1 Nicànore, avendo saputo che gli uomini di Giuda si trovavano nella regione della Samaria, decise di assalirli a colpo sicuro nel giorno del riposo.	1 Nicanor heard that Judas and his men were in the neighbourhood of Samaria, so he decided to attackthem, at no risk to himself, on the day of rest.
2 Poiché i Giudei che l'avevano seguito forzatamente gli dicevano: "Assolutamente non devi ucciderli in modo così crudele e barbaro; rendi onore al giorno che è stato già onorato rivestendolo di santità da colui che tutto vede",	2 Those Jews who had been compel ed to follow him, said, 'Do not massacre them in such a savage,barbarous way. Respect the day on which the All-seeing has conferred a special holiness.'
3 quell'uomo tre volte scellerato chiese se c'era in cielo un Signore che aveva comandato di celebrare il giorno del sabato.	3 At this the triple-dyed scoundrel asked if there were in heaven a sovereign who had ordered thekeeping of the Sabbath day.
4 Essi risposero: "Vi è il Signore vivente; egli è il sovrano del cielo, che ha comandato di celebrare il settimo giorno".	4 When they answered, 'The living Lord himself, the Heavenly Sovereign, has ordered the observanceof the seventh day,'
5 L'altro ribatté: "E io sono sovrano sulla terra, che comando di prendere le armi e portare a termine le disposizioni del re". Tuttavia non riuscì a mandare ad effetto il suo crudele intento.	5 he retorted, 'And I, as sovereign on earth, order you to take up arms and do the king's business.' Foral that, he did not manage to carry out his wicked plan.
6 Nicànore, dunque, alzata la testa con tutta la superbia, aveva decretato di erigere un pubblico trofeo per la vittoria sugli uomini di Giuda.	6 While Nicanor, in his unlimited boastfulness and pride, was planning to erect a general trophy with thespoils taken from Judas and his men,
7 Il Maccabeo invece era costantemente convinto e pienamente fiducioso di trovare protezione da parte del Signore.	7 Maccabaeus remained firm in his confident conviction that the Lord would stand by him.
8 Esortava i suoi uomini a non temere l'attacco dei pagani, ma a tener fissi in mente gli aiuti che in passato erano venuti loro dal Cielo e ad aspettare ora la vittoria che sarebbe stata loro concessa dall'Onnipotente.	8 He urged his men not to be dismayed by the foreigners' attacks but, keeping in mind the help that hadcome to them from Heaven in the past, to be confident that this time too victory would be theirs with the help ofthe Almighty.
9 Confortandoli così con le parole della legge e dei profeti e ricordando loro le lotte che avevano già condotte a termine, li rese più coraggiosi.	9 He put fresh heart into them by citing the Law and the Prophets and, by stirring up memories of thebattles they had already won, he fil ed them with new enthusiasm.
10 Avendo così stimolato i loro sentimenti, espose e denunziò la malafede dei pagani e la violazione dei giuramenti.	10 Having thus aroused their courage, he ended his exhortation by demonstrating the treachery of theforeigners and how they had violated their oaths.
11 Dopo aver armato ciascuno di loro non tanto con la sicurezza degli scudi e delle lance quanto con il conforto delle egregie parole, li riempì di gioia, narrando loro un sogno degno di fede, anzi una vera visione.	11 Having armed each one of them not so much with the safety given by shield and lance as with thatconfidence which springs from noble language, he encouraged them al by describing to them a convincingdream -- a vision, as it were.
12 La sua visione era questa: Onia, che era stato sommo sacerdote, uomo eccellente, modesto nel portamento, mite nel contegno, dignitoso nel proferir parole, occupato dalla fanciullezza in quanto riguardava la virtù, con le mani protese pregava per tutta la nazione giudaica.	12 What he had seen was this: Onias, the former high priest, that paragon of men, modest of bearingand gentle of manners, suitably eloquent and trained from boyhood in the practice of every virtue -- Onias wasstretching out his hands and praying for the whole Jewish community.
13 Gli era anche apparso un personaggio che si distingueva per la canizie e la dignità ed era rivestito di una maestà meravigliosa e piena di magnificenza.	13 Next, there appeared a man equal y remarkable for his great age and dignity and invested with amarvel ous and impressive air of majesty.
14 Onia disse: "Questi è l'amico dei suoi fratelli, colui che innalza molte preghiere per il popolo e per la città santa, Geremia il profeta di Dio".	14 Onias began to speak: 'This is a man', he said, 'who loves his brothers and prays much for thepeople and the holy city-Jeremiah, the prophet of God.'
15 E Geremia stendendo la destra consegnò a Giuda una spada d'oro, pronunciando queste parole nel porgerla:	15 Jeremiah then stretched out his right hand and presented Judas with a golden sword, saying as hegave it,
16 "Prendi la spada sacra come dono da parte di Dio; con questa abbatterai i nemici".	16 'Take this holy sword as a gift from God; with it you wil shatter the enemy.'
17 Esortati dalle bellissime parole di Giuda, capaci di spingere all'eroismo e di rendere virile anche l'animo dei giovani, decisero di non restare in campo, ma di intervenire coraggiosamente e decidere la sorte attaccando battaglia con tutto il coraggio, perché la città e le cose sante e il tempio erano in pericolo.	17 Encouraged by the noble words of Judas, which had the power to inspire valour and give the youngthe spirit of mature men, they decided not to entrench themselves in a camp, but bravely to take the offensiveand, in hand-to-hand fighting, to commit the result to the fortune of war, since the city, their holy religion and theTemple were in danger.
18 Minore era il loro timore per le donne e i figli come pure per i fratelli e i parenti, poiché la prima e principale preoccupazione era per il tempio consacrato.	18 Their concern for their wives and children, their brothers and relatives, had shrunk to minuteimportance; their chief and greatest fear was for the consecrated Temple.
19 Anche per quelli rimasti in città non era piccola l'angoscia, essendo tutti turbati per l'ansia del combattimento in campo aperto.	19 Those left behind in the city felt a similar anxiety, alarmed as they were about the forthcomingencounter in the open country.
20 Mentre tutti erano in attesa della prova imminente e i nemici già avevano cominciato ad attaccare e l'esercito era in ordine di battaglia e gli elefanti erano piazzati in posizione opportuna e la cavalleria schierata ai lati,	20 Everyone now awaited the coming issue. The enemy had already concentrated their forces andstood formed up in order of battle, with the elephants drawn up in a strategic position and the cavalry disposedon the wings.
21 il Maccabeo dopo aver osservato le moltitudini presenti e la svariata attrezzatura delle armi e la ferocia delle bestie, alzò le mani al cielo e invocò il Signore che compie prodigi, convinto che non è possibile vincere con le armi, ma che egli concede la vittoria a coloro che ne sono degni, secondo il suo giudizio.	21 Maccabaeus took note of these masses confronting him, the glittering array of armour and the fierceaspect of the elephants; then, raising his hands to heaven, he called on the Lord who works miracles, in theknowledge that it is not by force of arms but as he sees fit to decide, that victory is granted by him to such asdeserve it.
22 Invocando il Signore, si esprimeva in questo modo: "Tu, Signore, inviasti il tuo angelo al tempo di Ezechia re della Giudea ed egli fece perire nel campo di Sennàcherib centottantacinquemila uomini.	22 His prayer was worded thus: 'You, Master, sent your angel in the days of Hezekiah king of Judaea,and he destroyed no less than one hundred and eighty-five thousand of Sennacherib's army;
23 Anche ora, sovrano del cielo, manda un angelo buono davanti a noi per incutere paura e tremore.	23 now, once again, Sovereign of heaven, send a good angel before us to spread terror and dismay.
24 Siano atterriti dalla potenza del tuo braccio coloro che bestemmiando sono venuti qui contro il tuo santo tempio". Con queste parole egli terminò.	24 May these men be struck down by the might of your arm, since they have come with blasphemy ontheir lips to attack your holy people.' And on these words he finished.
25 Gli uomini di Nicànore avanzavano al suono delle trombe e degli inni di guerra.	25 Nicanor and his men advanced to the sound of trumpets and war songs,
26 Invece gli uomini di Giuda con invocazioni e preghiere si gettarono nella mischia contro i nemici.	26 but the men of Judas closed with the enemy uttering invocations and prayers.
27 In tal modo combattendo con le mani e pregando Dio con il cuore, travolsero non meno di trentacinquemila uomini, rallegrandosi grandemente per la manifesta presenza di Dio.	27 Fighting with their hands and praying to God in their hearts, they cut down at least thirty-fivethousand men and were greatly cheered by this manifestation of God.
28 Terminata la battaglia, mentre facevano ritorno pieni di gioia, riconobbero Nicànore caduto con tutte le sue armi.	28 When the engagement was over and they were withdrawing in triumph, they recognised Nicanor,lying dead in ful armour.
29 Levarono alte grida dandosi all'entusiasmo, mentre benedicevano l'Onnipotente nella lingua paterna.	29 With shouting and confusion all around, they blessed the sovereign Master in their ancestral tongue.
30 Quindi colui che era stato sempre il primo a combattere per i suoi concittadini con anima e corpo, colui che aveva conservato l'affetto della prima età verso i suoi connazionali, comandò che tagliassero la testa di Nicànore e la sua mano con il braccio e li portassero a Gerusalemme.	30 He who, as protagonist, had devoted himself, body and soul, to his fel ow-citizens, and hadpreserved the love he felt even in youth for those of his own race, gave orders for Nicanor's head to be cut off,with his arm up to the shoulder, and taken to Jerusalem.
31 Quando vi giunse, chiamò a raccolta tutti i connazionali e i sacerdoti davanti all'altare: sostando in mezzo a loro mandò a chiamare quelli dell'Acra	31 When he arrived there himself, he cal ed his countrymen together, stationed the priests in front of thealtar and then sent for the people from the Citadel.
32 e mostrò loro la testa dell'empio Nicànore e la mano che quel bestemmiatore aveva steso contro la sacra dimora dell'Onnipotente pronunciando parole orgogliose.	32 He showed them the head of the abominable Nicanor, and the hand which this infamous man hadstretched out so insolently against the holy House of the Almighty.
33 Tagliata poi la lingua del sacrilego Nicànore, la fece gettare a pezzi agli uccelli e ordinò di appendere davanti al tempio la mercede della sua follia.	33 Then, cutting out godless Nicanor's tongue, he gave orders for it to be fed piecemeal to the birds,and for the salary of his folly to be hung up in front of the Temple.
34 Tutti allora, rivolti verso il cielo, benedissero il Signore glorioso dicendo: "Benedetto colui che ha conservato la sua dimora inviolata".	34 At this, everyone sent blessings heavenwards to the glorious Lord, saying, 'Blessed be he who haspreserved his holy place from pol ution!'
35 Fece poi appendere la testa di Nicànore all'Acra alla vista di tutti, perché fosse segno manifesto dell'aiuto di Dio.	35 He hung Nicanor's head from the Citadel, a clear and evident sign to al of the help of the Lord.
36 Quindi decretarono unanimemente con voto pubblico di non lasciar passare inosservato quel giorno, ma di commemorarlo il tredici del decimosecondo mese - che in lingua siriaca si chiama Adar - il giorno precedente la festa di Mardocheo.	36 They al decreed by public vote never to let that day go by unobserved, but to celebrate thethirteenth day of the twelfth month, cal ed Adar in Aramaic, the eve of what is called the Day of Mordecai.
37 Così andarono le cose riguardo a Nicànore e, poiché da quel tempo la città è rimasta in mano agli Ebrei, anch'io chiudo qui la mia narrazione.	37 So ends the episode of Nicanor, and as, since then, the city has remained in the possession of theHebrews, I shal bring my own work to an end here too.
38 Se la disposizione dei fatti è riuscita scritta bene e ben composta, era quello che volevo; se invece è riuscita di poco valore e mediocre, questo solo ho potuto fare.	38 If it is wel composed and to the point, that is just what I wanted. If it is worthless and mediocre, thatis al I could manage.
39 Come il bere solo vino e anche il bere solo acqua è dannoso e viceversa come il vino mescolato con acqua è amabile e procura un delizioso piacere, così l'arte di ben disporre l'argomento delizia gli orecchi di coloro a cui capita di leggere la composizione. E qui sia la fine.	39 Just as it is injurious to drink wine by itself, or again water alone, whereas wine mixed with water ispleasant and produces a delightful sense of wel -being, so skil in presenting the incidents is what delights theunderstanding of those who read the book. And here I close.
