υπολαβων δε ιωβ λεγει1 And Job, responding, said:
επ' αληθειας οιδα οτι ουτως εστιν πως γαρ εσται δικαιος βροτος παρα κυριω2 Truly, I know that it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with God.
εαν γαρ βουληται κριθηναι αυτω ου μη υπακουση αυτω ινα μη αντειπη προς ενα λογον αυτου εκ χιλιων3 If he chooses to contend with him, he is not able to respond to him once out of a thousand times.
σοφος γαρ εστιν διανοια κραταιος τε και μεγας τις σκληρος γενομενος εναντιον αυτου υπεμεινεν4 He is understanding in heart and mighty in strength; who has resisted him and yet had peace?
ο παλαιων ορη και ουκ οιδασιν ο καταστρεφων αυτα οργη5 He has moved mountains, and those whom he overthrew in his fury did not know it.
ο σειων την υπ' ουρανον εκ θεμελιων οι δε στυλοι αυτης σαλευονται6 He shakes the earth out of its place and its pillars tremble.
ο λεγων τω ηλιω και ουκ ανατελλει κατα δε αστρων κατασφραγιζει7 He commands the sun and it does not rise, and he closes the stars as if under a seal.
ο τανυσας τον ουρανον μονος και περιπατων ως επ' εδαφους επι θαλασσης8 He alone extends the heavens, and he walks upon the waves of the sea.
ο ποιων πλειαδα και εσπερον και αρκτουρον και ταμιεια νοτου9 He fashions Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the interior of the south.
ο ποιων μεγαλα και ανεξιχνιαστα ενδοξα τε και εξαισια ων ουκ εστιν αριθμος10 He accomplishes great and incomprehensible and miraculous things, which cannot be numbered.
εαν υπερβη με ου μη ιδω και εαν παρελθη με ουδ' ως εγνων11 If he approaches me, I will not see him; if he departs, I will not understand.
εαν απαλλαξη τις αποστρεψει η τις ερει αυτω τι εποιησας12 If he suddenly should question, who will answer him? Or who can say, “Why did you do so?”
αυτος γαρ απεστραπται οργην υπ' αυτου εκαμφθησαν κητη τα υπ' ουρανον13 God, whose wrath no one is able to resist, and under whom they bend who carry the world,
εαν δε μου υπακουσηται η διακρινει τα ρηματα μου14 what am I then, that I should answer him and exchange words with him?
εαν τε γαρ ω δικαιος ουκ εισακουσεται μου του κριματος αυτου δεηθησομαι15 And if I now have any justice, I will not respond, but will beseech my judge.
εαν τε καλεσω και υπακουση ου πιστευω οτι εισακηκοεν μου16 And if he should listen to me when I call, I would not believe that he had heard my voice.
μη γνοφω με εκτριψη πολλα δε μου τα συντριμματα πεποιηκεν δια κενης17 For he will crush me in a whirlwind and multiply my wounds, even without cause.
ουκ εα γαρ με αναπνευσαι ενεπλησεν δε με πικριας18 He does not permit my spirit to rest, and he fills me with bitterness.
οτι μεν γαρ ισχυι κρατει τις ουν κριματι αυτου αντιστησεται19 If strength is sought, he is most strong; if equity in judgment, no one would dare to give testimony for me.
εαν γαρ ω δικαιος το στομα μου ασεβησει εαν τε ω αμεμπτος σκολιος αποβησομαι20 If I wanted to justify myself, my own mouth will condemn me; if I would reveal my innocence, he would prove me depraved.
ειτε γαρ ησεβησα ουκ οιδα τη ψυχη πλην οτι αφαιρειται μου η ζωη21 And if I now became simple, my soul would be ignorant even of this, and my life would weary me.
διο ειπον μεγαν και δυναστην απολλυει οργη22 There is one thing that I have said: both the innocent and the impious he consumes.
οτι φαυλοι εν θανατω εξαισιω αλλα δικαιοι καταγελωνται23 If he scourges, let him kill all at once, and not laugh at the punishment of the innocent.
παραδεδονται γαρ εις χειρας ασεβους προσωπα κριτων αυτης συγκαλυπτει ει δε μη αυτος τις εστιν24 Since the earth has been given into the hand of the impious, he covers the face of its judges; for if it is not him, then who is it?
ο δε βιος μου εστιν ελαφροτερος δρομεως απεδρασαν και ουκ ειδοσαν25 My days have been swifter than a messenger; they have fled and have not seen goodness.
η και εστιν ναυσιν ιχνος οδου η αετου πετομενου ζητουντος βοραν26 They have passed by like ships carrying fruits, just like an eagle flying to food.
εαν τε γαρ ειπω επιλησομαι λαλων συγκυψας τω προσωπω στεναξω27 If I say: “By no means will I speak this way.” I change my face and I am tortured with sorrow.
σειομαι πασιν τοις μελεσιν οιδα γαρ οτι ουκ αθωον με εασεις28 I have dreaded all my works, knowing that you did not spare the offender.
επειδη δε ειμι ασεβης δια τι ουκ απεθανον29 Yet, if I am also just as impious, why have I labored in vain?
εαν γαρ απολουσωμαι χιονι και αποκαθαρωμαι χερσιν καθαραις30 If I had been washed with snow-like waters, and my hands were shining like the cleanest thing,
ικανως εν ρυπω με εβαψας εβδελυξατο δε με η στολη31 yet you would plunge me in filth, and my own garments would abhor me.
ου γαρ ει ανθρωπος κατ' εμε ω αντικρινουμαι ινα ελθωμεν ομοθυμαδον εις κρισιν32 For even I would not answer a man who were like myself, nor one who could be heard with me equally in judgment.
ειθε ην ο μεσιτης ημων και ελεγχων και διακουων ανα μεσον αμφοτερων33 There is no one who could both prevail in argument and in placing his hand between the two.
απαλλαξατω απ' εμου την ραβδον ο δε φοβος αυτου μη με στροβειτω34 Let him take his staff away from me, and let not the fear of him terrify me.
και ου μη φοβηθω αλλα λαλησω ου γαρ ουτω συνεπισταμαι35 I will speak and I will not fear him, for in fearfulness I am not able to respond.
