| 1 Cuando Simón se enteró de que Trifón había reunido un ejército numeroso para ir a devastar la tierra de Judá, | 1 Now Simon heard that Tryphon was gathering together a very great army, to invade the land of Juda, and to destroy it. |
| 2 viendo al pueblo espantado y temeroso, subió a Jerusalén, congregó al pueblo | 2 And seeing that the people was in dread, and in fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and assembled the people: |
| 3 y le arengó diciendo: «Vosotros sabéis todo lo que hemos hecho mis hermanos, la familia de mi padre y yo por la ley y el santuario, y las guerras y dificultades que hemos sufrido. | 3 And exhorted them, saying: You know what great battles I and my brethren, and the house of my father, have fought for the laws, and the sanctuary, and the distresses that we have seen: |
| 4 Por ello, todos mis hermanos han muerto por Israel y he quedado yo solo. | 4 By reason whereof all my brethren have lost their lives for Israel's sake, and I am left alone. |
| 5 Pero lejos de mí escatimar ahora mi vida en momentos de peligro, pues yo no soy mejor que mis hermanos; | 5 And now far be it from me to spare my life in any time of trouble: for I am not better than my brethren. |
| 6 por el contrario, vengaré a mi nación, el Lugar Santo y a vuestras mujeres e hijos, ya que, movidas por el odio, se han unido todas las naciones para aniquilarnos». | 6 I will avenge then my nation and the sanctuary, and our children, and wives: for all the heathens are gathered together to destroy us out of mere malice. |
| 7 Al oír estas palabras, se enardeció el espíritu del pueblo | 7 And the spirit of the people was enkindled as soon as they heard these words. |
| 8 y respondió aclamándolo: «Tú eres nuestro caudillo después de Judas y de tu hermano Jonatán. | 8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying: Thou art our leader in the place of Judas, and Jonathan thy brother. |
| 9 Dirígenos en la guerra y haremos cuanto nos mandes». | 9 Fight thou our battles, and we will do whatsoever thou shalt say to us. |
| 10 Simón reunió entonces a todos los hombres aptos para la guerra y se dio prisa en acabar las murallas de Jerusalén hasta que la fortificó en todo su contorno. | 10 So gathering together all the men of war, he made haste to finish all the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about. |
| 11 A Jonatán, hijo de Absalón, lo envió a Jafa con un importante destacamento; él expulsó a los que estaban en la ciudad y se estableció en ella. | 11 And he sent Jonathan the son of Absalom, and with him a new army into Joppe, and he cast out them that were in it, and himself remained there. |
| 12 Trifón partió de Tolemaida con un ejército numeroso para entrar en la tierra de Judá, llevando consigo prisionero a Jonatán. | 12 And Tryphon removed from Ptolemais with a great army, to invade the land of Juda, and Jonathan was with him in custody. |
| 13 Simón puso su campamento en Adidá, frente a la llanura. | 13 But Simon pitched in Addus, over against the plain. |
| 14 Al enterarse Trifón de que Simón había reemplazado a su hermano Jonatán y que estaba preparado para entrar en combate contra él, le envió mensajeros diciéndole: | 14 And when Tryphon understood that Simon was risen up in the place of his brother Jonathan, and that he meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers to him, |
| 15 «Tenemos detenido a tu hermano Jonatán a causa de las deudas contraídas con el tesoro real en el desempeño de sus cargos. | 15 Saying: We have detained thy brother Jonathan for the money that he owed in the king's account, by reason of the affairs which he had the management of. |
| 16 Envíanos tres mil kilos de plata y a dos de sus hijos como rehenes, no sea que, una vez libre, se rebele contra nosotros. Entonces lo soltaremos». | 16 But now send a hundred talents of silver, and his two sons for hostages, that when he is set at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will release him. |
| 17 Simón, aunque se dio cuenta de que trataban de engañarlo, envió a buscar el dinero y a los niños, para no provocar contra sí mismo la enemistad del pueblo, que podría comentar: | 17 Now Simon knew that he spoke deceitfully to him, nevertheless he ordered the money, and the children to be sent: lest he should bring upon himself a great hatred of the people of Israel, who might have said: |
| 18 «Porque no envié yo el dinero y los niños, ha muerto Jonatán». | 18 Because he sent not the money, and the children, therefore is he lost. |
| 19 Envió, pues, a los niños y los tres mil kilos de plata, pero Trifón faltó a su palabra y no soltó a Jonatán. | 19 So he sent the children, and the hundred talents: and he lied, and did not let Jonathan go. |
| 20 Después de esto, Trifón se puso en marcha para invadir la región y devastarla. Dio un rodeo por el camino de Adorá, mientras Simón y su ejército obstaculizaban su marcha por doquier. | 20 And after this Tryphon entered within the country, to destroy it: and they went about by the way that leadeth to Ador: and Simon and his army marched to every place whithersoever they went. |
| 21 Los de la acrópolis enviaron legados a Trifón apremiándole para que fuera a través del desierto adonde estaban ellos y les enviara víveres. | 21 And they that were in the castle, sent messengers to Tryphon, that he should make haste to come through the desert, and sent them victuals. |
| 22 Trifón preparó toda su caballería para ir, pero aquella noche cayó tal cantidad de nieve que le impidió acudir. Partió de allí y se fue hacia Galilea. | 22 And Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, and he came not into the country of Galaad. |
| 23 Cuando se encontraba cerca de Bascamá, hizo matar a Jonatán, quien fue enterrado allí. | 23 And when he approached to Bascama, he slew Jonathan and his sons there. |
| 24 Luego Trifón regresó a su país. | 24 And Tryphon returned, and went into his own country. |
| 25 Simón envió a recoger los restos mortales de su hermano Jonatán y le dio sepultura en Modín, ciudad de sus padres. | 25 And Simon sent, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, in the city of his fathers. |
| 26 Todo Israel hizo solemnes funerales por él y lo lloró durante muchos días. | 26 And all Israel bewailed him with great lamentation: and they mourned for him many days. |
| 27 Simón construyó sobre el sepulcro de su padre y sus hermanos un mausoleo alto, que pudiera verse, de piedras pulidas por delante y por detrás. | 27 And Simon built over the sepulchre of his father and of his brethren, a building lofty to the sight, of polished stone behind and before: |
| 28 Levantó siete pirámides, una frente a otra, dedicadas a su padre, a su madre y a sus cuatro hermanos. | 28 And he set up seven pyramids one against another for his father and his mother, and his four brethren: |
| 29 Levantó, alrededor de ellas, grandes columnas y sobre las columnas colocó panoplias como recuerdo permanente. Al lado de las panoplias esculpió unas naves que pudieran ser contempladas por todos los navegantes. | 29 And round about these he set great pillars: and upon the pillars arms for a perpetual memory: and by the arms ships carved, which might be seen by all that sailed on the sea. |
| 30 Tal fue el mausoleo que construyó en Modín y que subsiste en nuestros días. | 30 This is the sepulchre that he made in Modin even unto this day. |
| 31 Trifón conspiró contra el joven rey Antíoco y le dio muerte. | 31 But Tryphon when he was upon a journey with the young king Antiochus, treacherously slew him. |
| 32 Ocupó el trono en su lugar, se ciñó la corona de Asia y causó grandes estragos en el país. | 32 And he reigned in his place, and put on the crown of Asia: and brought great evils upon the land. |
| 33 Simón, por su parte, reconstruyó las fortalezas de Judea, las rodeó de altas torres y grandes murallas con puertas y cerrojos, y almacenó víveres en ellas. | 33 And Simon built up the strong holds of Judea, fortifying them with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars: and he stored up victuals in the fortresses. |
| 34 Además, Simón escogió algunos hombres que envió al rey Demetrio intentando conseguir una remisión de deudas para la región, dado que toda la actividad de Trifón había sido un continuo robo. | 34 And Simon chose men and sent to king Demetrius, to the end that he should grant an immunity to the land: for all that Tryphon did was to spoil. |
| 35 El rey Demetrio contestó a su petición y le escribió la siguiente carta: | 35 And king Demetrius in answer to this request, wrote a letter in this manner: |
| 36 «El rey Demetrio saluda a Simón, sumo sacerdote y Amigo de reyes, a los ancianos y a la nación judía. | 36 King Demetrius to Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, and to the ancients, and to the nation of the Jews, greeting. |
| 37 Hemos recibido la corona de oro y la palma que nos habéis enviado, y estamos dispuestos a concertar con vosotros una paz completa y a escribir a los funcionarios que os concedan la remisión de las deudas. | 37 The golden crown, and the palm, which you sent, we have received: and we are ready to make a firm peace with you, and to write to the king's chief officers to release you the things that we have released. |
| 38 Cuanto hemos decidido sobre vosotros quede firme y sean vuestras las fortalezas que habéis construido. | 38 For all that we have decreed in your favour, shall stand in force. The strong holds that you have built, shall be your own. |
| 39 Os perdonamos los errores y delitos cometidos hasta el día de hoy, y la corona que nos debéis. Si algún otro tributo se percibía en Jerusalén, ya no se exija. | 39 And as for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown which you owed: and if any other thing were taxed in Jerusalem, now let it not be taxed. |
| 40 Y si algunos de vosotros son aptos para alistarse en nuestra guardia, que lo haga, y haya paz entre nosotros». | 40 And if any of you be fit to be enrolled among ours, let them be enrolled, and let there be peace between us. |
| 41 El año ciento setenta Israel quedó libre del yugo de las naciones | 41 In the year one hundred and seventy the yoke of the Gentiles was taken off from Israel. |
| 42 y el pueblo comenzó a escribir en las actas y contratos: «En el año primero de Simón, gran sumo sacerdote, estratega y caudillo de los judíos». | 42 And the people of Israel began to write in the instruments, and public records, The first year under Simon the high priest, the great captain and prince of the Jews. |
| 43 Por aquellos días Simón acampó junto a Guézer y la cercó con sus tropas. Construyó una torre móvil de asalto que aproximó a la ciudad y, abriendo brecha en un baluarte, lo ocupó. | 43 In those days Simon besieged Gaza, and camped round about it, and he made engines, and set them to the city, and he struck one tower, and took it. |
| 44 Saltaron los de la torre móvil a la ciudad y se produjo en ella gran agitación. | 44 And they that were within the engine leaped into the city: and there was a great uproar in the city. |
| 45 Los habitantes subieron a la muralla con sus mujeres e hijos y, rasgándose las vestiduras, pidieron la paz a Simón a grandes gritos. | 45 And they that were in the city went up with their wives and children upon the wall, with their garments rent, and they cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace. |
| 46 «No nos trates —le decían— según nuestras maldades, sino según tu misericordia». | 46 And they said: Deal not with us according to our evil deeds, but according to thy mercy. |
| 47 Simón accedió y suspendió el ataque, pero los echó de la ciudad y mandó purificar las casas en que había ídolos. Entonces hizo su entrada en la ciudad con himnos de alabanza y de acción de gracias. | 47 And Simon being moved, did not destroy them: but yet he cast them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein there had been idols, and then he entered into it with hymns, blessing the Lord. |
| 48 Echó de la ciudad todo lo que la profanaba, instaló en ella gentes observantes de la ley, fortificó Guézer y se construyó allí una residencia. | 48 And having cast out of it all uncleanness, he placed in it men that should observe the law: and he fortified it, and made it his habitation. |
| 49 Los de la acrópolis de Jerusalén, como no podían moverse libremente por la región, sin comprar ni vender, padecían mucha hambre, y bastantes de ellos habían perecido por inanición. | 49 But they that were in the castle of Jerusalem were hindered from going out and coming into the country, and from buying and selling: and they were straitened with hunger, and many of them perished through famine. |
| 50 Clamaron a Simón que hiciera con ellos la paz y Simón se la concedió. Los expulsó de allí y purificó de profanaciones la acrópolis. | 50 And they cried to Simon form peace, and he granted it to them: and he cast them out from thence, and cleansed the castle from uncleannesses. |
| 51 El día veintitrés del segundo mes del año ciento setenta y uno, hicieron su entrada en ella, con aclamaciones y palmas, al son de cítaras, platillos y arpas, con himnos y cantos, porque el mayor enemigo había sido vencido y expulsado de Israel. | 51 And they entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month, in the year one hundred and seventy-one, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and harps, and cymbals, and psalteries, and hymns, and canticles, because the great enemy was destroyed out of Israel. |
| 52 Simón dispuso que este día se celebrara con júbilo todos los años. Fortificó el monte del templo que está al lado de la acrópolis y se estableció allí con los suyos. | 52 And he ordained that these days should be kept every year with gladness. |
| 53 Y cuando Simón vio que su hijo Juan era todo un hombre, le nombró jefe de todas las fuerzas del ejército con residencia en Guézer. | 53 And he fortified the mountain of the temple that was near the castle, and he dwelt there himself, and they that were with him. |
| 54 And Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man for war: and he made him captain of all the forces: and he dwelt in Gazara. |
