SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Há lugares de onde se tira a prata, lugares onde o ouro é apurado;	1 Silver has its mines, and gold a place for refining.
2 o ferro é extraído do solo, o cobre é extraído de uma pedra fundida.	2 Iron is extracted from the earth, the smelted rocks yield copper.
3 Foi posto um fim às trevas, escavaram-se as últimas profundidades da rocha obscura e sombria.	3 Man makes an end of darkness, to the utmost limit he digs the black rock in shadow dark as death.
4 Longe dos lugares habitados {o mineiro} abre galerias que são ignoradas pelos pés dos transeuntes; suspenso, vacila longe dos humanos.	4 Foreigners bore into ravines in unfrequented places, swinging suspended far from human beings.
5 A terra, que produz o pão, é sacudida em suas entranhas como se fosse pelo fogo.	5 That earth from which bread comes is ravaged underground by fire.
6 As rochas encerram a safira, assim como o pó do ouro.	6 There, the rocks have veins of sapphire and their dust contains gold.
7 A águia não conhece a vereda, o olho do abutre não a viu;	7 That is a path unknown to birds of prey, unseen by the eye of any vulture;
8 os altivos animais não a pisaram, o leão não passou por ela.	8 a path not trodden by the lordly beasts, where no lion ever walked.
9 O homem põe a mão no sílex, derruba as montanhas pela base;	9 Man attacks the flint, upturning mountains by their roots.
10 fura galerias nos rochedos, o olho pode ver nelas todos os tesouros.	10 He cuts canals through the rock, on the watch for anything precious.
11 Explora as nascentes dos rios, e põe a descoberto o que estava escondido.	11 He explores the sources of rivers, bringing hidden things to light.
12 Mas a sabedoria, de onde sai ela? Onde está o jazigo da inteligência?	12 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?
13 O homem ignora o caminho dela, ninguém a encontra na terra dos vivos.	13 No human being knows the way to her, she is not to be found on earth where they live.
14 O abismo diz: Ela não está em mim. Não está comigo, diz o mar.	14 'She is not in me,' says the Abyss; 'Nor here,' replies the Sea.
15 Não pode ser adquirida com ouro maciço, não pode ser comprada a peso de prata.	15 She cannot be bought with solid gold, nor paid for with any weight of silver,
16 Não pode ser posta em balança com o ouro de Ofir, com o ônix precioso ou a safira.	16 nor valued against gold of Ophir, precious agate or sapphire.
17 Não pode ser comparada nem ao ouro nem ao vidro, ninguém a troca por vaso de ouro fino.	17 Neither gold nor glass compares with her, for her, a vase of fine gold would be no exchange,
18 Quanto ao coral e ao cristal, nem se fala, a sabedoria vale mais do que as pérolas.	18 let alone coral or crystal: better go fishing for Wisdom than for pearls!
19 Não pode ser igualada ao topázio da Etiópia, não pode ser equiparada ao mais puro ouro.	19 Topaz from Cush is worthless in comparison, and gold, even refined, is valueless.
20 De onde vem, pois, a sabedoria? Onde está o jazigo da inteligência?	20 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?
21 Um véu a oculta de todos os viventes, até das aves do céu ela se esconde.	21 She cannot be seen by any living creature, she is hidden from the birds of the sky.
22 Dizem o inferno e a morte: Apenas ouvimos falar dela.	22 Perdition and Death both say, 'We have heard only rumours of her.'
23 Deus conhece o caminho para encontrá-la, é ele quem sabe o seu lugar,	23 God alone understands her path and knows where she is to be found.
24 porque ele vê até os confins da terra, e enxerga tudo o que há debaixo do céu.	24 (For he sees to the remotest parts of the earth, and observes al that lies under heaven.)
25 Quando ele se ocupava em pesar os ventos, e em regular a medida das águas,	25 When he wil ed to give weight to the wind and measured out the waters with a gauge,
26 quando fixava as leis da chuva, e traçava uma rota aos relâmpagos,	26 when he imposed a law on the rain and mapped a route for thunderclaps to fol ow,
27 então a viu e a descreveu, penetrou-a e escrutou-a.	27 then he saw and evaluated her, looked her through and through, assessing her.
28 Depois disse ao homem: O temor do Senhor, eis a sabedoria; fugir do mal, eis a inteligência.	28 Then he said to human beings, 'Wisdom? - that is fear of the Lord; Intel igence? - avoidance of evil.'
