VULGATA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens :	1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
2 Ulciscere prius filios Israël de Madianitis, et sic colligeris ad populum tuum.	2 'Exact the ful vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites. Afterwards you will be gathered to yourpeople.'
3 Statimque Moyses : Armate, inquit, ex vobis viros ad pugnam, qui possint ultionem Domini expetere de Madianitis.	3 Moses said to the people, 'Some of you are to take up arms for Yahweh's campaign against Midian,to carry out the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian.
4 Mille viri de singulis tribubus eligantur ex Israël qui mittantur ad bellum.	4 You will put a thousand men in the field from each of the tribes of Israel.'
5 Dederuntque millenos de singulis tribubus, id est, duodecim millia expeditorum ad pugnam :	5 In this way Israel's thousands provided twelve thousand men equipped for war, one thousand fromeach tribe:
6 quos misit Moyses cum Phinees filio Eleazari sacerdotis, vasa quoque sancta, et tubas ad clangendum tradidit ei.	6 Moses put them in the field, one thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar,to go with them carrying the sacred objects and the trumpets for the battle cry.
7 Cumque pugnassent contra Madianitas atque vicissent, omnes mares occiderunt,	7 They made war on Midian, as Yahweh had ordered Moses, and put every male to death.
8 et reges eorum, Evi, et Recem, et Sur, et Hur, et Rebe, quinque principes gentis : Balaam quoque filium Beor interfecerunt gladio.	8 What is more, they kil ed the kings of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the five Midianite kings;they also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.
9 Ceperuntque mulieres eorum, et parvulos, omniaque pecora, et cunctam supellectilem : quidquid habere potuerant depopulati sunt :	9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and their little ones captive and carried off al their cattle, altheir flocks and al their goods as booty.
10 tam urbes quam viculos et castella flamma consumpsit.	10 They set fire to the towns where they lived and to al their encampments.
11 Et tulerunt prædam, et universa quæ ceperant tam ex hominibus quam ex jumentis,	11 Then, taking al their booty, everything they had captured, human and animal,
12 et adduxerunt ad Moysen, et Eleazarum sacerdotem, et ad omnem multitudinem filiorum Israël : reliqua autem utensilia portaverunt ad castra in campestribus Moab juxta Jordanem contra Jericho.	12 they brought the captives, spoil and booty to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the whole community ofIsraelites at the camp on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho.
13 Egressi sunt autem Moyses et Eleazar sacerdos, et omnes principes synagogæ, in occursum eorum extra castra.	13 Moses, the priest Eleazar and al the leaders of the community went out of the camp to meet them.
14 Iratusque Moyses principibus exercitus, tribunis, et centurionibus qui venerant de bello,	14 Moses was enraged with the officers of the army, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, who had come back from this military expedition.
15 ait : Cur feminas reservastis ?	15 He said, 'Why have you spared the life of al the women?
16 nonne istæ sunt, quæ deceperunt filios Israël ad suggestionem Balaam, et prævaricari vos fecerunt in Domino super peccato Phogor, unde et percussus est populus ?	16 They were the very ones who, on Balaam's advice, caused the Israelites to be unfaithful to Yahwehin the affair at Peor: hence the plague which struck Yahweh's community.
17 ergo cunctos interficite quidquid est generis masculini, etiam in parvulis : et mulieres, quæ noverunt viros in coitu, jugulate :	17 So kil al the male children and kil al the women who have ever slept with a man;
18 puellas autem et omnes feminas virgines reservate vobis :	18 but spare the lives of the young girls who have never slept with a man, and keep them foryourselves.
19 et manete extra castra septem diebus. Qui occiderit hominem, vel occisum tetigerit, lustrabitur die tertio et septimo.	19 As for you, bivouac outside the camp for seven days, everyone who has kil ed anyone or touched acorpse. Purify yourselves and your prisoners on the third and seventh days,
20 Et de omni præda, sive vestimentum fuerit, sive vas, et aliquid in utensilia præparatum, de caprarum pellibus, et pilis, et ligno, expiabitur.	20 and purify al clothing, everything made of skin, everything woven of goat's hair and everythingmade of wood.'
21 Eleazar quoque sacerdos ad viros exercitus, qui pugnaverunt, sic locutus est : Hoc est præceptum legis, quod mandavit Dominus Moysi :	21 The priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had come back from the campaign, 'This is an article ofthe Law which Yahweh prescribed to Moses:
22 aurum, et argentum, et æs, et ferrum, et plumbum, et stannum,	22 although gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,
23 et omne, quod potest transire per flammas, igne purgabitur : quidquid autem ignem non potest sustinere, aqua expiationis sanctificabitur :	23 everything that can withstand fire can be cleaned by being passed through fire, it must stil bepurified with water for purification. Whatever cannot resist fire you must pass through water.
24 et lavabitis vestimenta vestra die septimo, et purificati postea castra intrabitis.	24 'Wash your clothes on the seventh day and you wil then be clean. You may then re-enter the camp.'
25 Dixit quoque Dominus ad Moysen :	25 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
26 Tollite summam eorum quæ capta sunt, ab homine usque ad pecus, tu et Eleazar sacerdos et principes vulgi :	26 'With the priest Eleazar and the heads of families in the community, take a count of the spoils andcaptives, human and animal.
27 dividesque ex æquo prædam inter eos qui pugnaverunt egressique sunt ad bellum, et inter omnem reliquam multitudinem.	27 You wil then share out the spoil, half and half, between those who fought the campaign and the restof the community.
28 Et separabis partem Domino ab his qui pugnaverunt et fuerunt in bello, unam animam de quingentis, tam ex hominibus quam ex bobus et asinis et ovibus,	28 From the share of the combatants who took part in the campaign, you wil set aside one out of everyfive hundred persons, oxen, donkeys and sheep as Yahweh's portion.
29 et dabis eam Eleazaro sacerdoti, quia primitiæ Domini sunt.	29 You wil take this from the half share coming to them and give it to the priest Eleazar as the portionset aside for Yahweh.
30 Ex media quoque parte filiorum Israël accipies quinquagesimum caput hominum, et boum, et asinorum, et ovium, cunctorum animantium, et dabis ea Levitis, qui excubant in custodiis tabernaculi Domini.	30 From the half coming to the Israelites, you will take one out of every fifty persons, oxen, donkeys,sheep, and al other animals, and give them to the Levites who are responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing.'
31 Feceruntque Moyses et Eleazar sicut præceperat Dominus.	31 Moses and the priest Eleazar did as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
32 Fuit autem præda, quam exercitus ceperat, ovium sexcenta septuaginta quinque millia,	32 The spoils, the remainder of the booty captured by the soldiers, came to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep and goats,
33 boum septuaginta duo millia,	33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle,
34 asinorum sexaginta millia et mille :	34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,
35 animæ hominum sexus feminei, quæ non cognoverant viros, triginta duo millia.	35 and in persons, women who had never slept with a man, thirty-two thousand in al .
36 Dataque est media pars his qui in prælio fuerant, ovium trecenta triginta septem millia quingentæ :	36 Half was assigned to those who had taken part in the war, namely three hundred and thirty-seventhousand five hundred sheep and goats,
37 e quibus in partem Domini supputatæ sunt oves sexcentæ septuaginta quinque :	37 of which Yahweh's portion was six hundred and seventy-five,
38 et de bobus triginta sex millibus, boves septuaginta et duo :	38 thirty-six thousand head of cattle, of which Yahweh's portion was seventy-two,
39 de asinis triginta millibus quingentis, asini sexaginta unus :	39 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, of which Yahweh's portion was sixty-one,
40 de animabus hominum sedecim millibus, cesserunt in partem Domini triginta duæ animæ.	40 and sixteen thousand persons, of which Yahweh's portion was thirty-two.
41 Tradiditque Moyses numerum primitiarum Domini Eleazaro sacerdoti, sicut fuerat ei imperatum,	41 Moses gave the priest Eleazar the portion set aside for Yahweh, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
42 ex media parte filiorum Israël, quam separaverat his qui in prælio fuerant.	42 As for the half coming to the Israelites which Moses had separated from that of the combatants,
43 De media vero parte, quæ contigerat reliquæ multitudini, id est, de ovibus trecentis triginta septem millibus quingentis,	43 this half, the community's share, came to three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundredsheep and goats,
44 et de bobus triginta sex millibus,	44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle,
45 et de asinis triginta millibus quingentis,	45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys
46 et de hominibus sedecim millibus,	46 and sixteen thousand persons.
47 tulit Moyses quinquagesimum caput, et dedit Levitis, qui excubabant in tabernaculo Domini, sicut præceperat Dominus.	47 From this half, the Israelites' share, Moses took one out of every fifty, human and animal, and gavethem to the Levites who were responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
48 Cumque accessissent principes exercitus ad Moysen, et tribuni, centurionesque, dixerunt :	48 The officers of the thousands who had fought the campaign, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, came to Moses
49 Nos servi tui recensuimus numerum pugnatorum, quos habuimus sub manu nostra : et ne unus quidem defuit.	49 and said, 'Your servants have numbered the soldiers under their command: none of our men ismissing.
50 Ob hanc causam offerimus in donariis Domini singuli quod in præda auri potuimus invenire, periscelides et armillas, annulos et dextralia, ac murænulas, ut depreceris pro nobis Dominum.	50 So, as an offering for Yahweh, we have brought what each of us has found in the way of goldornaments, armlets and bracelets, rings, earrings and breastplates, to make expiation for ourselves beforeYahweh.'
51 Susceperuntque Moyses et Eleazar sacerdos omne aurum in diversis speciebus,	51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, al this jewel ery.
52 pondo sedecim millia septingentos quinquaginta siclos, a tribunis et centurionibus.	52 This portion of gold given to Yahweh by the commanders of the thousands and commanders of thehundreds amounted to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
53 Unusquisque enim quod in præda rapuerat, suum erat.	53 Each of the soldiers took his own booty.
54 Et susceptum intulerunt in tabernaculum testimonii, in monimentum filiorum Israël coram Domino.	54 But Moses and the priest Eleazar, having accepted the gold from the commanders of the thousandsand commanders of the hundreds, brought it into the Tent of Meeting, to be a reminder of the Israelites beforeYahweh.
