VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
So if in Christ there is anything that will move you, any incentive in love, any fel owship in the Spirit, anywarmth or sympathy -- I appeal to you,
implete gaudium meum ut idem sapiatis, eamdem caritatem habentes, unanimes, idipsum sentientes,2 make my joy complete by being of a single mind, one in love, one in heart and one in mind.
nihil per contentionem, neque per inanem gloriam : sed in humilitate superiores sibi invicem arbitrantes,3 Nothing is to be done out of jealousy or vanity; instead, out of humility of mind everyone should givepreference to others,
everyone pursuing not selfish interests but those of others.
Make your own the mind of Christ Jesus:
qui cum in forma Dei esset, non rapinam arbitratus est esse se æqualem Deo :6 Who, being in the form of God, did not count equality with God something to be grasped.
sed semetipsum exinanivit, formam servi accipiens, in similitudinem hominum factus, et habitu inventus ut homo.7 But he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, becoming as human beings are; and being in everyway like a human being,
Humiliavit semetipsum factus obediens usque ad mortem, mortem autem crucis.8 he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross.
Propter quod et Deus exaltavit illum, et donavit illi nomen, quod est super omne nomen :9 And for this God raised him high, and gave him the name which is above al other names;
ut in nomine Jesu omne genu flectatur cælestium, terrestrium et infernorum,10 so that al beings in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld, should bend the knee at the name ofJesus
et omnis lingua confiteatur, quia Dominus Jesus Christus in gloria est Dei Patris.
and that every tongue should acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Itaque carissimi mei (sicut semper obedistis), non ut in præsentia mei tantum, sed multo magis nunc in absentia mea, cum metu et tremore vestram salutem operamini.12 So, my dear friends, you have always been obedient; your obedience must not be limited to timeswhen I am present. Now that I am absent it must be more in evidence, so work out your salvation in fear andtrembling.
It is God who, for his own generous purpose, gives you the intention and the powers to act.
Omnia autem facite sine murmurationibus et hæsitationibus :14 Let your behaviour be free of murmuring and complaining
ut sitis sine querela, et simplices filii Dei, sine reprehensione in medio nationis pravæ et perversæ : inter quos lucetis sicut luminaria in mundo,15 so that you remain faultless and pure, unspoilt children of God surrounded by a deceitful andunderhand brood, shining out among them like bright stars in the world,
verbum vitæ continentes ad gloriam meam in die Christi, quia non in vacuum cucurri, neque in vacuum laboravi.16 proffering to it the Word of life. Then I shall have reason to be proud on the Day of Christ, for it wil notbe for nothing that I have run the race and toiled so hard.
Sed et si immolor supra sacrificium, et obsequium fidei vestræ, gaudeo, et congratulor omnibus vobis.17 Indeed, even if my blood has to be poured as a libation over your sacrifice and the offering of yourfaith, then I shal be glad and join in your rejoicing-
and in the same way, you must be glad and join in my rejoicing.
I hope, in the Lord Jesus, to send Timothy to you soon, so that my mind may be set at rest when I hearhow you are.
Neminem enim habeo tam unanimem, qui sincera affectione pro vobis sollicitus sit.20 There is nobody else that I can send who is like him and cares as sincerely for your well-being;
Omnes enim quæ sua sunt quærunt, non quæ sunt Jesu Christi.21 they al want to work for themselves, not for Jesus Christ.
Experimentum autem ejus cognoscite, quia sicut patri filius, mecum servivit in Evangelio.22 But you know what sort of person he has proved himself, working with me for the sake of the gospellike a son with his father.
Hunc igitur spero me mittere ad vos, mox ut videro quæ circa me sunt.23 That is the man, then, that I am hoping to send to you immediately I can make out what is going tohappen to me;
Confido autem in Domino quoniam et ipse veniam ad vos cito.24 but I am confident in the Lord that I shal come myself, too, before long.
Necessarium autem existimavi Epaphroditum fratrem, et cooperatorem, et commilitonem meum, vestrum autem apostolum, et ministrum necessitatis meæ, mittere ad vos :25 Nevertheless I thought it essential to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fel ow-worker andcompanion-in-arms since he came as your representative to look after my needs;
quoniam quidem omnes vos desiderabat : et mœstus erat, propterea quod audieratis illum infirmatum.26 because he was missing you al and was worrying because you had heard that he was il .
Nam et infirmatus est usque ad mortem : sed Deus misertus est ejus : non solum autem ejus, verum etiam et mei, ne tristitiam super tristitiam haberem.27 Indeed he was seriously il and nearly died; but God took pity on him -- and not only on him but also onme, to spare me one grief on top of another.
Festinantius ergo misi illum, ut viso eo iterum gaudeatis, et ego sine tristitia sim.28 So I am sending him back as promptly as I can so that you wil have the joy of seeing him again, andthat wil be some comfort to me in my distress.
Excipite itaque illum cum omni gaudio in Domino, et ejusmodi cum honore habetote ;29 Welcome him in the Lord, then, with al joy; hold people like him in honour,
quoniam propter opus Christi usque ad mortem accessit, tradens animam suam ut impleret id quod ex vobis deerat erga meum obsequium.30 because it was for Christ's work that he came so near to dying, risking his life to do the duty to mewhich you could not do yourselves.
