1 Eliphaz di Theman allor prese a dire:	1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:
2 Può egli agguagliarsi a Dio un uomo, quand'anche avesse una scienza perfetta?	2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?
3 Torna egli forse in vantaggio di Dio se tu sarai giusto? E che aggiungi tu a lui se immacolata sarà la tua vita?	3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?
4 Forse per timor ch'egli abbia ti accuserà, e verrà teco in giudizio?	4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?
5 E non fa egli questo per le moltissime tue malvagità, e per le infinite tue colpe?	5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!
6 Perocché tu portasti via senza ragione il pegno de' tuoi fratelli, e spogliasti i meschini delle lor vesti.	6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,
7 Non desti acqua al sitibondo, e pane negasti all'affamato.	7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;
8 Colla forza del tuo braccio entrasti in possesso della terra, e potendone più degli altri in essa regnavi.	8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,
9 Le vedove rimandasti indietro senza far loro ragione, e i pupilli privasti d'ogni sostegno.	9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.
10 Per questo se' cinto di lacci, e turbato da repentini terrori.	10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;
11 E credevi che non avresti veduto mai tenebre, né saresti oppresso da tale impetuosa piena d'acque?	11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.
12 Pensi tu forse, che Dio è più sublime del cielo, e ch'ei sormonta l'altezza delle stelle?	12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?
13 Onde dici: Che può egli sapere Dio? Egli giudica quasi all'oscuro.	13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?
14 Suo nascondiglio sono le nuvole, né alle cose, nostre egli pon mente, e attorno ai cardini del cielo passeggia.	14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'
15 Vuoi tu forse camminare per quella antica strada, che fu battuta dagli empj?	15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,
16 I quali furon rapiti prima del loro tempo, e la fiumana roversciò i lor fondamenti:	16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,
17 I quali dicevano a Dio: Vattene da noi: e dell'Onnipotente tal avean concetto, come se nulla potesse:	17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'
18 Mentre egli le case loro avea riempiute di beni. Lungi da me l'opinion di coloro.	18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!
19 I giusti vedranno, e ne avranno allegrezza, e l'innocente gli schernirà.	19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:
20 Non è ella stata gettata a terra la loro altezza, e i loro avanzi non son eglino stati consunti dal fuoco?	20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'
21 Adattati adunque a lui, e avrei pace, e da ciò raccorrai ottimi frutti.	21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.
22 Dalla bocca di lui prendi legge, e nel cuor tuo imprimi le sue parole.	22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.
23 Se tornerai all'Onnipotente ti rimetterai in piedi, e rimoverai dalla tua casa l'iniquità.	23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,
24 In vece di terra egli ti darà vivo masso, e in cambio di pietre, torrenti di oro.	24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,
25 L'Onnipotente sarà teco contro de' tuoi nemici, e avrai l'argento a masse.	25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.
26 Allora nell'Onnipotente troverai copia di delizie, e alzerai a Dio la tua faccia.	26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.
27 Lo pregherai, ed egli ti esaudirà, e scioglierai i tuoi voti.	27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.
28 Risolverai una cosa, e sarà ridotta ad effetto, e le tue vie saran luminose.	28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;
29 Perocché chi fu umiliato sarà in gloria, e chi portò gli occhi bassi sarà salvato.	29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.
30 Sarà salvo l'innocente, e sarà salvo per la purezza delle sue mani.	30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.
