1 Wisdom hath built herself a house, she hath hewn her out seven pillars.1 Wisdom has built herself a house, she has hewn her seven pil ars,
2 She hath slain her victims, mingled her wine, and set forth her table.2 she has slaughtered her beasts, drawn her wine, she has laid her table.
3 She hath sent her maids to invite to the tower, and to the walls of the city:3 She has despatched her maidservants and proclaimed from the heights above the city,
4 Whosoever is a little one, let him come to me. And to the unwise she said:4 'Who is simple? Let him come this way.' To the fool she says,
5 Come, eat my bread, and drink the wine which I have mingled for you.5 'Come and eat my bread, drink the wine which I have drawn!
6 Forsake childishness, and live, and walk by the ways of prudence.6 Leave foolishness behind and you wil live, go forwards in the ways of perception.'
7 He that teacheth a scorner, doth an injury to himself: and he that rebuketh a wicked man, getteth himself a blot.7 Reprove a mocker and you attract contempt, rebuke the wicked and you attract dishonour.
8 Rebuke not a scorner lest he hate thee. Rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.8 Do not rebuke the mocker, he wil hate you. Rebuke the wise and he wil love you for it.
9 Give an occasion to a wise man, and wisdom shall be added to him. Teach a just man, and he shall make haste to receive it.9 Be open with the wise, he grows wiser stil , teach the upright, he wil gain yet more.
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is prudence.10 The first principle of wisdom is the fear of Yahweh, What God's holy ones know -- this isunderstanding.
11 For by me shall thy days be multiplied, and years of life shall be added to thee.11 For by me your days wil be multiplied, and your years of life increased.
12 If thou be wise, thou shalt be so to thyself: and if a scorner, thou alone shalt bear the evil.12 Are you wise? You are wise to your own good. A mocker? The burden is yours alone.
13 A foolish woman and clamorous, and full of allurements, and knowing nothing at all,13 A silly woman acts on impulse, is foolish and knows nothing.
14 Sat at the door of her house, upon a seat, in a high place of the city,14 She sits at the door of her house, on a throne high up in the city,
15 To call them that pass by the way, and go on their journey:15 cal ing to the passers-by, who are walking straight past on their way,
16 He that is a little one, let him turn to me. And to the fool she said:16 'Who is simple? Turn aside, come over here.' To the fool she says,
17 Stolen waters are sweeter, and hid den bread is more pleasant.17 'Stolen waters are sweet, and bread tastes better when eaten in secret.'
18 And he did not know that giants are there, and that her guests are in the depths of hell. The Parables of Solomon18 But the fool does not know that this is where the Shades are and that her guests are already in thevales of Sheol.
