1 Agrippa disse a Paolo: "Ti è concesso di parlare a tua difesa". Allora Paolo, stesa la mano, si difese così:	1 Yet truly, Agrippa said to Paul, “It is permitted for you to speak for yourself.” Then Paul, extending his hand, began to offer his defense.
2 "Mi considero fortunato, o re Agrippa, di potermi discolpare da tutte le accuse di cui sono incriminato dai Giudei, oggi qui davanti a te,	2 “I consider myself blessed, O king Agrippa, that I am to give my defense today before you, about everything of which I am accused by the Jews,
3 che conosci a perfezione tutte le usanze e questioni riguardanti i Giudei. Perciò ti prego di ascoltarmi con pazienza.	3 especially since you know everything that pertains to the Jews, both customs and questions. Because of this, I beg you to listen to me patiently.
4 La mia vita fin dalla mia giovinezza, vissuta tra il mio popolo e a Gerusalemme, la conoscono tutti i Giudei;	4 And certainly, all the Jews know about my life from my youth, which had its beginning among my own people in Jerusalem.
5 essi sanno pure da tempo, se vogliono renderne testimonianza, che, come fariseo, sono vissuto nella setta più rigida della nostra religione.	5 They knew me well from the beginning, (if they would be willing to offer testimony) for I lived according to the most determined sect of our religion: as a Pharisee.
6 Ed ora mi trovo sotto processo a causa della speranza nella promessa fatta da Dio ai nostri padri,	6 And now, it is in the hope of the Promise which was made by God to our fathers that I stand subject to judgment.
7 e che le nostre dodici tribù sperano di vedere compiuta, servendo Dio notte e giorno con perseveranza. Di questa speranza, o re, sono ora incolpato dai Giudei!	7 It is the Promise that our twelve tribes, worshiping night and day, hope to see. About this hope, O king, I am accused by the Jews.
8 Perché è considerato inconcepibile fra di voi che Dio risusciti i morti?	8 Why should it be judged so unbelievable with you all that God might raise the dead?
9 Anch'io credevo un tempo mio dovere di lavorare attivamente contro il nome di Gesù il Nazareno,	9 And certainly, I myself formerly considered that I ought to act in many ways which are contrary to the name of Jesus the Nazarene.
10 come in realtà feci a Gerusalemme; molti dei fedeli li rinchiusi in prigione con l'autorizzazione avuta dai sommi sacerdoti e, quando venivano condannati a morte, anch'io ho votato contro di loro.	10 This is also how I acted at Jerusalem. And so, I enclosed many holy persons in prison, having received authority from the leaders of the priests. And when they were to be killed, I brought the sentence.
11 In tutte le sinagoghe cercavo di costringerli con le torture a bestemmiare e, infuriando all'eccesso contro di loro, davo loro la caccia fin nelle città straniere.	11 And in every synagogue, frequently while punishing them, I compelled them to blaspheme. And being all the more maddened against them, I persecuted them, even to foreign cities.
12 In tali circostanze, mentre stavo andando a Damasco con autorizzazione e pieni poteri da parte dei sommi sacerdoti, verso mezzogiorno	12 Thereafter, as I was going to Damascus, with authority and permission from the high priest,
13 vidi sulla strada, o re, una luce dal cielo, più splendente del sole, che avvolse me e i miei compagni di viaggio.	13 at midday, O king, I and those who were also with me, saw along the way a light from heaven shining around me with a splendor greater than that of the sun.
14 Tutti cademmo a terra e io udii dal cielo una voce che mi diceva in ebraico: Saulo, Saulo, perché mi perseguiti? Duro è per te ricalcitrare contro il pungolo.	14 And when we had all fallen down to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me in the Hebrew language: ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is hard for you to kick against the goad.’
15 E io dissi: Chi sei, o Signore? E il Signore rispose: Io sono Gesù, che tu perseguiti.	15 Then I said, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And the Lord said, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.
16 Su, alzati e rimettiti in piedi; ti sono apparso infatti per costituirti ministro e testimone di quelle cose che hai visto e di quelle per cui ti apparirò ancora.	16 But rise up and stand on your feet. For I appeared to you for this reason: so that I may establish you as a minister and a witness concerning the things that you have seen, and concerning the things that I will show to you:
17 Per questo ti 'libererò' dal popolo e 'dai pagani, ai quali ti mando'	17 rescuing you from the people and the nations to which I am now sending you,
18 'ad aprir' loro 'gli occhi', perché passino 'dalle tenebre alla luce' e dal potere di satana a Dio e ottengano la remissione dei peccati e l'eredità in mezzo a coloro che sono stati santificati per la fede in me.	18 in order to open their eyes, so that they may be converted from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive the remission of sins and a place among the saints, through the faith that is in me.’
19 Pertanto, o re Agrippa, io non ho disobbedito alla visione celeste;	19 From then on, O king Agrippa, I was not unbelieving to the heavenly vision.
20 ma prima a quelli di Damasco, poi a quelli di Gerusalemme e in tutta la regione della Giudea e infine ai pagani, predicavo di convertirsi e di rivolgersi a Dio, comportandosi in maniera degna della conversione.	20 But I preached, first to those who are at Damascus and at Jerusalem, and then to the entire region of Judea, and to the Gentiles, so that they would repent and convert to God, doing the works that are worthy of repentance.
21 Per queste cose i Giudei mi assalirono nel tempio e tentarono di uccidermi.	21 It was for this reason that the Jews, having apprehended me when I was in the temple, attempted to kill me.
22 Ma l'aiuto di Dio mi ha assistito fino a questo giorno, e posso ancora rendere testimonianza agli umili e ai grandi. Null'altro io affermo se non quello che i profeti e Mosè dichiararono che doveva accadere,	22 But having been aided by the help of God, even to this day, I stand witnessing to the small and the great, saying nothing beyond what the Prophets and Moses have said would be in the future:
23 che cioè il Cristo sarebbe morto, e che, primo tra i risorti da morte, avrebbe annunziato la luce al popolo e ai pagani".	23 that the Christ would suffer, and that he would be the first from the resurrection of the dead, and that he would bring light to the people and to the nations.”
24 Mentr'egli parlava così in sua difesa, Festo a gran voce disse: "Sei pazzo, Paolo; la troppa scienza ti ha dato al cervello!".	24 While he was speaking these things and presenting his defense, Festus said with a loud voice: “Paul, you are insane! Too much studying has turned you to insanity.”
25 E Paolo: "Non sono pazzo, disse, eccellentissimo Festo, ma sto dicendo parole vere e sagge.	25 And Paul said: “I am not insane, most excellent Festus, but rather I am speaking words of truth and sobriety.
26 Il re è al corrente di queste cose e davanti a lui parlo con franchezza. Penso che niente di questo gli sia sconosciuto, poiché non sono fatti accaduti in segreto.	26 For the king knows about these things. To him also, I am speaking with constancy. For I think that none of these things are unknown to him. And neither were these things done in a corner.
27 Credi, o re Agrippa, nei profeti? So che ci credi".	27 Do you believe the Prophets, O king Agrippa? I know that you believe.”
28 E Agrippa a Paolo: "Per poco non mi convinci a farmi cristiano!".	28 Then Agrippa said to Paul, “To some extent, you persuade me to become a Christian.”
29 E Paolo: "Per poco o per molto, io vorrei supplicare Dio che non soltanto tu, ma quanti oggi mi ascoltano diventassero così come sono io, eccetto queste catene!".	29 And Paul said, “I hope to God that, both to a small extent and to a great extent, not only you, but also all those who hear me this day will become just as I also am, except for these chains.”
30 Si alzò allora il re e con lui il governatore, Berenìce, e quelli che avevano preso parte alla seduta	30 And the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and those who were sitting with them.
31 e avviandosi conversavano insieme e dicevano: "Quest'uomo non ha fatto nulla che meriti la morte o le catene".	31 And when they had withdrawn, they were speaking among themselves, saying, “This man has done nothing worthy of death, nor of imprisonment.”
32 E Agrippa disse a Festo: "Costui poteva essere rimesso in libertà, se non si fosse appellato a Cesare".	32 Then Agrippa said to Festus, “This man could have been released, if he had not appealed to Caesar.”
