Deuteronomio 17

1 Non immolerai al Signore tuo Dio bue o pecora che abbia qualche difetto o qualche deformità, perché sarebbe abominio per il Signore tuo Dio.	1 "You shall not sacrifice to the LORD, your God, from the herd or from the flock an animal with any serious defect; that would be an abomination to the LORD, your God.
2 Qualora si trovi in mezzo a te, in una delle città che il Signore tuo Dio sta per darti, un uomo o una donna che faccia ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore tuo Dio, trasgredendo la sua alleanza,	2 "If there is found among you, in any one of the communities which the LORD, your God, gives you, a man or a woman who does evil in the sight of the LORD, your God, and transgresses his covenant,
3 e che vada e serva altri dèi e si prostri davanti a loro, davanti al sole o alla luna o a tutto l'esercito del cielo, contro il mio comando,	3 by serving other gods, or by worshiping the sun or the moon or any of the host of the sky, against my command;
4 quando ciò ti sia riferito o tu ne abbia sentito parlare, informatene diligentemente; se la cosa è vera, se il fatto sussiste, se un tale abominio è stato commesso in Israele,	4 and if, on being informed of it, you find by careful investigation that it is true and an established fact that this abomination has been committed in Israel:
5 farai condurre alle porte della tua città quell'uomo o quella donna che avrà commesso quell'azione cattiva e lapiderai quell'uomo o quella donna, così che muoia.	5 you shall bring the man (or woman) who has done the evil deed out to your city gates and stone him to death.
6 Colui che dovrà morire sarà messo a morte sulla deposizione di due o di tre testimoni; non potrà essere messo a morte sulla deposizione di un solo testimonio.	6 The testimony of two or three witnesses is required for putting a person to death; no one shall be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.
7 La mano dei testimoni sarà la prima contro di lui per farlo morire; poi la mano di tutto il popolo; così estirperai il male in mezzo a te.	7 At the execution, the witnesses are to be the first to raise their hands against him; afterward all the people are to join in. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst.
8 Quando in una causa ti sarà troppo difficile decidere tra assassinio e assassinio, tra diritto e diritto, tra percossa e percossa, in cose su cui si litiga nelle tue città, ti alzerai e salirai al luogo che il Signore tuo Dio avrà scelto;	8 "If in your own community there is a case at issue which proves too complicated for you to decide, in a matter of bloodshed or of civil rights or of personal injury, you shall then go up to the place which the LORD, your God, chooses,
9 andrai dai sacerdoti e dal giudice in carica a quel tempo; li consulterai ed essi ti indicheranno la sentenza da pronunciare;	9 to the levitical priests or to the judge who is in office at that time. They shall study the case and then hand down to you their decision.
10 tu agirai in base a quello che essi ti indicheranno nel luogo che il Signore avrà scelto e avrai cura di fare quanto ti avranno insegnato.	10 According to this decision that they give you in the place which the LORD chooses, you shall act, being careful to do exactly as they direct.
11 Agirai in base alla legge che essi ti avranno insegnato e alla sentenza che ti avranno indicato; non devierai da quello che ti avranno esposto, né a destra, né a sinistra.	11 You shall carry out the directions they give you and the verdict they pronounce for you, without turning aside to the right or to the left from the decision they hand down to you.
12 L'uomo che si comporterà con presunzione e non obbedirà al sacerdote che sta là per servire il Signore tuo Dio o al giudice, quell'uomo dovrà morire; così toglierai il male da Israele;	12 Any man who has the insolence to refuse to listen to the priest who officiates there in the ministry of the LORD, your God, or to the judge, shall die. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst.
13 tutto il popolo lo verrà a sapere, ne avrà timore e non agirà più con presunzione.	13 And all the people, on hearing of it, shall fear, and never again be so insolent.
14 Quando sarai entrato nel paese che il Signore tuo Dio sta per darti e ne avrai preso possesso e l'abiterai, se dirai: Voglio costituire sopra di me un re come tutte le nazioni che mi stanno intorno,	14 "When you have come into the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you, and have occupied it and settled in it, should you then decide to have a king over you like all the surrounding nations,
15 dovrai costituire sopra di te come re colui che il Signore tuo Dio avrà scelto. Costituirai sopra di te come re uno dei tuoi fratelli; non potrai costituire su di te uno straniero che non sia tuo fratello.	15 you shall set that man over you as your king whom the LORD, your God, chooses. He whom you set over you as king must be your kinsman; a foreigner, who is no kin of yours, you may not set over you.
16 Ma egli non dovrà procurarsi un gran numero di cavalli né far tornare il popolo in Egitto per procurarsi gran numero di cavalli, perché il Signore vi ha detto: Non tornerete più indietro per quella via!	16 But he shall not have a great number of horses; nor shall he make his people go back again to Egypt to acquire them, against the LORD'S warning that you must never go back that way again.
17 Non dovrà avere un gran numero di mogli, perché il suo cuore non si smarrisca; neppure abbia grande quantità di argento e d'oro.	17 Neither shall he have a great number of wives, lest his heart be estranged, nor shall he accumulate a vast amount of silver and gold.
18 Quando si insedierà sul trono regale, scriverà per suo uso in un libro una copia di questa legge secondo l'esemplare dei sacerdoti leviti.	18 When he is enthroned in his kingdom, he shall have a copy of this law made from the scroll that is in the custody of the levitical priests.
19 La terrà presso di sé e la leggerà tutti i giorni della sua vita, per imparare a temere il Signore suo Dio, a osservare tutte le parole di questa legge e tutti questi statuti,	19 He shall keep it with him and read it all the days of his life that he may learn to fear the LORD, his God, and to heed and fulfill all the words of this law and these statutes.
20 perché il suo cuore non si insuperbisca verso i suoi fratelli ed egli non si allontani da questi comandi, né a destra, né a sinistra, e prolunghi così i giorni del suo regno, lui e i suoi figli, in mezzo a Israele.	20 Let him not become estranged from his countrymen through pride, nor turn aside to the right or to the left from these commandments. Then he and his descendants will enjoy a long reign in Israel.
