1 Dopo un periodo di tre anni, venne all'orecchio degli uomini di Giuda che Demetrio, figlio di Selèuco, era sbarcato nel porto di Tripoli con un grande esercito e la flotta	1 After three years was Judas informed, that Demetrius the son of Seleucus, having entered by the haven of Tripolis with a great power and navy,
2 e si era impadronito del paese, eliminando Antioco e il suo tutore Lisia.	2 Had taken the country, and killed Antiochus, and Lysias his protector.
3 Un certo Àlcimo, che era stato prima sommo sacerdote, ma che si era volontariamente contaminato nei giorni della secessione, accorgendosi che per nessun verso si apriva a lui una via di salvezza né ulteriore accesso al sacro altare,	3 Now one Alcimus, who had been high priest, and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles, seeing that by no means he could save himself, nor have any more access to the holy altar,
4 andò dal re Demetrio verso l'anno centocinquantuno offrendogli una corona d'oro e una palma oltre ai tradizionali ramoscelli di ulivo del tempio e per quel giorno stette quieto.	4 Came to king Demetrius in the hundred and one and fiftieth year, presenting unto him a crown of gold, and a palm, and also of the boughs which were used solemnly in the temple: and so that day he held his peace.
5 Ma colse l'occasione favorevole alla sua follia, quando fu chiamato da Demetrio al consiglio e fu interrogato in quale disposizione e mentalità si tenessero i Giudei. A questa richiesta rispose:	5 Howbeit having gotten opportunity to further his foolish enterprize, and being called into counsel by Demetrius, and asked how the Jews stood affected, and what they intended, he answered thereunto:
6 "I Giudei che si dicono Asidèi, a capo dei quali sta Giuda il Maccabeo, alimentano guerre e ribellioni e non lasciano che il regno trovi la tranquillità.	6 Those of the Jews that he called Assideans, whose captain is Judas Maccabeus, nourish war and are seditious, and will not let the rest be in peace.
7 Per questo anch'io, privato della dignità ereditaria, intendo dire del sommo sacerdozio, sono venuto qui,	7 Therefore I, being deprived of mine ancestors' honour, I mean the high priesthood, am now come hither:
8 spinto anzitutto da schietta premura per gli interessi del re e dalla preoccupazione della sconsideratezza delle suddette persone, in secondo luogo mirando ai miei concittadini, perché, a causa del disordine della situazione descritta, tutto il nostro popolo viene non poco impoverito.	8 First, verily for the unfeigned care I have of things pertaining to the king; and secondly, even for that I intend the good of mine own countrymen: for all our nation is in no small misery through the unadvised dealing of them aforersaid.
9 Ora che sai queste cose in particolare, tu, re, provvedi al paese e alla nostra stirpe che va decadendo, con quella cortese benevolenza che hai con tutti.	9 Wherefore, O king, seeing knowest all these things, be careful for the country, and our nation, which is pressed on every side, according to the clemency that thou readily shewest unto all.
10 Fin quando Giuda è là, la situazione non può mettersi tranquilla".	10 For as long as Judas liveth, it is not possible that the state should be quiet.
11 Dopo queste sue parole, gli altri amici, irritati per i successi di Giuda, si affrettarono a infiammare Demetrio.	11 This was no sooner spoken of him, but others of the king's friends, being maliciously set against Judas, did more incense Demetrius.
12 Questi, designato subito Nicànore, già a capo degli elefanti, e nominatolo stratega della Giudea, lo inviò	12 And forthwith calling Nicanor, who had been master of the elephants, and making him governor over Judea, he sent him forth,
13 con l'ordine di eliminare prima Giuda, di disperdere i suoi uomini e di costituire Àlcimo sommo sacerdote del tempio massimo.	13 Commanding him to slay Judas, and to scatter them that were with him, and to make Alcimus high priest of the great temple.
14 Allora i pagani della Giudea, che erano fuggiti davanti a Giuda, si univano in massa a Nicànore sapendo che le sfortune e le calamità dei Giudei sarebbero state apportatrici di fortuna per loro.	14 Then the heathen, that had fled out of Judea from Judas, came to Nicanor by flocks, thinking the harm and calamities ot the Jews to be their welfare.
15 Quando seppero della venuta di Nicànore e dell'aggressione dei pagani, i Giudei cosparsi di polvere, elevarono suppliche a colui che ha stabilito il suo popolo per i secoli e che con segni palesi sempre protegge la sua porzione.	15 Now when the Jews heard of Nicanor's coming, and that the heathen were up against them, they cast earth upon their heads, and made supplication to him that had established his people for ever, and who always helpeth his portion with manifestation of his presence.
16 Poi il comandante, dati gli ordini, mosse rapidamente di là e si scontrò con loro presso il villaggio di Dessau.	16 So at the commandment of the captain they removed straightways from thence, and came near unto them at the town of Dessau.
17 Simone, fratello di Giuda, aveva già attaccato Nicànore, ma era rimasto battuto per l'improvvisa comparsa dei nemici.	17 Now Simon, Judas' brother, had joined battle with Nicanor, but was somewhat discomfited through the sudden silence of his enemies.
18 Tuttavia Nicànore, sentendo parlare del valore che avevano gli uomini di Giuda e del loro entusiasmo nelle lotte per la patria, non si arrischiava a decidere la sorte con spargimento di sangue.	18 Nevertheless Nicanor, hearing of the manliness of them that were with Judas, and the courageousness that they had to fight for their country, durst not try the matter by the sword.
19 Per questo mandò Posidonio e Teòdoto e Mattatia a dare e ricevere la destra per la pace.	19 Wherefore he sent Posidonius, and Theodotus, and Mattathias, to make peace.
20 Fu fatto un lungo esame intorno a queste cose e, quando il comandante ne diede comunicazione alle truppe, il parere risultò concorde e accettarono gli accordi.	20 So when they had taken long advisement thereupon, and the captain had made the multitude acquainted therewith, and it appeared that they were all of one mind, they consented to the covenants,
21 Fissarono il giorno nel quale sarebbero venuti a un incontro privato. Dall'una e dall'altra parte avanzò una lettiga e collocarono dei seggi.	21 And appointed a day to meet in together by themselves: and when the day came, and stools were set for either of them,
22 Giuda tuttavia dispose degli uomini armati nei luoghi opportuni per paura che si verificasse d'improvviso qualche tradimento da parte dei nemici: così in buon accordo tennero il convegno.	22 Ludas placed armed men ready in convenient places, lest some treachery should be suddenly practised by the enemies: so they made a peaceable conference.
23 Nicànore si trattenne in Gerusalemme e non fece alcun gesto fuori luogo; anzi licenziò le turbe raccogliticce che gli si erano unite.	23 Now Nicanor abode in Jerusalem, and did no hurt, but sent away the people that came flocking unto him.
24 Voleva Giuda sempre alla sua presenza, sentiva un'intima inclinazione per quel prode.	24 And he would not willingly have Judas out of his sight: for he love the man from his heart
25 L'esortò a sposarsi e ad avere figli; e quegli si sposò, poté mettersi a posto e godere giorni sereni.	25 He prayed him also to take a wife, and to beget children: so he married, was quiet, and took part of this life.
26 Ma Àlcimo, vedendo la loro reciproca simpatia e procuratosi copia degli accordi intercorsi, andò da Demetrio e gli disse che Nicànore seguiva una linea contraria agli interessi dello stato: aveva infatti nominato suo successore Giuda, il sobillatore del regno.	26 But Alcimus, perceiving the love that was betwixt them, and considering the covenants that were made, came to Demetrius, and told him that Nicanor was not well affected toward the state; for that he had ordained Judas, a traitor to his realm, to be the king's successor.
27 Il re, acceso di sdegno e irritato per le calunnie di quel genio malefico, scrisse a Nicànore, dichiarandogli di essere scontento delle alleanze concluse e ordinandogli che gli mandasse subito ad Antiochia il Maccabeo in catene.	27 Then the king being in a rage, and provoked with the accusations of the most wicked man, wrote to Nicanor, signifying that he was much displeased with the covenants, and commanding him that he should send Maccabeus prisoner in all haste unto Antioch.
28 Nicànore, sorpreso da questi ordini, rimase sconcertato e aveva ripugnanza a rompere le alleanze senza che l'uomo avesse commesso alcuna colpa.	28 When this came to Nicanor's hearing, he was much confounded in himself, and took it grievously that he should make void the articles which were agreed upon, the man being in no fault.
29 Ma, poiché non gli era possibile agire contro la volontà del re, cercava l'occasione per effettuare la cosa con qualche stratagemma.	29 But because there was no dealing against the king, he watched his time to accomplish this thing by policy.
30 Il Maccabeo, notando che Nicànore era più freddo nei rapporti con lui e che nei consueti incontri si comportava con durezza, arguendo che questa freddezza non presagiva niente di buono, raccolti non pochi dei suoi non si fece più vedere da Nicànore.	30 Notwithstanding, when Maccabeus saw that Nicanor began to be churlish unto him, and that he entreated him more roughly than he was wont, perceiving that such sour behaviour came not of good, he gathered together not a few of his men, and withdrew himself from Nicanor.
31 Quest'altro, accortosi di essere stato giocato abilmente da quell'uomo, salito al massimo e santo tempio, mentre i sacerdoti stavano compiendo i sacrifici prescritti, ordinò che gli fosse consegnato l'uomo.	31 But the other, knowing that he was notably prevented by Judas' policy, came into the great and holy temple, and commanded the priests, that were offering their usual sacrifices, to deliver him the man.
32 I sacerdoti dichiararono con giuramento che non sapevano dove mai fosse il ricercato	32 And when they sware that they could not tell where the man was whom he sought,
33 ma egli, stendendo la destra contro il tempio, giurò: "Se non mi consegnerete Giuda in catene, farò di questa dimora di Dio una piazza pulita, abbatterò dalle fondamenta l'altare e innalzerò qui uno splendido tempio a Dioniso".	33 He stretched out his right hand toward the temple, and made an oath in this manner: If ye will not deliver me Judas as a prisoner, I will lay this temple of God even with the ground, and I will break down the altar, and erect a notable temple unto Bacchus.
34 Dette queste grosse parole, se ne andò. I sacerdoti alzando le mani al cielo, invocarono il protettore sempre vigile del nostro popolo:	34 After these words he departed. Then the priests lifted up their hands toward heaven, and besought him that was ever a defender of their nation, saying in this manner;
35 "Tu, Signore, che di nulla hai bisogno, ti sei compiaciuto di porre il tempio della tua abitazione in mezzo a noi.	35 Thou, O Lord of all things, who hast need of nothing, wast pleased that the temple of thine habitation should be among us:
36 E ora tu, Santo e Signore di ogni santità, custodisci questa tua casa, appena purificata, per sempre libera da contaminazioni".	36 Therefore now, O holy Lord of all holiness, keep this house ever undefiled, which lately was cleansed, and stop every unrighteous mouth.
37 Fu denunziato a Nicànore un certo Razis degli anziani di Gerusalemme, uomo pieno di amore per la città, che godeva grandissima fama e chiamato per la sua benevolenza padre dei Giudei.	37 Now was there accused unto Nicanor one Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, a lover of his countrymen, and a man of very good report, who for his kindness was called a father of the Jews.
38 Egli infatti nei giorni precedenti la rivolta si era attirata l'accusa di giudaismo e realmente per il giudaismo aveva impegnato corpo e anima con piena generosità.	38 For in the former times, when they mingled not themselves with the Gentiles, he had been accused of Judaism, and did boldly jeopard his body and life with all vehemency for the religion of the Jews.
39 Volendo Nicànore far nota a tutti l'ostilità che aveva verso i Giudei, mandò più di cinquecento soldati per arrestarlo;	39 So Nicanor, willing to declare the hate that he bare unto the Jews, sent above five hundred men of war to take him:
40 pensava infatti che, prendendo costui, avrebbe arrecato loro un grave colpo.	40 For he thought by taking him to do the Jews much hurt.
41 Ma, quando quella truppa stava per occupare la torre e tentava di forzare la porta del cortile e ordinavano di portare il fuoco e di appiccarlo alle porte, egli, accerchiato da ogni lato, si piantò la spada in corpo,	41 Now when the multitude would have taken the tower, and violently broken into the outer door, and bade that fire should be brought to burn it, he being ready to be taken on every side fell upon his sword;
42 preferendo morire nobilmente piuttosto che divenire schiavo degli empi e subire insulti indegni della sua nobiltà.	42 Choosing rather to die manfully, than to come into the hands of the wicked, to be abused otherwise than beseemed his noble birth:
43 Non avendo però portato a segno il colpo per la fretta della lotta, mentre la folla premeva fuori delle porte, salì coraggiosamente sulle mura e si lasciò cadere a precipizio sulla folla con gesto da prode.	43 But missing his stroke through haste, the multitude also rushing within the doors, he ran boldly up to the wall, and cast himself down manfully among the thickest of them.
44 Essi lo scansarono immediatamente lasciando uno spazio libero ed egli cadde in mezzo allo spazio vuoto.	44 But they quickly giving back, and a space being made, he fell down into the midst of the void place.
45 Poiché respirava ancora, con l'animo infiammato, si alzò, mentre il sangue gli usciva a fiotti e le ferite lo straziavano e, attraversata di corsa la folla, salì su di un tratto di roccia,	45 Nevertheless, while there was yet breath within him, being inflamed with anger, he rose up; and though his blood gushed out like spouts of water, and his wounds were grievous, yet he ran through the midst of the throng; and standing upon a steep rock,
46 ormai completamente esangue; si strappò gli intestini e prendendoli con le mani li gettò contro la folla; morì in tal modo invocando il Signore della vita e dello spirito perché di nuovo glieli restituisse.	46 When as his blood was now quite gone, he plucked out his bowels, and taking them in both his hands, he cast them upon the throng, and calling upon the Lord of life and spirit to restore him those again, he thus died.
