãs.
30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.	30 Purgam-se os males pelas feridas cruentas, e também pelos golpes que chegam ao fundo das entranhas.
