1 Mancavano intanto due giorni alla Pasqua e agli Azzimi e i sommi sacerdoti e gli scribi cercavano il modo di impadronirsi di lui con inganno, per ucciderlo.	1 It was two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and thescribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.
2 Dicevano infatti: "Non durante la festa, perché non succeda un tumulto di popolo".	2 For they said, 'It must not be during the festivities, or there wil be a disturbance among the people.'
3 Gesù si trovava a Betània nella casa di Simone il lebbroso. Mentre stava a mensa, giunse una donna con un vasetto di alabastro, pieno di olio profumato di nardo genuino di gran valore; ruppe il vasetto di alabastro e versò l'unguento sul suo capo.	3 He was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease; hewas at table when a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, pure nard. She broke the jarand poured the ointment on his head.
4 Ci furono alcuni che si sdegnarono fra di loro: "Perché tutto questo spreco di olio profumato?	4 Some who were there said to one another indignantly, 'Why this waste of ointment?
5 Si poteva benissimo vendere quest'olio a più di trecento denari e darli ai poveri!". Ed erano infuriati contro di lei.	5 Ointment like this could have been sold for over three hundred denari and the money given to thepoor'; and they were angry with her.
6 Allora Gesù disse: "Lasciatela stare; perché le date fastidio? Ella ha compiuto verso di me un'opera buona;	6 But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone. Why are you upsetting her? What she has done for me is a goodwork.
7 i poveri infatti li avete sempre con voi e potete beneficarli quando volete, me invece non mi avete sempre.	7 You have the poor with you always, and you can be kind to them whenever you wish, but you wil notalways have me.
8 Essa ha fatto ciò ch'era in suo potere, ungendo in anticipo il mio corpo per la sepoltura.	8 She has done what she could: she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial.
9 In verità vi dico che dovunque, in tutto il mondo, sarà annunziato il vangelo, si racconterà pure in suo ricordo ciò che ella ha fatto".	9 In truth I tel you, wherever throughout al the world the gospel is proclaimed, what she has done wilbe told as well, in remembrance of her.'
10 Allora Giuda Iscariota, uno dei Dodici, si recò dai sommi sacerdoti, per consegnare loro Gesù.	10 Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, approached the chief priests with an offer to hand Jesus over tothem.
11 Quelli all'udirlo si rallegrarono e promisero di dargli denaro. Ed egli cercava l'occasione opportuna per consegnarlo.	11 They were delighted to hear it, and promised to give him money; and he began to look for a way ofbetraying him when the opportunity should occur.
12 Il primo giorno degli Azzimi, quando si immolava la Pasqua, i suoi discepoli gli dissero: "Dove vuoi che andiamo a preparare perché tu possa mangiare la Pasqua?".	12 On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said tohim, 'Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'
13 Allora mandò due dei suoi discepoli dicendo loro: "Andate in città e vi verrà incontro un uomo con una brocca d'acqua; seguitelo	13 So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 'Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying apitcher of water. Fol ow him,
14 e là dove entrerà dite al padrone di casa: Il Maestro dice: Dov'è la mia stanza, perché io vi possa mangiare la Pasqua con i miei discepoli?	14 and say to the owner of the house which he enters, "The Master says: Where is the room for me toeat the Passover with my disciples?"
15 Egli vi mostrerà al piano superiore una grande sala con i tappeti, già pronta; là preparate per noi".	15 He wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches, al prepared. Make the preparations forus there.'
16 I discepoli andarono e, entrati in città, trovarono come aveva detto loro e prepararono per la Pasqua.	16 The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and preparedthe Passover.
17 Venuta la sera, egli giunse con i Dodici.	17 When evening came he arrived with the Twelve.
18 Ora, mentre erano a mensa e mangiavano, Gesù disse: "In verità vi dico, uno di voi, 'colui che mangia con me', mi tradirà".	18 And while they were at table eating, Jesus said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me,one of you eating with me.'
19 Allora cominciarono a rattristarsi e a dirgli uno dopo l'altro: "Sono forse io?".	19 They were distressed and said to him, one after another, 'Not me, surely?'
20 Ed egli disse loro: "Uno dei Dodici, colui che intinge con me nel piatto.	20 He said to them, 'It is one of the Twelve, one who is dipping into the same dish with me.
21 Il Figlio dell'uomo se ne va, come sta scritto di lui, ma guai a quell'uomo dal quale il Figlio dell'uomo è tradito! Bene per quell'uomo se non fosse mai nato!".	21 Yes, the Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whomthe Son of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born.'
22 Mentre mangiavano prese il pane e, pronunziata la benedizione, lo spezzò e lo diede loro, dicendo: "Prendete, questo è il mio corpo".	22 And as they were eating he took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it tothem. 'Take it,' he said, 'this is my body.'
23 Poi prese il calice e rese grazie, lo diede loro e ne bevvero tutti.	23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them, and al drank from it,
24 E disse: "Questo è il mio sangue, il sangue dell'alleanza versato per molti.	24 and he said to them, 'This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many.
25 In verità vi dico che io non berrò più del frutto della vite fino al giorno in cui lo berrò nuovo nel regno di Dio".	25 In truth I tel you, I shal never drink wine any more until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdomof God.'
26 E dopo aver cantato l'inno, uscirono verso il monte degli Ulivi.	26 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.
27 Gesù disse loro: "Tutti rimarrete scandalizzati, poiché sta scritto: 'Percuoterò il pastore e le pecore saranno disperse'.	27 And Jesus said to them, 'You wil all fal away, for the scripture says: I shal strike the shepherd andthe sheep wil be scattered;
28 Ma, dopo la mia risurrezione, vi precederò in Galilea".	28 however, after my resurrection I shall go before you into Galilee.'
29 Allora Pietro gli disse: "Anche se tutti saranno scandalizzati, io non lo sarò".	29 Peter said, 'Even if all fal away, I wil not.'
30 Gesù gli disse: "In verità ti dico: proprio tu oggi, in questa stessa notte, prima che il gallo canti due volte, mi rinnegherai tre volte".	30 And Jesus said to him, 'In truth I tel you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, youwil have disowned me three times.'
31 Ma egli, con grande insistenza, diceva: "Se anche dovessi morire con te, non ti rinnegherò". Lo stesso dicevano anche tutti gli altri.	31 But he repeated stil more earnestly, 'If I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And they allsaid the same.
32 Giunsero intanto a un podere chiamato Getsèmani, ed egli disse ai suoi discepoli: "Sedetevi qui, mentre io prego".	32 They came to a plot of land cal ed Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, 'Stay here while I pray.'
33 Prese con sé Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni e cominciò a sentire paura e angoscia.	33 Then he took Peter and James and John with him.
34 Gesù disse loro: "La mia anima è triste fino alla morte. Restate qui e vegliate".	34 And he began to feel terror and anguish. And he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point ofdeath. Wait here, and stay awake.'
35 Poi, andato un po' innanzi, si gettò a terra e pregava che, se fosse possibile, passasse da lui quell'ora.	35 And going on a little further he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, thishour might pass him by.
36 E diceva: "Abbà, Padre! Tutto è possibile a te, allontana da me questo calice! Però non ciò che io voglio, ma ciò che vuoi tu".	36 'Abba, Father!' he said, 'For you everything is possible. Take this cup away from me. But let it be asyou, not I, would have it.'
37 Tornato indietro, li trovò addormentati e disse a Pietro: "Simone, dormi? Non sei riuscito a vegliare un'ora sola?	37 He came back and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'Simon, are you asleep? Had you notthe strength to stay awake one hour?
38 Vegliate e pregate per non entrare in tentazione; lo spirito è pronto, ma la carne è debole".	38 Stay awake and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is wil ing enough, but human nature is weak.'
39 Allontanatosi di nuovo, pregava dicendo le medesime parole.	39 Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.
40 Ritornato li trovò addormentati, perché i loro occhi si erano appesantiti, e non sapevano che cosa rispondergli.	40 And once more he came back and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy; and they couldfind no answer for him.
41 Venne la terza volta e disse loro: "Dormite ormai e riposatevi! Basta, è venuta l'ora: ecco, il Figlio dell'uomo viene consegnato nelle mani dei peccatori.	41 He came back a third time and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest. It is al over.The hour has come. Now the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.
42 Alzatevi, andiamo! Ecco, colui che mi tradisce è vicino".	42 Get up! Let us go! My betrayer is not far away.'
43 E subito, mentre ancora parlava, arrivò Giuda, uno dei Dodici, e con lui una folla con spade e bastoni mandata dai sommi sacerdoti, dagli scribi e dagli anziani.	43 And at once, while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came up and with him a numberof men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
44 Chi lo tradiva aveva dato loro questo segno: "Quello che bacerò, è lui; arrestatelo e conducetelo via sotto buona scorta".	44 Now the traitor had arranged a signal with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him,and see he is well guarded when you lead him away.'
45 Allora gli si accostò dicendo: "Rabbì" e lo baciò.	45 So when the traitor came, he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Rabbi!' and kissed him.
46 Essi gli misero addosso le mani e lo arrestarono.	46 The others seized him and arrested him.
47 Uno dei presenti, estratta la spada, colpì il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli recise l'orecchio.	47 Then one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck out at the high priest's servant and cut off hisear.
48 Allora Gesù disse loro: "Come contro un brigante, con spade e bastoni siete venuti a prendermi.	48 Then Jesus spoke. 'Am I a bandit,' he said, 'that you had to set out to capture me with swords andclubs?
49 Ogni giorno ero in mezzo a voi a insegnare nel tempio, e non mi avete arrestato. Si adempiano dunque le Scritture!".	49 I was among you teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me. But this isto fulfil the scriptures.'
50 Tutti allora, abbandonandolo, fuggirono.	50 And they al deserted him and ran away.
51 Un giovanetto però lo seguiva, rivestito soltanto di un lenzuolo, e lo fermarono.	51 A young man fol owed with nothing on but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him,
52 Ma egli, lasciato il lenzuolo, fuggì via nudo.	52 but he left the cloth in their hands and ran away naked.
53 Allora condussero Gesù dal sommo sacerdote, e là si riunirono tutti i capi dei sacerdoti, gli anziani e gli scribi.	53 They led Jesus off to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribesassembled there.
54 Pietro lo aveva seguito da lontano, fin dentro il cortile del sommo sacerdote; e se ne stava seduto tra i servi, scaldandosi al fuoco.	54 Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the high priest's palace, and was sitting with theattendants warming himself at the fire.
55 Intanto i capi dei sacerdoti e tutto il sinedrio cercavano una testimonianza contro Gesù per metterlo a morte, ma non la trovavano.	55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus in order to havehim executed. But they could not find any.
56 Molti infatti attestavano il falso contro di lui e così le loro testimonianze non erano concordi.	56 Several, indeed, brought false witness against him, but their evidence was conflicting.
57 Ma alcuni si alzarono per testimoniare il falso contro di lui, dicendo:	57 Some stood up and submitted this false evidence against him,
58 "Noi lo abbiamo udito mentre diceva: Io distruggerò questo tempio fatto da mani d'uomo e in tre giorni ne edificherò un altro non fatto da mani d'uomo".	58 'We heard him say, "I am going to destroy this Temple made by human hands, and in three daysbuild another, not made by human hands." '
59 Ma nemmeno su questo punto la loro testimonianza era concorde.	59 But even on this point their evidence was conflicting.
60 Allora il sommo sacerdote, levatosi in mezzo all'assemblea, interrogò Gesù dicendo: "Non rispondi nulla? Che cosa testimoniano costoro contro di te?".	60 The high priest then rose before the whole assembly and put this question to Jesus, 'Have you noanswer to that? What is this evidence these men are bringing against you?'
61 Ma egli taceva e non rispondeva nulla. Di nuovo il sommo sacerdote lo interrogò dicendogli: "Sei tu il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio benedetto?".	61 But he was silent and made no answer at all. The high priest put a second question to him saying,'Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?'
62 Gesù rispose: "Io lo sono! E vedrete 'il Figlio dell'uomo seduto alla destra della Potenza e venire con le nubi del cielo'".	62 'I am,' said Jesus, 'and you wil see the Son of man seated at the right hand of the Power and comingwith the clouds of heaven.'
63 Allora il sommo sacerdote, stracciandosi le vesti, disse: "Che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimoni?	63 The high priest tore his robes and said, 'What need of witnesses have we now?
64 Avete udito la bestemmia; che ve ne pare?". Tutti sentenziarono che era reo di morte.	64 You heard the blasphemy. What is your finding?' Their verdict was unanimous: he deserved to die.
65 Allora alcuni cominciarono a sputargli addosso, a coprirgli il volto, a schiaffeggiarlo e a dirgli: "Indovina". I servi intanto lo percuotevano.	65 Some of them started spitting at his face, hitting him and saying, 'Play the prophet!' And theattendants struck him too.
66 Mentre Pietro era giù nel cortile, venne una serva del sommo sacerdote	66 While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant-girls came up.
67 e, vedendo Pietro che stava a scaldarsi, lo fissò e gli disse: "Anche tu eri con il Nazareno, con Gesù".	67 She saw Peter warming himself there, looked closely at him and said, 'You too were with Jesus, theman from Nazareth.'
68 Ma egli negò: "Non so e non capisco quello che vuoi dire". Uscì quindi fuori del cortile e il gallo cantò.	68 But he denied it. 'I do not know, I do not understand what you are talking about,' he said. And hewent out into the forecourt, and a cock crowed.
69 E la serva, vedendolo, ricominciò a dire ai presenti: "Costui è di quelli".	69 The servant-girl saw him and again started tel ing the bystanders, 'This man is one of them.'
70 Ma egli negò di nuovo. Dopo un poco i presenti dissero di nuovo a Pietro: "Tu sei certo di quelli, perché sei Galileo".	70 But again he denied it. A little later the bystanders themselves said to Peter, 'You are certainly one ofthem! Why, you are a Galilean.'
71 Ma egli cominciò a imprecare e a giurare: "Non conosco quell'uomo che voi dite".	71 But he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man you speak of.'
72 Per la seconda volta un gallo cantò. Allora Pietro si ricordò di quella parola che Gesù gli aveva detto: "Prima che il gallo canti due volte, mi rinnegherai per tre volte". E scoppiò in pianto.	72 And at once the cock crowed for the second time, and Peter recalled what Jesus had said to him,'Before the cock crows twice, you will have disowned me three times.' And he burst into tears.
