1 Nell'anno centocinquantuno Demetrio, figlio di Selèuco, evase da Roma e sbarcò con pochi uomini in una città della costa e là si proclamò re.	1 In the year one hundred and fifty-one, Demetrius, son of Seleucus, set out from Rome, arrived with a few men in a city on the seacoast, and began to rule there.
2 Quando rientrò nella reggia dei suoi padri, l'esercito catturò Antioco e Lisia per consegnarglieli.	2 As he was preparing to enter the royal palace of his ancestors, the soldiers seized Antiochus and Lysias to bring them to him.
3 Informato della cosa, disse: "Non mostratemi la loro faccia".	3 When he was informed of this, he said, "Do not show me their faces."
4 Perciò i soldati li uccisero e Demetrio sedette sul trono del suo regno.	4 So the soldiers killed them, and Demetrius sat on the royal throne.
5 Allora andarono da lui tutti gli uomini perfidi ed empi d'Israele, guidati da Alcimo che aspirava al sommo sacerdozio.	5 Then all the lawless and impious men of Israel came to him. They were led by Alcimus, who desired to be high priest.
6 Essi accusarono il popolo davanti al re dicendo: "Giuda con i suoi fratelli ha sterminato tutti i tuoi amici e ci ha strappato dal nostro paese.	6 They made this accusation to the king against the people: "Judas and his brothers have destroyed all your friends and have driven us out of our country.
7 Ora manda un uomo fidato, che venga e prenda visione della rovina generale da quello procurata a noi e ai domini del re e provveda a punire quella famiglia e tutti i suoi sostenitori".	7 So now, send a man whom you trust to go and see all the havoc Judas has done to us and to the king's land, and let him punish them and all their supporters."
8 Il re designò Bàcchide, uno degli amici del re, preposto alla regione dell'Oltrefiume, potente nel regno e fedele al re,	8 Then the king chose Bacchides, one of the King's Friends, governor of West-of-Euphrates, a great man in the kingdom, and faithful to the king.
9 e lo inviò con l'empio Alcimo; attribuì a questi il sommo sacerdozio e gli diede ordine di far vendetta contro gli Israeliti.	9 He sent him and the impious Alcimus, to whom he granted the high priesthood, with orders to take revenge on the Israelites.
10 Così partirono e giunsero in Giudea con forze numerose. Bàcchide mandò messaggeri a Giuda e ai suoi fratelli per portare con inganno parole di pace.	10 They set out and, on arriving in the land of Judah with a great army, sent messengers who spoke deceitfully to Judas and his brothers in peaceful terms.
11 Ma essi non credettero alle sue parole: avevano infatti saputo che era giunto con un forte esercito.	11 But these paid no attention to their words, seeing that they had come with a great army.
12 Si radunò tuttavia presso Alcimo e Bàcchide un gruppo di scribi per chiedere il riconoscimento dei diritti.	12 A group of scribes, however, gathered about Alcimus and Bacchides to ask for a just agreement.
13 Gli Asidei furono i primi tra gli Israeliti a chieder loro la pace.	13 The Hasideans were the first among the Israelites to seek peace with them,
14 Dicevano infatti: "Un uomo della stirpe di Aronne è venuto con i soldati, non ci farà certo del male".	14 for they said, "A priest of the line of Aaron has come with the army, and he will not do us any wrong."
15 Egli usò con loro parole di pace e giurò loro: "Non faremo alcun male né a voi né ai vostri amici".	15 He spoke with them peacefully and swore to them, "We will not try to injure you or your friends."
16 E quelli credettero. Ma egli prese sessanta di loro e li uccise in un sol giorno, proprio secondo la parola che sta scritta:	16 So they trusted him. But he arrested sixty of them and killed them in one day, according to the text of Scripture:
17 '"Le carni dei tuoi santi e il loro sangue hanno sparso intorno a Gerusalemme e nessuno li seppelliva".'	17 "The flesh of your saints they have strewn, and their blood they have shed round about Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them."
18 Allora la paura e il terrore si sparsero per tutto il popolo, perché tutti dicevano: "Non c'è in loro verità né giustizia, perché hanno trasgredito l'alleanza e il giuramento prestato".	18 Then fear and dread of them came upon all the people, who said: "There is no truth or justice among them; they violated the agreement and the oath that they swore."
19 Bàcchide levò il campo da Gerusalemme e si accampò in Bet-Zait; mandò ad arrestare molti degli uomini che erano passati dalla sua parte e alcuni del popolo e li fece uccidere e gettare nel pozzo grande.	19 Bacchides withdrew from Jerusalem and pitched his camp in Beth-zaith. He had many of the men arrested who deserted to him, throwing them into the great pit.
20 Affidò il paese ad Alcimo e gli lasciò soldati che lo sostenessero; quindi Bàcchide fece ritorno dal re.	20 He handed the province over to Alcimus, leaving troops to help him, while he himself returned to the king.
21 Alcimo rivendicava con le armi il sommo sacerdozio;	21 Alcimus spared no pains to maintain his high priesthood,
22 tutti i perturbatori del popolo si unirono a lui, si impadronirono della Giudea e procurarono grandi sventure a Israele.	22 and all those who were disturbing their people gathered about him. They took possession of the land of Judah and caused great distress in Israel.
23 Giuda vide tutti i mali che facevano Alcimo e i suoi fautori agli Israeliti peggio dei pagani,	23 When Judas saw all the evils that Alcimus and his men were bringing upon the Israelites, more than even the Gentiles had done,
24 uscì allora nelle regioni intorno alla Giudea, fece vendetta degli uomini che avevano disertato e impedì loro di far scorrerie nella regione.	24 he went about all the borders of Judea and took revenge on the men who had deserted, preventing them from going out into the country.
25 Quando Alcimo vide che Giuda e i suoi si erano rinforzati e che non avrebbe potuto resister loro, ritornò presso il re e mosse contro di loro accuse di misfatti.	25 But when Alcimus saw that Judas and his followers were gaining strength and realized that he could not oppose them, he returned to the king and accused them of grave crimes.
26 Allora il re mandò Nicànore, uno dei suoi capi più illustri, che aveva odio e inimicizia per Israele e gli ordinò di sterminare il popolo.	26 Then the king sent Nicanor, one of his famous officers, who was a bitter enemy of Israel, with orders to destroy the people.
27 Nicànore venne in Gerusalemme con truppe ingenti e mandò messaggeri a Giuda e ai suoi fratelli con inganno a far queste proposte di pace:	27 Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a large force and deceitfully sent to Judas and his brothers this peaceable message:
28 "Non ci sia battaglia tra me e voi. Verrò con pochi uomini per incontrarmi pacificamente".	28 "Let there be no fight between me and you. I will come with a few men to meet you peaceably."
29 Venne da Giuda e si salutarono a vicenda con segni di pace: ma i nemici stavano pronti per metter le mani su Giuda.	29 So he came to Judas, and they greeted one another peaceably. But Judas' enemies were prepared to seize him.
30 Giuda fu informato che quello era venuto da lui con inganno, ed ebbe timore di lui e non volle più vedere la sua faccia.	30 When he became aware that Nicanor had come to him with treachery in mind, Judas was afraid and would not meet him again.
31 Nicànore si accorse che il suo piano era stato scoperto e uscì all'attacco contro Giuda verso Cafarsalama.	31 When Nicanor saw that his plan had been discovered, he went out to fight Judas near Capharsalama.
32 Caddero dalla parte di Nicànore circa cinquecento uomini; gli altri ripararono nella città di Davide.	32 About five hundred men of Nicanor's army fell; the rest fled to the City of David.
33 Dopo questi fatti Nicànore salì al monte Sion e gli vennero incontro dal santuario alcuni sacerdoti e anziani del popolo per salutarlo con espressioni di pace e mostrargli l'olocausto offerto per il re.	33 After this, Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests from the sanctuary and some of the elders of the people came out to greet him peaceably and to show him the holocaust that was being offered for the king.
34 Ma egli li schernì, li derise, anzi li contaminò e parlò con arroganza;	34 But he mocked and ridiculed them, defiled them, and spoke disdainfully.
35 giurò incollerito: "Se non sarà consegnato subito Giuda e il suo esercito nelle mie mani, vi assicuro che quando tornerò a guerra finita, darò alle fiamme questo tempio"; e se ne andò tutto furioso.	35 In a rage he swore: "If Judas and his army are not delivered to me at once, when I return victorious I will burn this temple down." He went away in great anger.
36 I sacerdoti rientrarono e stando davanti all'altare e al tempio dissero tra il pianto:	36 The priests, however, went in and stood before the altar and the sanctuary. They wept and said:
37 "Tu hai scelto questo tempio perché su di esso fosse invocato il tuo nome e fosse casa di orazione e di supplica per il tuo popolo.	37 "You have chosen this house to bear your name, to be a house of prayer and petition for your people.
38 Fa' vendetta di questo uomo e delle sue schiere; siano trafitti di spada. Ricòrdati delle loro bestemmie: non lasciarli sopravvivere".	38 Take revenge on this man and his army, and let them fall by the sword. Remember their blasphemies, and do not let them continue."
39 Nicànore uscì da Gerusalemme, si accampò a Bet-Coròn e gli andò incontro l'esercito della Siria.	39 Nicanor left Jerusalem and pitched his camp at Beth-horon, where the Syrian army joined him.
40 Giuda pose il campo in Adasa con tremila uomini e pregò:	40 But Judas camped in Adasa with three thousand men. Here Judas uttered this prayer:
41 "Quando gli ufficiali del re assiro dissero bestemmie, venne il tuo angelo e ne abbatté centottantacinquemila:	41 "When they who were sent by the king blasphemed, your angel went out and killed a hundred and eighty-five thousand of them.
42 abbatti allo stesso modo questo esercito davanti a noi oggi; sappiano tutti gli altri che egli ha parlato empiamente contro il tuo santuario e tu giudicalo secondo le sue empietà".	42 In the same way, crush this army before us today, and let the rest know that Nicanor spoke wickedly against your sanctuary; judge him according to his wickedness."
43 Si scontrarono gli eserciti in combattimento il tredici del mese di Adar e fu sconfitto l'esercito di Nicànore, anzi egli cadde in battaglia per primo.	43 The armies met in battle on the thirteenth day of the month Adar. Nicanor's army was crushed, and he himself was the first to fall in the battle.
44 Quando i suoi soldati videro che Nicànore era caduto, gettarono le armi e fuggirono.	44 When his army saw that Nicanor was dead, they threw down their arms and fled.
45 Li inseguirono per una giornata di cammino da Adasa fino a Ghezer e suonavano le trombe dietro a loro per dare l'allarme.	45 The Jews pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa to near Gazara, blowing the trumpets behind them as signals.
46 Uscirono allora uomini da tutti i villaggi della Giudea all'intorno e li accerchiarono; essi si voltavano gli uni contro gli altri e caddero tutti di spada: non ne rimase neppure uno.	46 From all the surrounding villages of Judea people came out and closed in on them. They hemmed them in, and all the enemies fell by the sword; not a single one escaped.
47 I Giudei presero le spoglie e il bottino, mozzarono la testa di Nicànore e la destra, che aveva steso con superbia, e le portarono e le esposero in Gerusalemme.	47 Then the Jews collected the spoils and the booty; they cut off Nicanor's head and his right arm, which he had lifted up so arrogantly. These they brought to Jerusalem and displayed there.
48 Il popolo fece gran festa e passò quel giorno come giornata di gioia straordinaria.	48 The people rejoiced greatly, and observed that day as a great festival.
49 Stabilirono di celebrare ogni anno questo giorno il tredici di Adar.	49 They decreed that it should be observed every year on the thirteenth of Adar.
50 Così la Giudea ebbe quiete per un po' di tempo.	50 And for a short time the land of Judah was quiet.
