| 3 La richesse est inutile à l'homme cupide et avare (tenace) ; et de quoi sert l'or à l'envieux ? | 3 Riches are not comely for a covetous man and a niggard, and what should an envious man do with gold? |
| 4 Celui qui amasse injustement à ses propres dépens accumule pour d'autres, et c'est un étranger qui dissipera ses biens en débauches. | 4 He that gathereth together by wronging his own soul, gathereth for others, and another will squander away his goods in rioting. |
| 5 Pour qui sera bon celui qui est méchant pour lui-même ? Il ne jouit (jouira) pas même de ses biens. | 5 He that is evil to himself, to whom will he be good? and he shall not take pleasure in his goods. |
| 6 Rien n'est pire que celui qui se porte envie à lui-même, et c'est là le châtiment (la peine) de sa malice. | 6 There is none worse than he that envieth himself, and this is the reward of his wickedness: |
| 7 S'il fait du bien, c'est sans le savoir et malgré lui, et à la fin il manifeste sa malignité (malice). | 7 And if he do good, he doth it ignorantly, and unwillingly: and at the last he discovereth his wickedness. |
| 8 L'œil de l'envieux est méchant ; il détourne son visage et méprise son âme. | 8 The eye of the envious is wicked: and he turneth away his face, and despiseth his own soul. |
| 9 L'œil de l'avare (du cupide) n'est pas rassasié de sa part d'iniquité (insatiable) ; il ne sera pas satisfait jusqu'à ce qu'il ait desséché et consumé son âme. | 9 The eye of the covetous man is insatiable in his portion of iniquity: he will not be satisfied till he consume his own soul, drying it up. |
| 10 L'œil mauvais tend au mal, et ne se rassasie pas de pain ; mais il est (sera) affamé et triste à sa propre table. | 10 An evil eye is towards evil things: and he shall not have his fill of bread, but shall be needy and pensive at his own table. |
| 11 Mon fils, si tu possèdes, fais-toi du bien à toi-même, et offre à Dieu de dignes offrandes. | 11 My son, if thou have any thing, do good to thyself, and offer to God worthy offerings. |
| 12 Souviens-toi que la mort ne tarde pas, et que l'arrêt du sombre séjour (testament des enfers, note) t'a été signifié. Car c'est l'arrêt (le testament, note) de ce monde : Il faut mourir. | 12 Remember that death is not slow, and that the covenant of hell hath been shewn to thee: for the covenant of this world shall surely die. |
| 13 Avant ta mort fais du bien à ton ami, et selon tes moyens tends la main et donne au pauvre. | 13 Do good to thy friend before thou die, and according to thy ability, stretching out thy hand give to the poor. |
| 14 Ne te prive pas du (d'un) jour heureux (avantageux), et ne laisse perdre aucune parcelle de cet excellent don. | 14 Defraud not thyself of the good day, and let not the part of a good gift overpass thee. |
| 15 Ne laisseras-tu pas à d'autres les fruits de tes peines et de tes travaux, pour qu'ils les partagent entre eux (dans le partage du sort, note) ? | 15 Shalt thou not leave to others to divide by lot thy sorrows and labours? |
| 16 Donne et reçois, et sanctifie (justifie) ton âme. | 16 Give and take, and justify thy soul. |
| 17 Avant ta mort, pratique la justice, parce qu'on ne trouve pas d'aliments dans le séjour des morts (aux enfers). | 17 Before thy death work justice: for in hell there is no finding food. |
| 18 Toute chair se flétrit comme l'herbe, et comme les feuilles qui croissent sur les arbres verts. | 18 All flesh shall fade as grass, and as the leaf that springeth out on a green tree. |
| 19 Les unes naissent, et les autres tombent (sont renversées) ; ainsi en est-il des générations de chair et de sang : l'une meurt, et l'autre naît. | 19 Some grow, and some fall off: so is the generation of flesh and blood, one cometh to an end, and another is born. |
| 20 Toute œuvre corruptible sera finalement détruite, et celui qui l'a faite s'en ira avec elle. | 20 Every work that is corruptible shall fail in the end: and the worker thereof shall go with it. |
| 21 Toute œuvre excellente sera louée (justifiée), et celui qui l'a faite y trouvera sa gloire. | 21 And every excellent work shall be justified: and the worker thereof shall be honoured therein. |
| 22 (Bien)Heureux l'homme qui demeure(ra) appliqué à la sagesse, et qui médite(ra) sur sa justice, et qui réfléchit (pensera) dans sa pensée au regard (examinateur) de Dieu ; | 22 Blessed is the man that shall continue in wisdom, and that shall meditate in his justice, and in his mind shall think of the all seeing eye of God. |
| 23 qui repasse dans son cœur les voies de la sagesse (recherche ses voies en son propre cœur), et qui comprend (pénètre) ses secrets, qui va après elle comme suivant ses traces (un investigateur), et qui se tient sur son chemin (s'arrêtant dans ses voies) ; | 23 He that considereth her ways in his heart, and hath understanding in her secrets, who goeth after her as one that traceth, and stayeth in her ways: |
| 24 qui regarde par ses fenêtres, et qui écoute à sa porte ; | 24 He who looketh in at her windows, and hearkeneth at her door: |
| 25 qui s'établit auprès de sa maison, et qui, enfonçant un pieu dans ses murailles, fixe(ra) sa tente (cabane) auprès d'elle, et le bonheur habitera à jamais dans sa tente (cabane). | 25 He that lodgeth near her house, and fastening a pin in her walls shall set up his tent nigh unto her, where good things shall rest in his lodging for ever. |
| 26 Il établira ses fils sous son ombre, et il demeurera sous ses branches. | 26 He shall set his children under her shelter, and shall lodge under her branches: |
| 27 A son ombre il sera garanti de la chaleur, et il se reposera dans sa gloire. | 27 He shall be protected under her covering from the heat, and shall rest in her glory. |
