1 Abitava in Babilonia un uomo chiamato Ioakìm,	1 And there was a man living in Babylon, and his name was Joakim.
2 il quale aveva sposato una donna chiamata Susanna, figlia di Chelkìa, di rara bellezza e timorata di Dio.	2 And he received a wife named Susanna, the daughter of Hilkiah, who was very beautiful and God-fearing.
3 I suoi genitori, che erano giusti, avevano educato la figlia secondo la legge di Mosè.	3 For her parents, because they were righteous, had educated their daughter according to the law of Moses.
4 Ioakìm era molto ricco e possedeva un giardino vicino a casa ed essendo stimato più di ogni altro i Giudei andavano da lui.	4 But Joakim was very wealthy, and he had an orchard near his house, and the Jews flocked to him, because he was the most honorable of them all.
5 In quell'anno erano stati eletti giudici del popolo due anziani: erano di quelli di cui il Signore ha detto: "L'iniquità è uscita da Babilonia per opera di anziani e di giudici, che solo in apparenza sono guide del popolo".	5 And two elder judges had been appointed among the people that year, about whom the Lord has said, “Iniquity has come out of Babylon, from the elder judges, who seemed to govern the people.”
6 Questi frequentavano la casa di Ioakìm e tutti quelli che avevano qualche lite da risolvere si recavano da loro.	6 These frequented the house of Joakim, and all came to them, who had need of judgment.
7 Quando il popolo, verso il mezzogiorno, se ne andava, Susanna era solita recarsi a passeggiare nel giardino del marito.	7 But when the people departed at noontime, Susanna went in and walked around in her husband’s orchard.
8 I due anziani che ogni giorno la vedevano andare a passeggiare, furono presi da un'ardente passione per lei:	8 And the elders saw her entering and walking around every day, and they were inflamed with desire towards her.
9 persero il lume della ragione, distolsero gli occhi per non vedere il Cielo e non ricordare i giusti giudizi.	9 And they perverted their reason and turned away their eyes, so that they would not look to heaven, nor call to mind just judgments.
10 Eran colpiti tutt'e due dalla passione per lei,	10 And so they were both wounded by the love of her, yet they did not reveal their grief to one another.
11 ma l'uno nascondeva all'altro la sua pena, perché si vergognavano di rivelare la brama che avevano di unirsi a lei.	11 For they were ashamed to reveal to each other their desire, wanting to lie with her.
12 Ogni giorno con maggior desiderio cercavano di vederla. Un giorno uno disse all'altro:	12 And so they watched carefully every day to see her. And one said to the other,
13 "Andiamo pure a casa: è l'ora di desinare" e usciti se ne andarono.	13 “Let us go home, for it is lunch time.” And going out, they departed one from another.
14 Ma ritornati indietro, si ritrovarono di nuovo insieme e, domandandosi a vicenda il motivo, confessarono la propria passione. Allora studiarono il momento opportuno di poterla sorprendere sola.	14 And returning again, they came to the same place, and, each asking the other the reason, they admitted their desire. And then they agreed to set a time when they would be able to find her alone.
15 Mentre aspettavano l'occasione favorevole, Susanna entrò, come al solito, con due sole ancelle, nel giardino per fare il bagno, poiché faceva caldo.	15 But it happened, while they watched for an opportune day, that she entered at a particular time, just as yesterday and the day before, with only two maids, and she wanted to wash in the orchard, because it was so hot.
16 Non c'era nessun altro al di fuori dei due anziani nascosti a spiarla.	16 And there was no one there, except the two elders in hiding, and they were studying her.
17 Susanna disse alle ancelle: "Portatemi l'unguento e i profumi, poi chiudete la porta, perché voglio fare il bagno".	17 And so she said to the maids, “Bring me oil and ointments, and shut the doors of the orchard, so that I may wash.”
18 Esse fecero come aveva ordinato: chiusero le porte del giardino ed entrarono in casa dalla porta laterale per portare ciò che Susanna chiedeva, senza accorgersi degli anziani poiché si erano nascosti.	18 And they did as she ordered them. And they shut the doors of the orchard and left through a back door to fetch what she required, and they did not know that the elders were hiding within.
19 Appena partite le ancelle, i due anziani uscirono dal nascondiglio, corsero da lei e le dissero:	19 But when the maids had departed, the two elders arose and hurried to her, and they said,
20 "Ecco, le porte del giardino sono chiuse, nessuno ci vede e noi bruciamo di passione per te; acconsenti e datti a noi.	20 “Behold, the doors of the orchard are closed, and no one can see us, and we are in desire for you. Because of these things, consent to us and lie with us.
21 In caso contrario ti accuseremo; diremo che un giovane era con te e perciò hai fatto uscire le ancelle".	21 But if you will not, we will bear witness against you that a young man was with you and, for this reason, you sent your maids away from you.”
22 Susanna, piangendo, esclamò: "Sono alle strette da ogni parte. Se cedo, è la morte per me; se rifiuto, non potrò scampare dalle vostre mani.	22 Susanna sighed and said, “I am closed in on every side. For if I do this thing, it is death to me; yet if I do not do it, I will not escape your hands.
23 Meglio però per me cadere innocente nelle vostre mani che peccare davanti al Signore!".	23 But it is better for me to fall unavoidably into your hands, than to sin in the sight of the Lord.”
24 Susanna gridò a gran voce. Anche i due anziani gridarono contro di lei	24 And Susanna cried out with a loud voice, but the elders also cried out against her.
25 e uno di loro corse alle porte del giardino e le aprì.	25 And one of them hurried to the door of the orchard and opened it.
26 I servi di casa, all'udire tale rumore in giardino, si precipitarono dalla porta laterale per vedere che cosa stava accadendo.	26 And so, when the servants of the house heard the outcry in the orchard, they rushed in by the back door to see what was happening.
27 Quando gli anziani ebbero fatto il loro racconto, i servi si sentirono molto confusi, perché mai era stata detta una simile cosa di Susanna.	27 But after the old men had spoken, the servants were greatly ashamed, for there had never been anything of this kind said about Susanna. And it happened on the next day,
28 Il giorno dopo, tutto il popolo si adunò nella casa di Ioakìm, suo marito e andarono là anche i due anziani pieni di perverse intenzioni per condannare a morte Susanna.	28 when the people came to Joakim her husband, that the two appointed elders also came, full of wicked plans against Susanna, in order to put her to death.
29 Rivolti al popolo dissero: "Si faccia venire Susanna figlia di Chelkìa, moglie di Ioakìm". Mandarono a chiamarla	29 And they said before the people, “Send for Susanna, daughter of Hilkiah, the wife of Joakim.” And immediately they sent for her.
30 ed essa venne con i genitori, i figli e tutti i suoi parenti.	30 And she arrived with her parents, and sons, and all her relatives.
31 Susanna era assai delicata d'aspetto e molto bella di forme;	31 Moreover, Susanna was exceedingly delicate and beautiful in appearance.
32 aveva il velo e quei perversi ordinarono che le fosse tolto per godere almeno così della sua bellezza.	32 But those wicked ones commanded that her face should be uncovered, (for she was covered,) so that at least they might be satisfied with her beauty.
33 Tutti i suoi familiari e amici piangevano.	33 Therefore, her own and all who knew her wept.
34 I due anziani si alzarono in mezzo al popolo e posero le mani sulla sua testa.	34 Yet the two appointed elders, rising up in the midst of the people, set their hands upon her head.
35 Essa piangendo alzò gli occhi al cielo, con il cuore pieno di fiducia nel Signore.	35 And weeping, she gazed up to heaven, for her heart had faith in the Lord.
36 Gli anziani dissero: "Mentre noi stavamo passeggiando soli nel giardino, è venuta con due ancelle, ha chiuse le porte del giardino e poi ha licenziato le ancelle.	36 And the appointed elders said, “While we were talking a walk in the orchard alone, this one came in with two maids, and she shut the doors of the orchard, and she sent the maids away from her.
37 Quindi è entrato da lei un giovane che era nascosto, e si è unito a lei.	37 And a young man came to her, who was in hiding, and he lay down with her.
38 Noi che eravamo in un angolo del giardino, vedendo una tale nefandezza, ci siamo precipitati su di loro e li abbiamo sorpresi insieme.	38 Furthermore, since we were in a corner of the orchard, seeing this wickedness, we ran up to them, and we saw them consorting together.
39 Non abbiamo potuto prendere il giovane perché, più forte di noi, ha aperto la porta ed è fuggito.	39 And, indeed, we were unable to catch him, because he was stronger than us, and opening the doors, he leaped out.
40 Abbiamo preso lei e le abbiamo domandato chi era quel giovane, ma lei non ce l'ha voluto dire. Di questo noi siamo testimoni".	40 But, since we had apprehended this one, we demanded to know who the young man was, but she was unwilling to tell us. On this matter, we are witnesses.”
41 La moltitudine prestò loro fede poiché erano anziani e giudici del popolo e la condannò a morte.	41 The multitude believed them, just as if they were elders and the judges of the people, and they condemned her to death.
42 Allora Susanna ad alta voce esclamò: "Dio eterno, che conosci i segreti, che conosci le cose prima che accadano,	42 But Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said, “Eternal God, who knows what is hidden, who knows all things before they happen,
43 tu lo sai che hanno deposto il falso contro di me! Io muoio innocente di quanto essi iniquamente hanno tramato contro di me".	43 you know that they have borne false witness against me, and behold, I must die, though I have done none of these things, which these men have maliciously invented against me.”
44 E il Signore ascoltò la sua voce.	44 But the Lord heeded her voice.
45 Mentre Susanna era condotta a morte, il Signore suscitò il santo spirito di un giovanetto, chiamato Daniele,	45 And when she was led away to death, the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young boy, whose name was Daniel.
46 il quale si mise a gridare: "Io sono innocente del sangue di lei!".	46 And he cried out with a loud voice, “I am clean of the blood of this one.”
47 Tutti si voltarono verso di lui dicendo: "Che vuoi dire con le tue parole?".	47 And all the people, turning back towards him, said, “What is this word that you are saying?”
48 Allora Daniele, stando in mezzo a loro, disse: "Siete così stolti, Israeliti? Avete condannato a morte una figlia d'Israele senza indagare la verità!	48 But he, while standing in the midst of them, said, “Are you so foolish, sons of Israel, that without judging and without knowing what the truth is, you have condemned a daughter of Israel?
49 Tornate al tribunale, perché costoro hanno deposto il falso contro di lei".	49 Return to judgment, because they have spoken false witness against her.”
50 Il popolo tornò subito indietro e gli anziani dissero a Daniele: "Vieni, siedi in mezzo a noi e facci da maestro, poiché Dio ti ha dato il dono dell'anzianità".	50 Therefore, the people returned with haste, and the old men said to him, “Come and sit down in our midst and show us, since God has given you the honor of old age.”
51 Daniele esclamò: "Separateli bene l'uno dall'altro e io li giudicherò".	51 And Daniel said to them, “Separate these at a distance from one another, and I will judge between them.”
52 Separati che furono, Daniele disse al primo: "O invecchiato nel male! Ecco, i tuoi peccati commessi in passato vengono alla luce,	52 And so, when they were divided, one from the other, he called one of them, and he said to him, “You deep-rooted ancient evil, now your sins have come out, which you have committed before,
53 quando davi sentenze ingiuste opprimendo gli innocenti e assolvendo i malvagi, mentre il Signore ha detto: Non ucciderai il giusto e l'innocente.	53 judging unjust judgments, oppressing the innocent, and setting free the guilty, though the Lord declares, ‘The innocent and the just you must not put to death.’
54 Ora dunque, se tu hai visto costei, di': sotto quale albero tu li hai visti stare insieme?". Rispose: "Sotto un lentisco".	54 Now then, if you saw her, declare under which tree you saw them conversing together.” He said, “Under an evergreen mastic tree.”
55 Disse Daniele: "In verità, la tua menzogna ricadrà sulla tua testa. Già l'angelo di Dio ha ricevuto da Dio la sentenza e ti spaccherà in due".	55 But Daniel said, “Truly, you have lied against your own head. For behold, the angel of God, having received the sentence from him, will split you down the middle.
56 Allontanato questo, fece venire l'altro e gli disse: "Razza di Canaan e non di Giuda, la bellezza ti ha sedotto, la passione ti ha pervertito il cuore!	56 And, having put him aside, he commanded the other to approach, and he said to him, “You offspring of Canaan, and not of Judah, beauty has deceived you, and desire has perverted your heart.
57 Così facevate con le donne d'Israele ed esse per paura si univano a voi. Ma una figlia di Giuda non ha potuto sopportare la vostra iniquità.	57 Thus did you do to the daughters of Israel, and they, out of fear, consorted with you, but a daughter of Judah would not tolerate your iniquity.
58 Dimmi dunque, sotto quale albero li hai trovati insieme?". Rispose: "Sotto un leccio".	58 Now then, declare to me, under which tree you caught them conversing together.” He said, “Under an evergreen oak tree.”
59 Disse Daniele: "In verità anche la tua menzogna ti ricadrà sulla testa. Ecco l'angelo di Dio ti aspetta con la spada in mano per spaccarti in due e così farti morire".	59 And Daniel said to him, “Truly, you also have lied against your own head. For the angel of the Lord waits, holding a sword, to cut you down the middle and put you to death.”
60 Allora tutta l'assemblea diede in grida di gioia e benedisse Dio che salva coloro che sperano in lui.	60 And then the entire assembly cried out in a loud voice, and they blessed God, who saves those who hope in him.
61 Poi insorgendo contro i due anziani, ai quali Daniele aveva fatto confessare con la loro bocca di aver deposto il falso, fece loro subire la medesima pena alla quale volevano assoggettare il prossimo	61 And they rose up against the two appointed elders, (for Daniel had convicted them, by their own mouth, of bearing false witness,) and they did to them just as they had wickedly done against their neighbor,
62 e applicando la legge di Mosè li fece morire. In quel giorno fu salvato il sangue innocente.	62 so as to act according to the law of Moses. And they put them to death, and innocent blood was saved on that day.
63 Chelkìa e sua moglie resero grazie a Dio per la figlia Susanna insieme con il marito Ioakìm e tutti i suoi parenti, per non aver trovato in lei nulla di men che onesto.	63 But Hilkiah and his wife praised God for their daughter, Susanna, with Joakim, her husband, and all her relatives, because there had been found in her no disgrace.
64 Da quel giorno in poi Daniele divenne grande di fronte al popolo.	64 And so Daniel became great in the sight of the people from that day, and thereafter.
	65 And king Astyages was laid to rest with his fathers. And Cyrus the Persian received his kingdom.
