Біблія	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Сталося ж того часу, що Юда відділився від своїх братів і пішов до одного адуламійця, на ім’я Хіра.	1 It happened at about that time that Judah left his brothers, to go down and settle with a certainAdul amite called Hirah.
2 Побачив він там дочку одного ханаанця, на ім’я Шуа, взяв собі за жінку й увійшов до неї.	2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite cal ed Shua. He made her his wife and slept with her.
3 Вона зачала і вродила сина та й він дав йому ім’я Ер.	3 She conceived and gave birth to a son whom she named Er.
4 Зачала знову і вродила сина й назвала його Онан.	4 She conceived again and gave birth to a son whom she named Onan.
5 Та й ще раз вона вродила сина й дала йому ім’я Шела; а було це в Кезіві, як вона його породила.	5 Yet again she gave birth to a son whom she named Shelah. She was at Chezib when she gave birthto him.
6 Згодом узяв Юда своєму первісткові Ерові жінку, на ім’я Тамара.	6 Judah took a wife for his first-born Er, and her name was Tamar.
7 Але Ер, первенець Юди, був лихий в очах Господніх, і Господь убив його.	7 But Er, Judah's first-born, offended Yahweh, and Yahweh kil ed him.
8 Тож Юда сказав до Онана: Ввійди до жінки твого брата як дівер, сповни твій обов’язок, щоб зберегти потомство твоєму братові.	8 Then Judah said to Onan, 'Take your brother's wife, and do your duty as her brother-in-law, tomaintain your brother's line.'
9 Знав же Онан, що це не його буде потомство, тож коли він увіходив до жінки свого брата, то викидав сім’я на землю, щоб не дати потомства братові своєму.	9 But Onan, knowing that the line would not count as his, spilt his seed on the ground every time heslept with his brother's wife, to avoid providing offspring for his brother.
10 Не сподобалося Господові, що цей учинив, і він убив його теж.	10 What he did was offensive to Yahweh, who killed him too.
11 Тож каже Юда Тамарі, своїй невістці: Сиди вдовою в домі свого батька, доки не виросте Шела, мій син. Бо думав собі: Якби ж то не вмер і цей, як його брати. Пішла ж Тамара до дому свого батька і відтоді сиділа там.	11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, 'Go home as a widow to your father, until my sonShelah grows up,' for he was thinking, 'He must not die like his brothers.' So Tamar went home to her father.
12 Як минуло вже чимало часу, дочка Шуа, жінка Юди, померла. І коли Юда вивершив жалобу, пішов він стригти вівці у Тімну, він і його друг Хіра з Адулламу.	12 A long time passed, and then Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died. After Judah had beencomforted he went up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
13 Про те сповіщено Тамару: он, мовляв, твій свекор, іде в Тімну стригти свої вівці.	13 When Tamar was told, 'Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep,'
14 Тож скинула вона з себе вдовичу одежу, накрилась наміткою, затулилася та й сіла при вході в Енаїм, що при дорозі до Тімни, бо бачила вона, що Шела вже виріс, та не дали йому її за жінку.	14 she changed out of her widow's clothes, wrapped a veil around her to disguise herself, and sat downat the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that, although Shelah was grown up, shehad not been given to him as his wife.
15 Коли побачив її Юда, подумав, що то повія, бо вона своє лице заслонила.	15 Judah, seeing her, took her for a prostitute, since her face was veiled.
16 Тож завернув до неї з дороги й каже: Ануж увійду до тебе! Бо не знав. що то його невістка. А вона каже: Що даси мені, як увійдеш до мене?	16 Going up to her on the road, he said, 'Here, let me sleep with you.' He did not know that she was hisdaughter-in-law. 'What wil you give me for sleeping with you?' she asked.
17 Він же відповів: Пошлю тобі козеня з отари. На це вона сказала: Чи даси завдаток, поки пришлеш?	17 'I wil send you a kid from the flock,' he said. 'Agreed, if you give me a pledge until you send it,' shereplied.
18 А він питає: Який завдаток маю тобі дати? Вона й каже: Твою печатку, твою мотузку й твою палицю, що в твоїй руці. І дав він їй те й увійшов до неї, та й вона зачала від нього.	18 'What pledge shal I give you?' he asked. 'Your seal and cord and the staff you are holding,' shereplied. He gave them to her and slept with her, and she conceived by him.
19 По тому вона встала, пішла додому, скинула намітку з себе й надягнула знов одіж удовицтва свого.	19 Then she got up and left him and, taking off her veil, resumed her widow's weeds.
20 Тим часом Юда послав козеня через свого друга з Адулламу відобрати заставу від жінки, але той не знайшов її.	20 Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adul amite, to recover the pledge from the woman. But he did notfind her.
21 Питав він місцевих людей: Де та повія, що була в Енаїмі при дорозі? А вони відповідали: Не було тут ніякої повії.	21 He enquired from the men of the place, 'Where is the prostitute who was by the roadside at Enaim?''There has been no prostitute there,' they answered.
22 Тож повернувся він до Юди й каже: Не знайшов я там її, та й місцеві люди казали: , ,Не було тут ніякої повії.	22 So returning to Judah he said, 'I did not find her. What is more, the men of the place told me therehad been no prostitute there.'
23 Тоді каже Юда: Нехай собі бере, аби з нас люди не сміялись: ось я був послав козеня, а ти не знайшов її.	23 'Let her keep the things,' Judah said, 'or we shal become a laughing-stock. At least I sent her thiskid, even though you did not find her.'
24 По якихось трьох місяцях повідомлено Юду: Зблудила, мовляв, Тамара, твоя невістка, ба й більше: завагітніла вона від блуду. А Юда сказав: Нехай виведуть її геть і спалять!	24 About three months later, Judah was told, 'Your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore,she is pregnant, as a result of her misconduct.' 'Bring her out,' Judah ordered, 'and let her be burnt alive!'
25 Коли її виводили, вона послала своєму свекрові сказати: Від чоловіка, чиї оці речі, я зачала. І додала: Пізнавай, будь ласка, чиї оці речі: печатка, мотузка й палиця.	25 But as she was being led off, she sent word to her father-in-law, 'It was the owner of these whomade me pregnant. Please verify', she said, 'whose seal and cord and staff these are.'
26 Тоді Юда пізнав їх і сказав: Вона слушніша від мене, бо я не дав їй Шелу, мого сина!	26 Judah recognised them and said, 'She was right and I was wrong, since I did not give her to my sonShelah.' He had no further intercourse with her.
27 Коли ж настав їй час родити, ось — близнята в її лоні.	27 When the time for her confinement came, there were twins in her womb!
28 І як вона породила, висунуло одне ручку, а повитуха схопила і прив’язала до ручки червону нитку, кажучи: Це вийшло перше.	28 During the delivery, one of them put out a hand, and the midwife caught it and tied a scarlet thread toit, indicating that this was the first to arrive.
29 Та й сталось: коли воно назад потягло ручку — аж тут його брат вийшов. І каже вона: Як же ти прорвався! І назвала його ім’ям Перец.	29 Whereupon, he drew back his hand, and out came his brother. Then she said, 'What a breach youhave opened for yourself!' So he was named Perez.
30 По тому вийшов його брат, у якого на рученяті була червона нитка. І дала йому ім’я Зерах.	30 Then his brother came out with the scarlet thread on his hand, so he was named Zerah.
