LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Chi ama suo figlio usa spesso la sferza, perché ne gioisca quando è grande.	1 Whoever loves his son will beat him frequently so that in after years the son may be his comfort.
2 Chi disciplina suo figlio avrà poi gioia, ne sarà fiero in mezzo ai conoscenti.	2 Whoever is strict with his son wil reap the benefit, and be able to boast of him to his acquaintances.
3 Chi istruisce suo figlio fa ingelosire il nemico, di lui sarà lieto di fronte agli amici.	3 Whoever educates his son wil be the envy of his enemy, and wil be proud of him among his friends.
4 Suo padre è spirato, ma non è morto, ha lasciato dietro a sé uno che gli somiglia.	4 Even when the father dies, he might wel not be dead, since he leaves his likeness behind him.
5 In vita, lo ha visto e se n'è rallegrato, quando muore, non deve rammaricarsi.	5 In life he has had the joy of his company, dying, he has no anxieties.
6 Per i nemici, ha lasciato chi lo vendica, per gli amici, chi ricambia i favori.	6 He leaves an avenger against his enemies and a rewarder of favours for his friends.
7 Chi vezzeggia il figlio ne fascerà le ferite, ad ogni grido, le sue viscere tremeranno.	7 Whoever coddles his son will bandage his wounds, his heart wil turn over at every cry.
8 Un cavallo senza freno diventa ostinato, un figlio troppo libero diventa testardo.	8 A badly broken-in horse turns out stubborn, a son left to himself turns out headstrong.
9 Còccola tuo figlio e ti darà brutte sorprese, gioca con lui e ti farà soffrire.	9 Pamper your child and he wil terrorise you, play along with him and he wil bring you sorrow.
10 Con lui non ridere, per non dover piangere e battere i denti quando è grande.	10 Do not laugh with him, or one day you wil weep with him and end up gnashing your teeth.
11 Non dargli libertà quando è giovane, e non sorvolare sui suoi errori.	11 While he is young, do not al ow him his freedom and do not wink at his mistakes.
12 Fagli piegare il collo in gioventù, batti i suoi fianchi quando è ragazzo, perché non diventi caparbio e ti disobbedisca e non abbia da lui dispiaceri.	12 Bend his neck in youth, bruise his ribs while he is a child, or else he wil grow stubborn anddisobedient, and hurt you very deeply.
13 Disciplina tuo figlio e òccupati di lui, perché tu non inciampi per la sua depravazione.	13 Be strict with your son, and persevere with him, or you will rue his insolence.
14 Meglio il povero sano e forte nel corpo che il ricco tribolato nella salute.	14 Better be poor if healthy and fit than rich if tormented in body.
15 Sanità e vigore son meglio di tutto l'oro, una buona salute val più che smisurata ricchezza.	15 Health and strength are better than any gold, a robust body than untold wealth.
16 Non c'è miglior ricchezza che la salute del corpo, né migliore allegrezza che la gioia del cuore.	16 No riches can outweigh bodily health, no enjoyment surpass a cheerful heart.
17 E' meglio la morte che una vita amara, il riposo eterno che una malattia cronica.	17 Better death than a wretched life, and everlasting rest than chronic il ness.
18 Vivande versate sulla bocca chiusa son come cibi posti sopra il sepolcro.	18 Good things lavished on a closed mouth are like food offerings put on a grave.
19 Che giova all'idolo un'offerta di frutta? Non può mangiarla né odorarla, così è chi è perseguitato dal Signore.	19 What use is an offering to an idol which can neither eat nor smel ? How describe someone pursued bythe Lord's displeasure?
20 Egli guarda con gli occhi e geme, come geme l'eunuco che abbraccia una vergine.	20 He looks and sighs like a eunuch embracing a pretty girl -- how he sighs!
21 Non darti in balìa della tristezza e non affliggerti con la riflessione.	21 Do not abandon yourself to sorrow, do not torment yourself with brooding.
22 La gioia del cuore è vita per l'uomo, la contentezza gli moltiplica i giorni.	22 Gladness of heart is life to anyone, joy is what gives length of days.
23 Distrai te stesso e consola il tuo cuore, tieni lontano da te la tristezza, perché la tristezza ha rovinato molti, non c'è in essa utilità alcuna.	23 Give your cares the slip, console your heart, chase sorrow far away; for sorrow has been the ruin ofmany, and is no use to anybody.
24 L'invidia e la rabbia abbreviano i giorni, la preoccupazione porta a precoce vecchiaia.	24 Jealousy and anger shorten your days, and worry brings premature old age.
25 Un cuore sereno ha buon appetito, gusta quanto mangia.	25 A genial heart makes a good trencherman, someone who enjoys a good meal.
