1 Al suo posto sorse il figlio di lui Giuda, chiamato Maccabeo;	1 His son, Judas, known as Maccabaeus, then took his place.
2 lo aiutavano tutti i fratelli e quanti si erano legati al padre e conducevano la battaglia d'Israele con entusiasmo.	2 Al his brothers, and al who had attached themselves to his father, supported him, and they fought forIsrael with a wil .

Like a giant, he put on the breastplate and buckled on his warharness; he engaged in battle after battle, protecting the ranks with his sword.
4 Nelle sue gesta fu simile a leone, come leoncello ruggente sulla preda.	4 He was like a lion in his exploits, like a young lion roaring over its prey.
5 Inseguì gli empi braccandoli; i perturbatori del popolo distrusse con il fuoco.	5 He pursued and tracked down the renegades, he consigned those who troubled his people to theflames.
6 Gli empi sbigottirono per paura di lui e tutti i malfattori furono confusi e si avviò la salvezza per mano di lui.	6 The renegades quailed with the terror he inspired, all evil-doers were utterly confounded, anddeliverance went forward under his leadership.
7 Inflisse amarezze a molti re, rallegrò con le sue gesta Giacobbe; sempre la sua memoria sarà benedetta.	7 He brought bitterness to many a king and rejoicing to Jacob by his deeds, his memory is blessed forever and ever.
8 Egli passò per le città di Giuda e vi disperse gli empi e distolse l'ira da Israele.	8 He went through the towns of Judah eliminating the irreligious from them, and diverted the Retributionfrom Israel.
9 Divenne celebre fino all'estremità della terra perché radunò coloro che erano sperduti.	9 His name resounded to the ends of the earth, he rallied those who were on the point of perishing.
10 Apollonio radunò dei pagani e un forte esercito dalla Samaria per combattere Israele.	10 Next, Apollonius mustered the gentiles and a large force from Samaria to make war on Israel.
11 Giuda lo seppe e avanzò contro di lui, lo sconfisse e lo uccise; molti caddero colpiti a morte e i superstiti fuggirono.	11 When Judas learned of it, he went out to meet him and routed and kil ed him. Many fell wounded, andthe survivors took to flight.
12 Così si impadronirono delle loro spoglie e Giuda si riservò la spada di Apollonio e l'adoperò in guerra per tutto il tempo della sua vita.	12 Their spoils were seized and the sword of Apollonius was taken by Judas, who used it to fight withthroughout his life.

14 disse: "Mi farò un nome e mi coprirò di gloria nel regno combattendo Giuda e i suoi uomini che hanno disprezzato gli ordini del re".	14 Seron, commander of the Syrian troops, said, 'I shall make a name for myself and gain honour in thekingdom if I fight Judas and those supporters of his who are so contemptuous of the king's orders.'
15 Fece i preparativi e si unì a lui un forte gruppo di empi per aiutarlo a vendicarsi degli Israeliti.	15 He therefore launched another expedition, with a strong army of unbelievers to support him in takingrevenge on the Israelites.
16 Si spinse fino alla salita di Bet-Coròn e Giuda gli andò incontro con piccola schiera.	16 He had nearly reached the descent of Beth-Horon when Judas went out to confront him with a handfulof men.
17 Ma come videro lo schieramento avanzare contro di loro, dissero a Giuda: "Come faremo noi così pochi ad attaccar battaglia contro una moltitudine così forte? Oltre tutto, siamo rimasti oggi senza mangiare".	17 But as soon as these saw the force advancing to meet them, they said to Judas, 'How can we, few aswe are, engage such overwhelming numbers? We are exhausted as it is, not having had anything to eat today.'
18 Giuda rispose: "Non è impossibile che molti cadano in mano a pochi e non c'è differenza per il Cielo tra il salvare per mezzo di molti e il salvare per mezzo di pochi;	18 'It is easy', Judas answered, 'for a great number to be defeated by a few; indeed, in the sight ofHeaven, deliverance, whether by many or by few, is al one;
19 perché la vittoria in guerra non dipende dalla moltitudine delle forze, ma è dal Cielo che viene l'aiuto.	19 for victory in war does not depend on the size of the fighting force: Heaven accords the strength.
20 Costoro vengono contro di noi pieni d'insolenza e di empietà per eliminare noi, le nostre mogli e i nostri figli e saccheggiarci;	20 They are coming against us in ful -blown insolence and lawlessness to destroy us, our wives and ourchildren, and to plunder us;
21 noi combattiamo per la nostra vita e le nostre leggi.	21 but we are fighting for our lives and our laws,
22 Sarà lui a stritolarli davanti a noi. Voi dunque non temeteli".	22 and he will crush them before our eyes; do not be afraid of them.'
23 Quando ebbe finito di parlare, piombò su di loro all'improvviso e Seron con il suo schieramento fu sgominato davanti a lui;	23 When he had finished speaking, he made a sudden sal y against Seron and his force andoverwhelmed them.
24 lo inseguirono nella discesa di Bet-Coròn fino alla pianura. Di essi caddero circa ottocento uomini, gli altri fuggirono nella regione dei Filistei.	24 Judas pursued them down from Beth-Horon as far as the plain. About eight hundred of their men fel ,and the rest took refuge in the country of the Philistines.
25 Così cominciò a diffondersi il timore di Giuda e dei suoi fratelli e le genti intorno furon prese da terrore.	25 Judas and his brothers began to be feared, and alarm seized the surrounding peoples.
26 La fama di lui giunse fino al re e delle sue imprese militari parlavano le genti.	26 His name even reached the king's ears, and among the nations there was talk of Judas and hisbattles.
27 Quando il re Antioco seppe queste cose, si adirò furiosamente e diede ordine di radunare tutte le forze militari del suo regno: un esercito grande e potente.	27 The news of these events infuriated Antiochus, and he ordered mobilisation of al the forces in hiskingdom, a very powerful army.
28 Aprì l'erario e diede alle truppe il soldo per un anno, ordinando loro di star pronti per ogni evenienza.	28 Opening his treasury, he distributed a year's pay to his troops, telling them to be prepared for anyeventuality.
29 Ma si accorse che non bastavano le riserve del suo tesoro e che le entrate del paese erano poche a causa delle rivolte e delle rovine che aveva provocato nella regione per estirpare le tradizioni che erano in vigore dai tempi antichi;	29 He then found that the money in his coffers had run short and that the tribute of the province haddecreased, as a result of the dissension and disaster brought on the country by his own abrogation of laws thathad been in force from antiquity.

31 Allora si sentì grandemente angustiato e prese la decisione di invadere la Persia, per riscuotere i tributi di quelle province e ammassare molto denaro.	31 In this grave quandary he resolved to invade Persia, there to levy tribute on the provinces and soaccumulate substantial funds.
32 Lasciò Lisia, uomo illustre e di stirpe regia, alla direzione degli affari del re dall'Eufrate fino ai confini dell'Egitto	32 He therefore left Lysias, a nobleman and member of the royal family, to manage the royal affairsbetween the River Euphrates and the Egyptian frontier,
33 e con l'incarico di curare l'educazione del figlio Antioco fino al suo ritorno.	33 making him responsible for the education of his son Antiochus, until he should come back.

36 di trasferire degli stranieri su tutti i loro monti e di distribuire le loro terre.	36 to settle foreigners in al parts of their territory and to distribute their land into lots.
37 Il re poi prese l'altra metà dell'esercito e partì da Antiochia, la capitale del suo regno, nell'anno centoquarantasette; passò l'Eufrate e percorse le regioni settentrionali.	37 The king took the remaining half of his troops with him and set out from Antioch, the capital of hiskingdom, in the year 147; he crossed the River Euphrates and made his way through the Upper Provinces.
38 Allora Lisia scelse Tolomeo, figlio di Dorìmene, Nicànore e Gorgia, uomini potenti tra gli amici del re	38 Lysias chose Ptolemy son of Dorymenes, with Nicanor and Gorgias, influential men from among theFriends of the King,
39 e spedì ai loro ordini quarantamila uomini e settemila cavalli nel paese di Giuda per devastarlo secondo il comando del re.	39 and, under their command, despatched forty thousand foot and seven thousand horse to invade theland of Judah and devastate it, as the king had ordered.
40 Questi partirono con tutte le truppe e andarono ad accamparsi vicino ad Emmaus nella pianura.	40 The entire force set out and reached the neighbourhood of Emmaus in the lowlands, where theypitched camp.
41 I mercanti della regione ne ebbero notizia e si rifornirono molto di oro e di argento e di catene e vennero presso l'accampamento per acquistare come schiavi gli Israeliti. A quelle truppe si aggiunsero forze della Siria e di paesi stranieri.	41 The local merchants, hearing the news of this, arrived at the camp, bringing with them a large amountof gold and silver, and fetters as wel , proposing to buy the Israelites as slaves; they were accompanied by acompany from Idumaea and the Philistine country.
42 Giuda e i suoi fratelli videro che i mali si erano aggravati e che l'esercito era accampato nel loro territorio e vennero a conoscenza che il re aveva ordinato di attuare la distruzione totale del loro popolo.	42 Judas and his brothers saw that the situation was going from bad to worse and that armies werecamping in their territory; they were also well aware that the king had ordered the people's total destruction.
43 Allora si dissero l'un l'altro: "Facciamo risorgere il popolo dalla sua rovina e combattiamo per il nostro popolo e per i nostri luoghi santi".	43 So they said to each other, 'Let us restore the ruins of our people and fight for our people and oursanctuary.'
44 Si radunò l'assemblea per prepararsi alla battaglia e per pregare e chiedere pietà e misericordia.	44 The Assembly was summoned, to prepare for war, to offer prayer and to implore compassion andmercy.
45 Gerusalemme era disabitata come un deserto, nessuno dei suoi figli vi entrava o ne usciva, il santuario era calpestato, gli stranieri erano nella fortezza dell'Acra, soggiorno dei pagani. La gioia era sparita da Giacobbe, erano scomparsi il flauto e la cetra.	45 Jerusalem was as empty as a desert, none of her children to go in and out. The sanctuary wastrodden underfoot, men of an alien race held the Citadel, which had become a lodging for gentiles. There was nomore rejoicing for Jacob, the flute and lyre were mute.
46 Si radunarono dunque e vennero in Masfa di fronte a Gerusalemme, perché nei tempi antichi Masfa era stato luogo di preghiera in Israele.	46 After mustering, they made their way to Mizpah, opposite Jerusalem, since Mizpah was traditional y aplace of prayer for Israel.
47 In quel giorno digiunarono e si vestirono di sacco, si sparsero la cenere sul capo e si stracciarono le vesti.	47 That day they fasted and put on sackcloth, covering their heads with ashes and tearing theirgarments.
48 Aprirono il libro della legge per scoprirvi quanto i pagani cercavano di sapere dagli idoli dei loro dèi.	48 For the guidance that the gentiles would have sought from the images of their false gods, they openedthe Book of the Law.
49 Portarono le vesti sacerdotali, le primizie e le decime e fecero venire avanti i Nazirei, che avevano compiuto i giorni del loro voto,	49 They also brought out the priestly vestments, with first-fruits and tithes, and marshal ed the Naziriteswho had completed the period of their vow.
50 e alzarono la voce al cielo gridando: "Che faremo di costoro e dove li condurremo,	50 Then, raising their voices to Heaven, they cried, 'What shal we do with these people, and where arewe to take them?
51 mentre il tuo santuario è conculcato e profanato e i tuoi sacerdoti sono in lutto e desolazione?	51 Your holy place has been trampled underfoot and defiled, your priests mourn in their humiliation,
52 Ecco i pagani si sono alleati contro di noi per distruggerci; tu sai quello che vanno macchinando contro di noi.	52 and now the gentiles are in al iance to destroy us: you know what they have in mind for us.
53 Come potremo resistere di fronte a loro, se tu non ci aiuterai?".	53 How can we stand up and face them if you do not come to our aid?'
54 Diedero fiato alle trombe e gridarono a gran voce.	54 Then they sounded the trumpets and raised a great shout.
55 Dopo questo, Giuda stabilì i condottieri del popolo, i comandanti di mille, di cento, di cinquanta e di dieci uomini.	55 Next, Judas appointed leaders for the people, to command a thousand, a hundred, fifty or ten men.
56 Disse a coloro che costruivano case o che stavano per prendere moglie, a quelli che piantavano la vigna o che erano paurosi, di tornare a casa loro, secondo la legge.	56 Those who were in the middle of building a house, or were about to be married, or were planting avineyard, or were afraid, he told to go home again, as the Law al owed.
57 Poi levò il campo e si disposero a mezzogiorno di Emmaus.	57 The column then marched off and took up a position south of Emmaus.
58 Giuda ordinò: "Cingetevi e siate forti e state preparati per l'alba di domani a dar battaglia a questi stranieri che si sono alleati per distruggere noi e il nostro santuario.	58 'Stand to your arms,' Judas told them, 'acquit yourselves bravely, in the morning be ready to fightthese gentiles massed against us to destroy us and our sanctuary.
59 Del resto è meglio per noi morire in battaglia che vedere poi la rovina della nostra gente e del santuario.	59 Better for us to die in battle than to watch the ruin of our nation and our Holy Place.
60 Il Cielo farà succedere gli avvenimenti secondo quanto è stabilito lassù".	60 Whatever be the wil of Heaven, he wil perform it.'
