1 Giuda venne a conoscere la fama dei Romani: che essi erano molto potenti e favorivano tutti quelli che simpatizzavano per loro e accordavano amicizia a quanti si rivolgevano a loro e che erano forti e potenti.	1 Judas had heard of the reputation of the Romans. They were valiant fighters and acted amiably to all who took their side. They established a friendly alliance with all who applied to them.
2 Gli furono narrate le loro guerre e le loro imprese gloriose compiute tra i Galli: come li avessero vinti e sottoposti al tributo.	2 He was also told of their battles and the brave deeds that they had performed against the Gauls, conquering them and forcing them to pay tribute.
3 Aveva saputo quanto avevano compiuto nella Spagna per impadronirsi delle miniere di oro e di argento che vi sono;	3 They had gotten possession of the silver and gold mines in Spain,
4 e come avevano sottomesso tutta la regione con la loro saggezza e costanza, benché il paese fosse assai lontano da loro, e avevano vinto i re che erano venuti contro di loro dall'estremità della terra: li avevano sconfitti e avevano inflitto loro gravi colpi e gli altri re pagavano loro il tributo ogni anno.	4 and by planning and persistence had conquered the whole country, although it was very remote from their own. They had crushed the kings who had come against them from the far corners of the earth and had inflicted on them severe defeat, and the rest paid tribute to them every year.
5 Avevano poi sconfitto in guerra e sottomesso Filippo e Perseo re dei Chittim e quanti si erano sollevati contro di loro.	5 Philip and Perseus, king of the Macedonians, and the others who opposed them in battle had been overwhelmed and subjugated.
6 Venne a sapere che Antioco, il grande re dell'Asia, era sceso in guerra contro di loro con centoventi elefanti e cavalleria e carri e un esercito immenso e fu sconfitto da loro,	6 Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who had fought against them with a hundred and twenty elephants and with cavalry and chariots and a very great army, had been defeated by them.

10 ma la cosa fu da loro risaputa e mandarono contro di quelli un solo generale; vennero a battaglia con loro e ne caddero uccisi molti; i Romani condussero in schiavitù le loro mogli e i loro figli e saccheggiarono i loro beni, conquistarono il paese e abbatterono le loro fortezze e li resero soggetti fino ad oggi.	10 the Romans discovered it, and sent against the Greeks a single general who made war on them. Many were wounded and fell, and the Romans took their wives and children captive. They plundered them, took possession of their land, tore down their strongholds and reduced them to slavery even to this day.
11 Gli altri regni e le isole e quanti per avventura si erano opposti a loro, li distrussero e soggiogarono; con i loro amici invece e con quanti si appoggiavano ad essi avevano mantenuto amicizia.	11 All the other kingdoms and islands that had ever opposed them they destroyed and enslaved;
12 Avevano assoggettato i re vicini e quelli lontani e quanti sentivano il loro nome ne avevano timore.	12 with their friends, however, and those who relied on them, they maintained friendship. They had conquered kings both far and near, and all who heard of their fame were afraid of them.
13 Quelli che essi vogliono aiutare e far regnare, regnano; quelli che essi vogliono, li depongono, tanto si sono innalzati in potenza.	13 In truth, those whom they desired to help to a kingdom became kings, and those whom they wished to depose they deposed; and they were greatly exalted.
14 Con tutti questi successi nessuno di loro si è imposto il diadema e non vestono la porpora per fregiarsene.	14 Yet with all this, none of them put on a crown or wore purple as a display of grandeur.
15 Essi hanno costituito un consiglio e ogni giorno trecentoventi consiglieri discutono pienamente riguardo al popolo perché tutto vada bene.	15 They had made for themselves a senate house, and every day three hundred and twenty men took counsel, deliberating on all that concerned the people and their well-being.
16 Affidano il comando e il governo di tutti i loro domíni a uno di loro per un anno e tutti obbediscono a quel solo e non c'è in loro invidia né gelosia.	16 They entrusted their government to one man every year, to rule over their entire country, and they all obeyed that one, and there was no envy or jealousy among them.
17 Giuda pertanto scelse Eupòlemo, figlio di Giovanni, figlio di Accos, e Giasone, figlio di Eleàzaro, e li inviò a Roma a stringere amicizia e alleanza	17 So Judas chose Eupolemus, son of John, son of Accos, and Jason, son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome to establish an alliance of friendship with them.
18 per liberarsi dal giogo, perché vedevano che il regno dei Greci riduceva Israele in schiavitù.	18 He did this to get rid of the yoke, for it was obvious that the kingdom of the Greeks was subjecting Israel to slavery.
19 Andarono fino a Roma con viaggio lunghissimo, entrarono nel senato e incominciarono a dire:	19 After making a very long journey to Rome, the envoys entered the senate and spoke as follows:
20 "Giuda, chiamato anche Maccabeo, e i suoi fratelli e il popolo dei Giudei ci hanno inviati a voi, per concludere con voi alleanza e amicizia e per essere iscritti tra i vostri alleati e amici".	20 "Judas, called Maccabeus, and his brothers, with the Jewish people, have sent us to you to make a peaceful alliance with you, and to enroll ourselves among your allies and friends."
21 Piacque loro la proposta.	21 The proposal pleased the Romans,
22 Questa è la copia della lettera che trascrissero su tavolette di bronzo e inviarono a Gerusalemme, perché vi rimanesse come documento di amicizia e alleanza per i Giudei.	22 and this is a copy of the reply they inscribed on bronze tablets and sent to Jerusalem, to remain there with the Jews as a record of peace and alliance:
23 "Salute ai Romani e al popolo dei Giudei per mare e per terra sempre; lungi da loro la spada nemica.	23 "May it be well with the Romans and the Jewish nation at sea and on land forever; may sword and enemy be far from them.
24 Se verrà mossa guerra prima contro Roma o contro uno qualsiasi dei suoi alleati in tutto il suo dominio,	24 But if war is first made on Rome, or any of its allies in any of their dominions,
25 il popolo dei Giudei combatterà al loro fianco con piena lealtà come suggerirà loro l'occasione;	25 the Jewish nation will help them wholeheartedly, as the occasion shall demand;
26 ai nemici non forniranno né procureranno granaglie, armi, denaro, navi, secondo la decisione di Roma, ma manterranno i loro impegni senza compenso.	26 and to those who wage war they shall not give nor provide grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without receiving any recompense.
27 Allo stesso modo se capiterà prima una guerra al popolo dei Giudei, combatteranno con loro i Romani con tutto l'animo, come permetteranno loro le circostanze;	27 In the same way, if war is made first on the Jewish nation, the Romans will help them willingly, as the occasion shall demand,
28 ai nemici non forniranno granaglie, armi, denaro, navi, secondo la decisione di Roma; osserveranno questi impegni senza frode.	28 and to those who are attacking them there shall not be given grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without deception.
29 Secondo queste formule i Romani hanno stabilito un'alleanza con il popolo dei Giudei.	29 On these terms the Romans have made an agreement with the Jewish people.
30 Se dopo queste decisioni vorranno gli uni o gli altri aggiungere o togliere qualche cosa, lo faranno di comune accordo e quello che avranno aggiunto o tolto sarà obbligatorio.	30 But if both parties hereafter decide to add or take away anything, they shall do as they choose, and whatever they shall add or take away shall be valid.
31 Riguardo poi ai mali che il re Demetrio compie ai loro danni, gli abbiamo scritto: Perché aggravi il giogo sui Giudei nostri amici e alleati?	31 "Moreover, concerning the wrongs that King Demetrius has done to them, we have written to him thus: 'Why have you made your yoke heavy upon our friends and allies the Jews?
32 Se dunque si appelleranno contro di te, difenderemo i loro diritti e ti faremo guerra per mare e per terra".	32 If they complain about you again, we will do them justice and make war on you by land and sea.'"
