1 Ioab figlio di Zeruià si accorse che il cuore del re era contro Assalonne.	1 Now, Joab son of Zeruiah observed that the king was favourably inclined to Absalom.
2 Allora mandò a chiamare a Tekòa e fece venire una donna saggia e le disse: "Fingi di essere in lutto: mettiti una veste da lutto, non ti ungere con olio e compòrtati da donna che pianga da molto tempo un morto;	2 Joab therefore sent to Tekoa for a wise woman. 'Pretend to be in mourning,' he said. 'Dress yourself inmourning, do not perfume yourself; act like a woman who has long been mourning for the dead.
3 poi entra presso il re e parlagli così e così". Ioab le mise in bocca le parole da dire.	3 Then go to the king and say this to him.' And Joab put the words into her mouth which she was to say.
4 La donna di Tekòa andò dunque dal re, si gettò con la faccia a terra, si prostrò e disse: "Aiuto, o re!".	4 So the woman of Tekoa went to the king and, fal ing on her face to the ground, prostrated herself.'Help, my lord king!' she said.
5 Il re le disse: "Che hai?". Rispose: "Ahimè! Io sono una vedova; mio marito è morto.	5 The king said, 'What is the matter?' 'As you see,' she replied, 'I am a widow; my husband is dead.
6 La tua schiava aveva due figli, ma i due vennero tra di loro a contesa in campagna e nessuno li separava; così uno colpì l'altro e l'uccise.	6 Your servant had two sons and out in the fields, where there was no one to intervene, they had aquarrel. And one of them struck the other one and kil ed him.
7 Ed ecco tutta la famiglia è insorta contro la tua schiava dicendo: consegnaci l'uccisore del fratello, perché lo facciamo morire per vendicare il fratello che egli ha ucciso. Elimineranno così anche l'erede e spegneranno l'ultima bracia che mi è rimasta e non lasceranno a mio marito né nome, né discendenza sulla terra".	7 And now the whole clan has risen against your servant. "Give up the man who kil ed his brother," theysay, "so that we can put him to death, to atone for the life of the brother whom he has murdered; and thus weshall destroy the heir as wel ." By this means, they wil extinguish the ember stil left to me, leaving my husbandneither name nor survivor on the face of the earth.'
8 Il re disse alla donna: "Va' pure a casa: io darò ordini a tuo riguardo".	8 Then the king said to the woman, 'Go home; I myself shal give orders about your case.'
9 La donna di Tekòa disse al re: "Re mio signore, la colpa cada su di me e sulla casa di mio padre, ma il re e il suo trono sono innocenti".	9 The woman of Tekoa said to the king, 'My lord king! May the guilt be on me and on my family; the kingand his throne are innocent of it.'
10 E il re: "Se qualcuno parla contro di te, conducilo da me e vedrai che non ti molesterà più".	10 'Bring me the man who threatened you,' the king replied, 'and he shal never hurt you again.'
11 Riprese: "Il re pronunzi il nome del Signore suo Dio perché il vendicatore del sangue non aumenti la disgrazia e non mi sopprimano il figlio". Egli rispose: "Per la vita del Signore, non cadrà a terra un capello di tuo figlio!".	11 She then said, 'Let the king be pleased to pronounce the name of Yahweh your God, so that theavenger of blood may not do greater harm and destroy my son.' 'As Yahweh lives,' he said, 'not one of yourson's hairs shal fal to the ground!'
12 Allora la donna disse: "La tua schiava possa dire una parola al re mio signore!". Egli rispose: "Parla".	12 Then the woman said, 'Permit your servant to say something else to my lord the king.' 'Go on,' hesaid.
13 Riprese la donna: "Allora perché pensi così contro il popolo di Dio? Intanto il re, pronunziando questa sentenza si è come dichiarato colpevole, per il fatto che il re non fa ritornare colui che ha bandito.	13 The woman said, 'Why then has the king, who by giving this verdict has condemned himself,conceived the idea, against God's people's interests, of not bringing home the son whom he has banished?
14 Noi dobbiamo morire e siamo come acqua versata in terra, che non si può più raccogliere, e Dio non ridà la vita. Il re pensi qualche piano perché il proscritto non sia più bandito lontano da lui.	14 We are al mortal; we are like water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again, nor doesGod raise up a corpse; let the king therefore make plans for his banished son not to remain far away from him inexile.
15 Ora, se io sono venuta a parlare così al re mio signore, è perché la gente mi ha fatto paura e la tua schiava ha detto: Voglio parlare al re; forse il re farà quanto gli dirà la sua schiava;	15 'Now, the reason why I came to speak about this to my lord the king is that I was being intimidated,and your servant thought, "I shal speak to the king; perhaps the king will do what his servant asks.
16 il re ascolterà la sua schiava e la libererà dalle mani di quelli che cercano di sopprimere me e mio figlio dalla eredità di Dio".	16 Surely the king wil consent to save his servant from the clutches of the man who is trying to cut bothme and my son off from God's heritage.
17 La donna concluse: "La parola del re mio signore conceda la calma. Perché il re mio signore è come un angelo di Dio per distinguere il bene e il male. Il Signore tuo Dio sia con te!".	17 Let a word from my lord the king, restore the peace!" your servant thought, "for my lord the king islike the Angel of God in understanding good and evil." May Yahweh your God be with you!'
18 Il re rispose e disse alla donna: "Non tenermi nascosto nulla di quello che io ti domanderò". La donna disse: "Parli pure il re mio signore".	18 Replying to the woman, the king said, 'Now do not evade the question which I am going to ask you.'The woman said, 'Let my lord the king ask his question.'
19 Disse il re: "La mano di Ioab non è forse con te in tutto questo?". La donna rispose: "Per la tua vita, o re mio signore, non si può andare né a destra né a sinistra di quanto ha detto il re mio signore! Proprio il tuo servo Ioab mi ha dato questi ordini e ha messo tutte queste parole in bocca alla tua schiava.	19 'Is not Joab's hand behind you in all this?' the king asked. The woman replied, 'As you live, my lordking, I cannot escape what my lord the king says, either to right or to left. Yes, it was your servant Joab whogave me my orders; he put al these words into your servant's mouth.
20 Per dare alla cosa un'altra faccia, il tuo servo Ioab ha agito così; ma il mio signore ha la saggezza di un angelo di Dio e sa quanto avviene sulla terra".	20 Your servant Joab did this to approach the matter indirectly, but my lord has the wisdom of the Angelof God; he knows everything that happens on earth!'
21 Allora il re disse a Ioab: "Ecco, voglio fare quello che hai chiesto; va' dunque e fa' tornare il giovane Assalonne".	21 The king then said to Joab, 'Very wel , the suit is granted. Go and bring the young man Absalomback.'
22 Ioab si gettò con la faccia a terra, si prostrò, benedisse il re e disse: "Oggi il tuo servo sa di aver trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, re mio signore, poiché il re ha fatto quello che il suo servo gli ha chiesto".	22 Joab fell on his face to the ground, prostrated himself and blessed the king. 'My lord king,' Joab said,'today your servant knows that he has won your favour, since the king has done what his servant asked.'
23 Ioab dunque si alzò, andò a Ghesùr e condusse Assalonne a Gerusalemme.	23 Joab then set off, went to Geshur, and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem.
24 Ma il re disse: "Si ritiri in casa e non veda la mia faccia". Così Assalonne si ritirò in casa e non vide la faccia del re.	24 The king, however, said, 'Let him retire to his own house; he is not to appear in my presence.' SoAbsalom retired to his own house and was not received by the king.
25 Ora in tutto Israele non vi era uomo che fosse tanto lodato per la sua bellezza quanto Assalonne; dalle piante dei piedi alla cima del capo, non vi era in lui un difetto alcuno.	25 In al Israel there was no one more praised for his beauty than Absalom; from the sole of his foot tothe crown of his head, he could not be faulted.
26 Quando si faceva tagliare i capelli, e se li faceva tagliare ogni anno perché la capigliatura gli pesava troppo, egli pesava i suoi capelli e il peso era di duecento sicli a peso del re.	26 When he cut his hair -- he shaved it once a year because his hair got too heavy -- he would weighthe hair: two hundred shekels, king's weight.
27 Ad Assalonne nacquero tre figli e una figlia chiamata Tamàr, che era donna di bell'aspetto.	27 To Absalom were born three sons and one daughter called Tamar; she was a beautiful woman.
28 Assalonne abitò in Gerusalemme due anni, senza vedere la faccia del re.	28 Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years without being received by the king.
29 Poi Assalonne convocò Ioab per mandarlo dal re; ma egli non volle andare da lui; lo convocò una seconda volta, ma Ioab non volle andare.	29 Absalom then summoned Joab, intending to send him to the king, but Joab would not come to him.He sent for him a second time, but still he would not come.
30 Allora Assalonne disse ai suoi servi: "Vedete, il campo di Ioab è vicino al mio e vi è l'orzo; andate ed appiccatevi il fuoco!". I servi di Assalonne appiccarono il fuoco al campo.	30 At this, Absalom said to his retainers, 'Look, Joab's field is next to mine and he has barley in it; goand set it on fire.' Absalom's retainers set fire to the field.
31 Allora Ioab si alzò, andò a casa di Assalonne e gli disse: "Perché i tuoi servi hanno dato fuoco al mio campo?".	31 Joab then stirred himself, went to Absalom in his house and asked, 'Why have your retainers set myfield on fire?'
32 Assalonne rispose a Ioab: "Io ti avevo mandato a dire: Vieni qui, voglio mandarti a dire al re: Perché sono tornato da Ghesùr? Sarebbe meglio per me se fossi rimasto là. Ora voglio vedere la faccia del re e, se vi è in me colpa, mi faccia morire!".	32 Absalom replied to Joab, 'Look, I sent word to you: Come here, so that I can send you to the king tosay, "Why come back from Geshur? Better for me to have been there still!" Now I want to be received by theking, and if I am guilty, let him put me to death!'
33 Ioab allora andò dal re e gli riferì la cosa. Il re fece chiamare Assalonne, il quale venne e si prostrò con la faccia a terra davanti a lui; il re baciò Assalonne.	33 Joab went to the king and told him this. He then summoned Absalom, who prostrated himself with hisface to the ground before the king. And the king kissed Absalom.
