Y además estamos agotados, porque no hemos comido en todo el día». | 17 But when they saw the army coming against them, they said to Judas: "How can we, few as we are, fight such a mighty host as this? Besides, we are weak today from fasting." |
| 18 Judas respondió: «Es fácil que muchos caigan en manos de pocos, pues al Cielo lo mismo le cuesta salvar con muchos que con pocos; | 18 But Judas said: "It is easy for many to be overcome by a few; in the sight of Heaven there is no difference between deliverance by many or by few; |
| 19 la victoria no depende del número de soldados, pues la fuerza llega del cielo. | 19 for victory in war does not depend upon the size of the army, but on strength that comes from Heaven. |
| 20 Ellos vienen a atacarnos llenos de insolencia e impiedad, para aniquilarnos y saquearnos a nosotros, a nuestras mujeres y a nuestros hijos, | 20 With great presumption and lawlessness they come against us to destroy us and our wives and children and to despoil us; |
| 21 mientras que nosotros luchamos por nuestra vida y nuestra religión. | 21 but we are fighting for our lives and our laws. |
| 22 El Señor los aplastará ante nosotros. No les temáis». | 22 He himself will crush them before us; so do not be afraid of them." |
| 23 Nada más terminar de hablar, se lanzó contra ellos de repente. Derrotaron a Serón y su ejército, | 23 When he finished speaking, he rushed suddenly upon Seron and his army, who were crushed before him. |

| 27 Cuando el rey Antíoco se enteró, montó en cólera y mandó juntar todas las fuerzas de su reino, un ejército poderosísimo. | 27 When Antiochus heard about these events, he was angry; so he ordered a muster of all the forces of his kingdom, a very strong army. |

| 29 Pero advirtió que se le acababa el dinero del tesoro y que los tributos de la región eran escasos, debido a las revueltas y calamidades que él había provocado en el país al suprimir las leyes que estaban en vigor desde los primeros tiempos. | 29 He then found that this exhausted the money in his treasury; moreover the income from the province was small, because of the dissension and distress he had brought upon the land by abolishing the laws which had been in effect from of old. |

Atravesó el río Éufrates y prosiguió su marcha a través de las provincias del Norte. | 37 The king took the remaining half of the army and set out from Antioch, his capital, in the year one hundred and forty-seven; he crossed the Euphrates River and advanced inland. |

| 41 Cuando los mercaderes de la región oyeron hablar de ellos, tomaron grandes sumas de plata y oro, además de cadenas, y se fueron al campamento para adquirir como esclavos a los hijos de Israel. Al ejército se les unieron también tropas de Idumea y de la tierra de los filisteos. | 41 When the merchants of the country heard of their fame, they came to the camp, bringing fetters and a large sum of silver and gold, to buy the Israelites as slaves. A force from Idumea and from Philistia joined with them. |
| 42 Judas y sus hermanos comprendieron que la situación era grave: el ejército estaba acampado en su territorio y conocían la consigna del rey de destruir el pueblo y acabar con él. | 42 Judas and his brothers saw that the situation had become critical now that armies were encamped within their territory; they knew of the orders which the king had given to destroy and utterly wipe out the people. |
| 43 Y se dijeron unos a otros: «Reparemos la ruina de nuestro pueblo y luchemos por nuestro pueblo y por el santuario». | 43 So they said to one another, "Let us restore our people from their ruined estate, and fight for our people and our sanctuary!" |

The sanctuary was trampled on, and foreigners were in the citadel; it was a habitation of Gentiles. Joy had disappeared from Jacob, and the flute and the harp were silent. |

| 51 Tu santuario está pisoteado y profanado, tus sacerdotes tristes y humillados; | 51 For your sanctuary has been trampled on and profaned, and your priests are in mourning and humiliation. |
| 52 ya ves, los gentiles se han reunido contra nosotros para aniquilarnos. Tú conoces lo que traman contra nosotros. | 52 Now the Gentiles are gathered together against us to destroy us. You know what they plot against us. |
| 53 ¿Cómo podremos resistirles, si tú no nos auxilias?». | 53 How shall we be able to resist them unless you help us?" |
| 54 Hicieron sonar las trompetas y lanzaron el alarido. | 54 Then they blew the trumpets and cried out loudly. |
| 55 A continuación, Judas nombró jefes del pueblo: jefes de mil hombres, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez. | 55 After this Judas appointed officers among the people, over thousands, over hundreds, over fifties, and over tens. |

| 59 Más vale morir en la batalla que quedarnos mirando las desgracias de nuestra nación y del santuario. | 59 It is better for us to die in battle than to witness the ruin of our nation and our sanctuary. Whatever Heaven wills, he will do." |
