Livre de Job 31

JERUSALEM	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 J'avais fait un pacte avec mes yeux, au point de ne fixer aucune vierge.	1 I made a covenant with my eyes, that I would not so much as think upon a virgin.
2 Or, quel partage Dieu fait-il donc de là-haut, quel lot Shaddaï assigne-t-il de son ciel?	2 For what part should God from above have in me, and what inheritance the Almighty from on high?
3 N'est-ce pas le malheur qu'il réserve à l'injuste et l'adversité aux hommes malfaisants?	3 Is not destruction to the wicked, and aversion to them that work iniquity?
4 Ne voit-il pas ma conduite, ne compte-t-il point tous mes pas?	4 Doth not he consider my ways, and number all my steps?
5 Ai-je fait route avec le mensonge, pressé le pas vers la fausseté?	5 If I have walked in vanity, and my foot hath made haste to deceit:
6 Qu'il me pèse sur une balance exacte: lui, Dieu, reconnaîtra mon intégrité!	6 Let him weigh me in a just balance, and let God know my simplicity.
7 Si mes pas ont dévié du droit chemin, si mon coeur fut entraîné par mes yeux et si une souillure adhèreà mes mains,	7 If my step hath turned out of the way, and if my heart hath followed my eyes, and if a spot hath cleaved to my hands:
8 qu'un autre mange ce que j'ai semé et que soient arrachées mes jeunes pousses!	8 Then let me sow and let another eat: and let my offspring be rooted out.
9 Si mon coeur fut séduit par une femme, si j'ai épié à la porte de mon prochain,	9 If my heart hath been deceived upon a woman, and if I have laid wait at my friend's door:
10 que ma femme se mette à moudre pour autrui, que d'autres aient commerce avec elle!	10 Let my wife be the harlot of another, and let other men lie with her.
11 J'aurais commis là une impudicité, un crime passible de justice,	11 For this is a heinous crime, and a most grievous iniquity.
12 ce serait un feu qui dévore jusqu'à la Perdition et consumerait tout mon revenu.	12 It is a fire that devoureth even to destruction, and rooteth up all things that spring.
13 Si j'ai méconnu les droits de mon serviteur, de ma servante, dans leurs litiges avec moi,	13 If I have despised to abide judgment with my manservant, or my maidservant, when they had any controversy against me:
14 que ferai-je quand Dieu surgira? Lorsqu'il fera l'enquête, que répondrai-je?	14 For what shall I do when God shall rise to judge? and when he shall examine, what shall I answer him?
15 Ne les a-t-il pas créés comme moi dans le ventre? Un même Dieu nous forma dans le sein.	15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him also: and did not one and the same form me in the womb?
16 Ai-je été insensible aux besoins des faibles, laissé languir les yeux de la veuve?	16 If I have denied to the poor what they desired, and have made the eyes of the widow wait:
17 Ai-je mangé seul mon morceau de pain, sans le partager avec l'orphelin?	17 If I have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof:
18 Alors que Dieu, dès mon enfance, m'a élevé comme un père, guidé depuis le sein maternel!	18 (For from my infancy mercy grew up with me: and it came out with me from my mother's womb :)
19 Ai-je vu un miséreux sans vêtements, un pauvre sans couverture,	19 If I have despised him that was perishing for want of clothing, and the poor man that had no covering:
20 sans que leurs reins m'aient béni, que la toison de mes agneaux les ait réchauffés?	20 If his sides have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep:
21 Ai-je agité la main contre un orphelin, me sachant soutenu à la Porte?	21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw myself superior in the gate:
22 Qu'alors mon épaule se détache de ma nuque et que mon bras se rompe au coude!	22 Let my shoulder fall from its joint, and let my arm with its bones be broken.
23 Car la terreur de Dieu fondrait sur moi, je ne tiendrais pas devant sa majesté.	23 For I have always feared God as waves swelling over me, and his weight I was not able to bear.
24 Ai-je placé dans l'or ma confiance et dit à l'or fin: "O ma sécurité?"	24 If I have thought gold my strength, and have said to fine gold: My confidence:
25 Me suis-je réjoui de mes biens nombreux, des richesses acquises par mes mains?	25 If I have rejoiced over my great riches, and because my hand had gotten much.
26 A la vue du soleil dans son éclat, de la lune radieuse dans sa course,	26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, and the moon going in brightness:
27 mon coeur, en secret, s'est-il laissé séduire, pour leur envoyer de la main un baiser?	27 And my heart in secret hath rejoiced, and I have kissed my hand with my mouth:
28 Ce serait encore une faute criminelle, car j'aurais renié le Dieu suprême.	28 Which is a very great iniquity, and a denial against the most high God.
29 Me suis-je réjoui de l'infortune de mon ennemi, ai-je exulté quand le malheur l'atteignait,	29 If I have been glad at the downfall of him that hated me, and have rejoiced that evil had found him.
30 moi, qui ne permettais pas à ma langue de pécher, de réclamer sa vie dans une malédiction?	30 For I have not given my mouth to sin, by wishing a curse to his soul.
31 Et ne disaient-ils pas, les gens de ma tente: "Trouve-t-on quelqu'un qu'il n'ait pas rassasié de viande?"	31 If the men of my tabernacle have not said: Who will give us of his flesh that we may be filled?
32 Jamais étranger ne coucha dehors, au voyageur ma porte restait ouverte.	32 The stranger did not stay without, my door was open to the traveller.
33 Ai-je dissimulé aux hommes mes transgressions, caché ma faute dans mon sein?	33 If as a man I have hid my sin, and have concealed my iniquity in my bosom.
34 Ai-je eu peur de la rumeur publique, ai-je redouté le mépris des familles, et me suis-je tenu coi,n'osant franchir ma porte?	34 If I have been afraid at a very great multitude, and the contempt of kinsmen hath terrified me: and I have not rather held my peace, and not gone out of the door.
35 Ah! qui fera donc que l'on m'écoute? J'ai dit mon dernier mot: à Shaddaï de me répondre! Le libellequ'aura rédigé mon adversaire,	35 Who would grant me a hearer, that the Almighty may hear my desire; and that he himself that judgeth would write a book,
36 je veux le porter sur mon épaule, le ceindre comme un diadème.	36 That I may carry it on my shoulder, and put it about me as a crown?
37 Je lui rendrai compte de tous mes pas et je m'avancerai vers lui comme un prince.	37 At every step of mine I would pronounce it, and offer it as to a prince.
38 Si ma terre crie vengeance contre moi et que ses sillons pleurent avec elle,	38 If my land cry against me, and with it the furrows thereof mourn:
39 si j'ai mangé de ses produits sans payer, fait expirer ses propriétaires,	39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, and have afflicted the soul of the tillers thereof:
40 qu'au lieu de froment y poussent les ronces, à la place de l'orge, l'herbe fétide. Fin des paroles de Job.	40 Let thistles grow up to me instead of wheat, and thorns instead of barley.
