1 Saul was . . . years old when he became king, and reigned over Israel for . . . years.	1 Saul era figlio d un anno, quando cominciò a regnare e regnò due anni sopra Israele.
2 Saul selected three thousand men of Israel; two thousand of them were with Saul at Michmash and inthe highlands of Bethel, and one thousand with Jonathan at Geba of Benjamin; the rest of the people Saul senthome, everyone to his tent.	2 E poi si scelse tremila Israeliti, due nella dei quali stavano con Saul in Macmas e sul monte di Betel, mille con Gionata, in Gabaa di Beniamino; tutto il resto del popolo lo rimandò, ognuno a casa sua.
3 Jonathan kil ed the Philistine governor stationed at Gibeah and the Philistines were informed that theHebrews had risen in revolt. Saul had the trumpet sounded throughout the country,	3 Or Gionata percosse il presidio dei Filistei che era in Gabaa. Quando ciò fu risaputo dai Filistei, Saul fece sonar la tromba per tutto il paese e dire: « Lo sappiano gli Ebrei ».
4 and al Israel heard the news, 'Saul has kil ed the Philistine governor, and now Israel has antagonisedthe Philistines.' So all the people ral ied behind Saul at Gilgal.	4 E tutto Israele, udita questa nuova: Saul ha percosso il presidio dei Filistei, si levò contro i Filistei, e il popolo si mosse ad alte grida dietro a Saul in Galgala.
5 The Philistines mustered to make war on Israel, three thousand chariots, six thousand horse and aforce as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and pitched camp at Michmash, to the east ofBeth-Aven.	5 Ma i Filistei s'adunarono per combattere contro Israele: essi con trenta mila carri, sei mila cavalieri ed altra turba innumerabile come la rena che è sul lido del mare, salirono e posero il campo a Macmas, a oriente di Betaven.
6 When the Israelites saw that their plight was desperate, being so hard pressed, the people hid incaves, in holes, in crevices, in vaults, in wel s.	6 Gli uomini d'Israele, vedendosi ridotti alle strette (il popolo era scoraggiato), si nascosero nelle caverne, nelle grotte, e nei massi e negli antri e nelle cisterne.
7 Some also crossed the Jordan fords into the territory of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal and althe people who followed him were trembling.	7 Gli Ebrei poi passarono di là dal Giordano, nella terra di Gad e di Galaad. Saul era sempre in Galgala e il popolo che lo seguiva era impaurito.
8 He waited for seven days, the period fixed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and thearmy, deserting Saul, began dispersing.	8 Or avendo aspettato setto giorni, secondo l'ordine di Samuele, siccome Samuele non veniva a Galgala e il popolo si sbandava da lui,
9 Saul then said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the communion sacrifices.' And he presented the burntoffering.	9 Saul disse: « Portatemi l'olocausto e le ostie pacifiche ». E offerse l'olocausto.
10 Just as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet andgreet him.	10 Mentre finiva d'offrir l'olocausto, ecco Samuele. Saul gli andò incontro per salutarlo;
11 Samuel said, 'What have you been doing?' Saul replied, 'I saw the army deserting me anddispersing, and you had not come at the time fixed, while the Philistines were mustering at Michmash.	11 Ma Samuele gli disse: « Che hai fatto? » Saul rispose: « Vedendo che il popolo si sbandava, che tu non eri giunto dentro i giorni stabiliti e che i Filistei s'erano radunati a Macmas,
12 So I thought: Now the Philistines are going to fall on me at Gilgal and I have not implored the favourof Yahweh. So I felt obliged to make the burnt offering myself.'	12 ho detto: Ora i Filistei discenderanno contro di me in Galgala, avanti che io abbia placato la feccia del Signore, e spinto dalla necessità ho offerto l'olocausto ».
13 Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted like a fool. You have not obeyed the order which Yahweh yourGod gave you. Otherwise, Yahweh would have confirmed your sovereignty over Israel for ever.	13 E Samuele disse a Saul: « Hai agito stoltamente, e non hai osservati gli ordini che il Signore Dio tuo ti aveva prescritti. Se tu non avessi fatto questo, ora il Signore avrebbe già stabilito in sempiterno il tuo regno sopra Israele;
14 But now your sovereignty wil not last; Yahweh has discovered a man after his own heart anddesignated him as leader of his people, since you have not carried out what Yahweh ordered you.'	14 ma invece il tuo regno non sussisterà più in avvenire. Il Signore s'c cercato un uomo secondo il suo cuore, il Signore l'ha destinato ad essere capo del suo popolo, perchè tu non hai osservato ciò che aveva comandato il Signore ».
15 Samuel then got up and left Gilgal to continue his journey. Those people remaining followed Saul ashe went to join the warriors, and went from Gilgal to Geba of Benjamin. Saul reviewed the force that was withhim; there were about six hundred men.	15 Samuele se ne andò e sali da Galgala a Gabaa di Beniamino, e il resto del popolo salì dietro a Saul contro la turba dei Filistei che li assaliva mentre da Galgala andavano a Gabaa sul colle di Beniamino. Saul, fatta la rassegna della gente che si trovava con lui, si trovò con circa seicento uomini.
16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and the force that was with them took up their quarters in Geba of Benjaminwhile the Philistines camped at Michmash.	16 Or Saul, Gionata suo figlio e la gente che era con essi stavano in Gabaa di Beniamino; i Filistei erano a Macmas.
17 The raiding company sallied out of the Philistine camp in three groups: one group made for Ophrahin the territory of Shual;	17 Dai campi dei Filistei uscirono tre schiere per andare al saccheggio; una schiera prese la via di Efra verso la terra di Saul;
18 one group made for Beth-Horon; and one group made for the high ground overlooking the Valley ofthe Hyenas, in the direction of the desert.	18 la seconda prese la strada di Bethoron; la terza andava verso il territorio che domina la valle di Seboim, di faccia al deserto.
19 There was not a single blacksmith throughout the territory of Israel, the Philistines' reasoning being,'We do not want the Hebrews making swords or spears.'	19 Ma in tutto il paese d'Israele non si trovava un fabbro ferraio: l'avevano impedito i Filistei, perchè temevano che gli Ebrei facessero delle spade e delle lance.
20 Hence, the Israelites were al in the habit of going down individually to the Philistines to sharpen theirploughshares, axes, mattocks and scythes.	20 Perquesto ciascuno d'Israele doveva scendere dai Filistei, per fare aggiustare il suo vomere, la zappa, la scure, il sarshiello.
21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel for ploughshares and axes, and one-third for sharpeningmattocks and straightening goads.	21 Eran quindi smussate le punte dei vomeri, delle zappe, dei tridenti e delle scuri, non avendo nemmeno come acuminare un pungolo.
22 So it was that on the day of the battle, no one in the army with Saul and Jonathan was equipped witheither sword or spear; only Saul and his son Jonathan were so equipped.	22 Venuto adunque il dì della battaglia, nessuno di tutta la gente che era con Saul e Gionata aveva spada, o lancia; l'avevan soltanto Saul e Gionata suo figlio.
23 A Philistine unit set out for the Pass of Michmash.	23 Intanto un presidio dei Filistei era uscito per andare verso Macmas.
