| 1 Gesù, sei giorni prima della Pasqua, andò a Betània, dov'era Lazzaro, che egli aveva risuscitato dai morti. | 1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. |

La casa fu ripiena della fragranza di quel profumo. | 3 Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. |
| 4 Dice Giuda Iscariota, uno dei suoi discepoli, che stava per tradirlo: | 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said, |
| 5 "Perché non si è venduto il profumo per trecento danari e non si è dato il ricavato ai poveri?". | 5 "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" |
| 6 Lo disse, però, non perché gli stavano a cuore i poveri, ma perché era ladro e, avendo la borsa, sottraeva ciò che vi veniva messo dentro. | 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. |
| 7 Disse allora Gesù: "Lasciala, ché lo doveva conservare per il giorno della mia sepoltura. | 7 Jesus said, "Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. |
| 8 I poveri infatti li avete sempre con voi, me invece non avete sempre". | 8 The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me." |
| 9 Una folla numerosa di Giudei venne a sapere che si trovava lì e vennero non solo per Gesù, ma anche per vedere Lazzaro che aveva risuscitato dai morti. | 9 When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. |
| 10 I sacerdoti-capi decisero allora di uccidere anche Lazzaro, | 10 So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus also to death, |
| 11 perché a causa sua molti Giudei andavano e credevano in Gesù. | 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. |
| 12 Il giorno dopo la grande folla giunta per la festa, sentito che Gesù veniva a Gerusalemme, | 12 The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. |
| 13 prese rami di palma e gli andò incontro gridando: Osanna! Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore, il re d'Israele! | 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" |
| 14 Gesù, trovato un asinello, gli sedette in groppa come sta scritto: | 14 And Jesus found a young ass and sat upon it; as it is written, |
| 15 Non temere, figlia di Sion! Ecco, il tuo re viene, seduto sopra un puledro d'asina. | 15 "Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on an ass's colt!" |
| 16 In un primo tempo i suoi discepoli non compresero questo fatto, ma quando Gesù fu glorificato, allora si ricordarono che questo era stato scritto di lui e che era proprio quello che gli avevano fatto. | 16 His disciples did not understand this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that this had been written of him and had been done to him. |
| 17 La gente, che era stata con lui quando aveva chiamato Lazzaro dal sepolcro e lo aveva risuscitato dai morti, gli rendeva testimonianza. | 17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. |
| 18 Per questo gli andò incontro la folla, perché avevano sentito che aveva fatto questo segno. | 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. |
| 19 I farisei allora si dissero fra loro: "Vedete che non combinate nulla: ecco che il mondo gli è andato dietro!". | 19 The Pharisees then said to one another, "You see that you can do nothing; look, the world has gone after him." |
| 20 Tra quelli che erano saliti per adorare durante la festa c'erano alcuni Greci. | 20 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. |
| 21 Essi abbordarono Filippo, quello di Betsàida di Galilea, e gli chiesero: "Signore, vorremmo vedere Gesù". | 21 So these came to Philip, who was from Beth-saida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." |
| 22 Filippo va a dirlo ad Andrea. Andrea e Filippo vanno a dirlo a Gesù. | 22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew went with Philip and they told Jesus. |
| 23 Gesù risponde loro: "E' venuta l'ora che il Figlio dell'uomo sia glorificato. | 23 And Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified. |
| 24 In verità, in verità vi dico: se il grano di frumento, caduto per terra, non muore, resta esso solo. Ma se muore, porta molto frutto. | 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. |
| 25 Chi ama la propria vita, la perde, e chi odia la propria vita in questo mondo, la conserverà per la vita eterna. | 25 He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. |
| 26 Se qualcuno mi serve, mi segua e là dove sono io sarà anche il mio servo. Se uno mi serve, il Padre lo onorerà. | 26 If any one serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honor him. |
| 27 Ora la mia anima è turbata, e che devo dire?... Padre, sàlvami da quest'ora? Ma proprio per questo sono venuto a quest'ora. | 27 "Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour? No, for this purpose I have come to this hour. |
| 28 Padre, glorifica il tuo nome!". Venne allora una voce dal cielo: "L'ho glorificato e lo glorificherò ancora". | 28 Father, glorify thy name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." |
| 29 La gente che stava lì e aveva sentito, diceva che era stato un tuono. Altri dicevano: "Un angelo gli ha parlato". | 29 The crowd standing by heard it and said that it had thundered. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." |
| 30 Rispose Gesù: "Non è per me che s'è fatta sentire questa voce, ma per voi. | 30 Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. |
| 31 Ora c'è il giudizio di questo mondo, ora il principe di questo mondo sarà cacciato fuori. | 31 Now is the judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast out; |
| 32 E quando io sarò innalzato da terra, attrarrò tutti a me". | 32 and I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself." |
| 33 Questo lo diceva per indicare di quale morte stava per morire. | 33 He said this to show by what death he was to die. |
| 34 Gli rispose la gente: "Noi abbiamo sentito dalla legge che il Cristo rimane per sempre: e come dici tu che il Figlio dell'uomo deve essere innalzato? Chi è questo Figlio dell'uomo?". | 34 The crowd answered him, "We have heard from the law that the Christ remains for ever. How can you say that the Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?" |
| 35 Disse loro Gesù: "Solo ancora un po' di tempo la luce è in mezzo a voi. Camminate finché avete la luce, affinché non vi sorprendano le tenebre. Chi cammina nelle tenebre non sa dove va. | 35 Jesus said to them, "The light is with you for a little longer. Walk while you have the light, lest the darkness overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. |
| 36 Finché avete la luce, credete alla luce, affinché diventiate figli della luce". Questo disse Gesù e, andatosene, si nascose da loro. | 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light." When Jesus had said this, he departed and hid himself from them. |
| 37 Per quanto Gesù avesse compiuto così grandi segni davanti a loro, non credevano in lui, | 37 Though he had done so many signs before them, yet they did not believe in him; |
| 38 perché si adempisse la parola che aveva detto il profeta Isaia: Signore, chi credette alla nostra parola? Il braccio del Signore a chi fu rivelato? | 38 it was that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "Lord, who has believed our report, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" |
| 39 Per questo non potevano credere, perché Isaia disse anche: | 39 Therefore they could not believe. For Isaiah again said, |
| 40 Ha accecato i loro occhi e incallito il loro cuore, affinché con gli occhi non vedano e col cuore non comprendano e così non si convertano e io non li guarisca. | 40 "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they should see with their eyes and perceive with their heart, and turn for me to heal them." |
| 41 Questo Isaia lo disse, perché vide la sua gloria e parlò di lui. | 41 Isaiah said this because he saw his glory and spoke of him. |
| 42 Pur tuttavia anche fra i capi molti credettero in lui, ma non lo professavano pubblicamente a causa dei farisei, per non venire espulsi dalla sinagoga. | 42 Nevertheless many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: |
| 43 Preferirono infatti la gloria degli uomini alla gloria di Dio. | 43 for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. |
| 44 Gesù proclamò ad alta voce: "Chi crede in me, non crede in me, ma in Colui che mi ha mandato, | 44 And Jesus cried out and said, "He who believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. |
| 45 e colui che vede me, vede Colui che mi ha mandato. | 45 And he who sees me sees him who sent me. |
| 46 Io, luce, sono venuto nel mondo affinché chi crede in me non rimanga nelle tenebre. | 46 I have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. |
| 47 Se uno ascolta le mie parole e non le osserva, io non lo condanno. Non sono venuto infatti per condannare il mondo, ma per salvare il mondo. | 47 If any one hears my sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. |
| 48 Colui che mi rifiuta e non accoglie le mie parole, ha chi lo giudica. La parola che ho pronunciato, quella lo giudicherà nell'ultimo giorno; | 48 He who rejects me and does not receive my sayings has a judge; the word that I have spoken will be his judge on the last day. |
| 49 perché io non ho parlato da me stesso, ma il Padre stesso che mi ha mandato mi ha comandato ciò che dovevo dire e pronunciare. | 49 For I have not spoken on my own authority; the Father who sent me has himself given me commandment what to say and what to speak. |
| 50 E so che il suo comandamento è vita eterna. Ciò che dico, lo dico come il Padre me l'ha detto". | 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has bidden me." |
