EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Entonces Elifaz de Temán tomó la palabra y dijo:	1 Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:
2 ¿Se atrevería alguien a hablarte, estando tú tan deprimido? Pero ¿quién puede contener sus palabras?	2 If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it ill, but who can withhold the words he hath conceived?
3 Tú has aleccionado a mucha gente y has fortalecido las manos debilitadas;	3 Behold thou hast taught many, and thou hast strengthened the weary hands:
4 tus palabras sostuvieron al que tropezaba y has robustecido las rodillas vacilantes.	4 Thy words have confirmed them that were staggering, and thou hast strengthened the trembling knees:
5 Pero ahora te llega el turno, y te deprimes, te ha tocado a ti, y estás desconcertado.	5 But now the scourge is come upon thee, and thou faintest: it hath touched thee, and thou art troubled.
6 ¿Acaso tu piedad no te infunde confianza y tu vida íntegra no te da esperanza?	6 Where is thy fear, thy fortitude, thy patience, and the perfection of thy ways?
7 Recuerda esto: ¿quién pereció siendo inocente o dónde fueron exterminados los hombres rectos?	7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished being innocent? or when were the just destroyed?
8 Por lo que he visto, los que cultivan la maldad y siembran la miseria, cosechan eso mismo:	8 On the contrary I have seen those who work iniquity, and sow sorrows, and reap them,
9 ellos perecen bajo el aliento de Dios, desaparecen al soplo de su ira.	9 Perishing by the blast of God, and consumed by the spirit of his wrath.
10 Los leones cesan de rugir y bramar y los dientes de sus cachorros son quebrados;	10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of the whelps of lions are broken:
11 el león perece por falta de presa] y las crías de la leona se dispersan.	11 The tiger hath perished for want of prey, and the young lions are scattered abroad.
12 Una palabra me llegó furtivamente, su leve susurro cautivó mis oídos.	12 Now there was a word spoken to me in private, and my ears by stealth as it were received the veins of its whisper.
13 Entre las pesadillas de las visiones nocturnas, cuando un profundo sopor invada a los hombres.	13 In the horror of a vision by night, when deep sleep is wont to hold men,
14 me sobrevino un temor, un escalofrío, que estremeció todos mis huesos:	14 Fear seized upon me, and trembling, and all my bones were affrighted:
15 una ráfaga de viento para sobre mi rostro, eriza los pelos de mi cuerpo;	15 And when a spirit passed before me, the hair of my flesh stood up.
16 alguien está de pie, pero no reconozco su semblante, es sólo una forma delante de mis ojos; hay un silencio, y luego oigo una voz:	16 There stood one whose countenance I knew not, an image before my eyes, and I heard the voice as it were of a gentle wind:
17 ¿Puede un mortal ser justo ante Dios? ¿Es puro un hombre ante su Creador?	17 Shall man be justified in comparison of God, or shall a man be more pure than his maker?
18 Si él no se fía de sus propios servidores y hasta en sus ángeles encuentra errores,	18 Behold they that serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he found wickedness:
19 ¡cuánto más en los que habitan en casas de arcilla, y tienen sus cimientos en el polvo! Ellos son aplastados como una polilla,	19 How much more shall they that dwell in houses of clay, who have an earthly foundation, be consumed as with the moth?
20 de la noche a la mañana quedan pulverizados: sin que nadie se preocupe, perecen para siempre.	20 From morning till evening they shall be cut down: and because no one understandeth, they shall perish for ever.
21 ¿No se les arranca la estaca de su carpa, y mueren por falta de sabiduría?	21 And they that shall be left, shall be taken away from them: they shall die, and not in wisdom.
