1 Fu riferito intanto ad Oloferne, comandante supremo dell'esercito di Assur, che gli Israeliti si preparavano alla guerra e avevano bloccato i passi montani, avevano fortificato tutte le sommità dei monti e avevano disposto ostacoli nelle pianure.	1 Holofernes, general-in-chief of the Assyrian army, received the intel igence that the Israelites werepreparing for war, that they had closed the mountain passes, fortified al the high peaks and laid obstructions inthe plains.
2 Egli montò in gran furore e convocò tutti i capi di Moab e gli strateghi di Ammon e tutti i satrapi delle regioni marittime,	2 Holofernes was furious. He summoned al the princes of Moab, al the generals of Ammon and al thesatraps of the coastal regions.
3 e disse loro: "Spiegatemi un po', voi figli di Canaan, che popolo è questo che dimora sui monti e come sono le città che egli abita, quanti sono gli effettivi del suo esercito, dove risiede la loro forza e il loro vigore, chi si è messo alla loro testa come re e condottiero del loro esercito	3 'Men of Canaan,' he said, 'tel me: what people is this that occupies the hill-country? What towns does itinhabit? How large is its army? What are the sources of its power and strength? Who is the king who rules it andcommands its army?
4 e perché hanno rifiutato di venire incontro a me a differenza di tutte le popolazioni dell'occidente".	4 Why have they disdained to wait on me, as all the western peoples have?'
5 Gli rispose Achior, condottiero di tutti gli Ammoniti: "Ascolti bene il mio signore la risposta dalle labbra del suo servo: io riferirò la verità sul conto di questo popolo, che sta su queste montagne vicino al luogo ove risiedi, né uscirà menzogna dalla bocca del suo servo.	5 Achior, leader of al the Ammonites, replied, 'May my lord be pleased to listen to what your servant isgoing to say. I shall give you the facts about these mountain folk whose home lies close to you. You wil hear nolie from the mouth of your servant.
6 Questo popolo si compone di discendenti dei Caldei.	6 These people are descended from the Chaldaeans.
7 Essi si trasferirono dapprima nella Mesopotamia, perché non vollero seguire gli dèi dei loro padri che si trovavano nel paese dei Caldei.	7 They once came to live in Mesopotamia, because they did not want to fol ow the gods of their ancestorswho lived in Chaldaea.
8 Essi avevano abbandonato la tradizione dei loro padri e avevano adorato il Dio del cielo, quel Dio che essi avevano conosciuto; perciò li avevano scacciati dalla presenza dei loro dèi ed essi si erano rifugiati in Mesopotamia e furono là per molto tempo.	8 They abandoned the way of their ancestors to worship the God of heaven, the God they learnt toacknowledge. Banished from the presence of their own gods, they fled to Mesopotamia where they lived for along time.
9 Ma il loro Dio comandò loro di uscire dal paese che li ospitava e venire nel paese di Canaan. Qui infatti si stabilirono e si arricchirono di oro e di argento e di bestiame in gran numero.	9 When God told them to leave their home and set out for Canaan, they settled there and accumulatedgold and silver and great herds of cattle.
10 Poi scesero in Egitto, perché la fame aveva invaso tutto il paese di Canaan, e vi rimasero come stranieri finché trovarono da vivere. Là divennero anche una moltitudine imponente, tanto che non si poteva contare la loro discendenza.	10 Next, famine having overwhelmed the land of Canaan, they went down to Egypt where they stayed tilthey were well nourished. There they became a great multitude, a race beyond counting.
11 Ma si alzò contro di loro il re dell'Egitto che li sfruttò nella preparazione dei mattoni e perciò furono umiliati e trattati come schiavi.	11 But the king of Egypt turned against them and exploited them by forcing them to make bricks; hedegraded them, reducing them to slavery.
12 Essi alzarono suppliche al loro Dio e questi percosse tutto il paese d'Egitto con castighi ai quali non c'era rimedio. Perciò gli Egiziani li mandarono via dal loro paese.	12 They cried to their God, who struck the entire land of Egypt with incurable plagues, and the Egyptiansexpel ed them.
13 Dio asciugò il Mare Rosso davanti a loro	13 God dried up the Red Sea before them
14 e li guidò per la via del Sinai e di Cadesbarne; essi eliminarono quanti risiedevano nel deserto.	14 and led them forward by way of Sinai and Kadesh-Barnea. Having driven off all the inhabitants of thedesert,
15 Poi dimorarono nel paese degli Amorrei e sterminarono con la loro forza gli abitanti di Esebon; quindi passarono il Giordano e si insediarono in tutte quelle montagne.	15 they settled in the land of the Amorites and in their strength exterminated the entire population ofHeshbon. Then, having crossed the Jordan, they took possession of al the hil -country,
16 Scacciarono davanti a loro il Cananeo, il Perizzita, il Gebuseo, Sichem e tutti i Gergesei e abitarono nel loro territorio per molti anni.	16 driving out the Canaanites before them and the Perizzites, Jebusites, Shechemites and all theGirgashites, and lived there for many years.
17 In realtà fin quando non peccavano contro il loro Dio erano nella prosperità, perché il Dio che è con loro odia il male.	17 Al the while they did not sin before their God, prosperity was theirs, for they have a God who hateswickedness.
18 Quando invece si allontanarono dagli ordinamenti che egli aveva loro imposti, furono terribilmente sconfitti in molte guerre e condotti prigionieri in paese straniero, il tempio del loro Dio fu raso al suolo e le loro città caddero in potere dei loro nemici.	18 But when they turned from the path he had marked out for them some were exterminated in a series ofbattles, others were taken captive to a foreign land. The Temple of their God was rased to the ground and theirtowns were seized by their enemies.
19 Ora appunto, riconciliati con il loro Dio, hanno fatto ritorno dai luoghi dove erano stati dispersi, hanno ripreso possesso di Gerusalemme, dove è il loro santuario, e si sono stabiliti sulle montagne, che prima erano deserte.	19 Then having turned once again to their God, they came back from the places to which they had beendispersed and scattered, regained possession of Jerusalem, where they have their Temple, and reoccupied thehil -country which had been left deserted.
20 Ora, mio sovrano e signore, se vi è qualche aberrazione in questo popolo perché ha peccato contro il suo Dio, se cioè ci accorgiamo che c'è in mezzo a loro questo inciampo, avanziamo e diamo loro battaglia.	20 So, now, master and lord, if this people has committed any fault, if they have sinned against their God,let us first be sure that they real y have this reason to fail, then advance and attack them.
21 Se invece non c'è alcuna trasgressione nella loro gente, il mio signore passi oltre, perché il Signore, che è il loro Dio, non si faccia loro scudo e noi diveniamo oggetto di scherno davanti a tutta la terra".	21 But if their nation is guiltless, my lord would do better to abstain, for fear that their Lord and God shouldprotect them. We should then become the laughing-stock of the whole world.'
22 Ecco, appena Achior cessò di pronunziare queste parole, tutta la turba che circondava la tenda e stazionava intorno, alzò un mormorio, mentre gli ufficiali di Oloferne e tutti gli abitanti della costa e i Moabiti proponevano di ucciderlo.	22 When Achior had ended this speech, all the people crowding round the tent began protesting.Holofernes' own senior officers, as wel as al the coastal peoples and the Moabites, threatened to tear him limbfrom limb.
23 "Non avremo certo paura degli Israeliti, dicevano; vedete che è un popolo nel quale non ci sono esercito né forze armate per un valido schieramento.	23 'Why should we be afraid of the Israelites? They are a weak and powerless people, quite unable tostand a stiff attack.
24 Dunque avanziamo presto e saranno pascolo di tutto il tuo esercito, o sovrano Oloferne".	24 Forward! Advance! Your army, Holofernes our master, wil swal ow them in one mouthful!'
