1 Non essere precipitoso con la bocca e il tuo cuore non si affretti a proferir parola davanti a Dio, perché Dio è in cielo e tu sei sulla terra; perciò le tue parole siano parche, poiché	1 Be in no hurry to speak; do not hastily declare yourself before God; for God is in heaven, you on earth.Be sparing, then, of speech:
2 Dalle molte preoccupazioni vengono i sogni e dalle molte chiacchiere il discorso dello stolto.	2 From too much worrying comes illusion, from too much talking, the accents of fol y.
3 Quando hai fatto un voto a Dio, non indugiare a soddisfarlo, perché egli non ama gli stolti: adempi quello che hai promesso.	3 If you make a vow to God, discharge it without delay, for God has no love for fools. Discharge your vow.
4 È meglio non far voti, che farli e poi non mantenerli.	4 Better a vow unmade than made and not discharged.
5 Non permettere alla tua bocca di renderti colpevole e non dire davanti al messaggero che è stata una inavvertenza, perché Dio non abbia ad adirarsi per le tue parole e distrugga il lavoro delle tue mani.	5 Do not al ow your mouth to make a sinner of you, and do not say to the messenger that it was amistake. Why give God occasion to be angry with you and ruin al the work that you have done?
6 Poiché dai molti sogni provengono molte delusioni e molte parole. Abbi dunque il timor di Dio.	6 From too many illusions come futility and too much talk. Therefore, fear God.
7 Se vedi nella provincia il povero oppresso e il diritto e la giustizia calpestati, non ti meravigliare di questo, poiché sopra un'autorità veglia un'altra superiore e sopra di loro un'altra ancora più alta:	7 If in a province you see the poor oppressed, fair judgement and justice violated, do not be surprised, forover every official there watches a higher official, and over these, higher officials stil .
8 l'interesse del paese in ogni cosa è un re che si occupa dei campi.	8 But what the land yields is for the benefit of al , a king is served by the fields.
9 Chi ama il denaro, mai si sazia di denaro e chi ama la ricchezza, non ne trae profitto. Anche questo è vanità.	9 No one who loves money ever has enough, no one who loves luxury has any income; this, too, is futile.
10 Con il crescere dei beni i parassiti aumentano e qual vantaggio ne riceve il padrone, se non di vederli con gli occhi?	10 Where goods abound, parasites abound: where is the owner's profit, apart from feasting his eyes?
11 Dolce è il sonno del lavoratore, poco o molto che mangi; ma la sazietà del ricco non lo lascia dormire.	11 The labourer's sleep is sweet, whether he has eaten little or much, but the surfeit of the rich wil not lethim sleep at al .
12 Un altro brutto malanno ho visto sotto il sole: ricchezze custodite dal padrone a proprio danno.	12 Something grossly unjust I observe under the sun: riches stored and turning to loss for their owner.
13 Se ne vanno in fumo queste ricchezze per un cattivo affare e il figlio che gli è nato non ha nulla nelle mani.	13 An unlucky venture, and those riches are lost; a son is born to him, and he has nothing to leave him.
14 Come è uscito nudo dal grembo di sua madre, così se ne andrà di nuovo come era venuto, e dalle sue fatiche non ricaverà nulla da portar con sé.	14 Naked from his mother's womb he came; as naked as he came wil he depart; not one of hisachievements can he take with him.
15 Anche questo è un brutto malanno: che se ne vada proprio come è venuto. Qual vantaggio ricava dall'aver gettato le sue fatiche al vento?	15 And something else grossly unjust: that as he came, so must he go; what profit can he show aftertoiling to earn the wind,
16 Inoltre avrà passato tutti i suoi giorni nell'oscurità e nel pianto fra molti guai, malanni e crucci.	16 as he spends the rest of his days in darkness, mourning, many sorrows, sickness and exasperation.
17 Ecco quello che ho concluso: è meglio mangiare e bere e godere dei beni in ogni fatica durata sotto il sole, nei pochi giorni di vita che Dio gli dà: è questa la sua sorte.	17 So my conclusion is this: true happiness lies in eating and drinking and enjoying whatever has beenachieved under the sun, throughout the life given by God: for this is the lot of humanity.
18 Ogni uomo, a cui Dio concede ricchezze e beni, ha anche facoltà di goderli e prendersene la sua parte e di godere delle sue fatiche: anche questo è dono di Dio.	18 And whenever God gives someone riches and property, with the ability to enjoy them and to findcontentment in work, this is a gift from God.
19 Egli non penserà infatti molto ai giorni della sua vita, poiché Dio lo tiene occupato con la gioia del suo cuore.	19 For such a person wil hardly notice the passing of time, so long as God keeps his heart occupied withjoy.
