1 Samuel 13

1 Saul was . . . years old when he became king, and reigned over Israel for . . . years.	1 SAULLE avea regnato un anno, quando queste cose avvennero; e poi, dopo aver regnato due anni sopra Israele,
2 Saul selected three thousand men of Israel; two thousand of them were with Saul at Michmash and inthe highlands of Bethel, and one thousand with Jonathan at Geba of Benjamin; the rest of the people Saul senthome, everyone to his tent.	2 scelse tremila uomini d’Israele; de’ quali duemila stettero con lui in Micmas, e nel monte di Betel, e mille con Gionatan, in Ghibea di Beniamino; e rimandò il rimanente del popolo, ciascuno alle sue stanze.
3 Jonathan kil ed the Philistine governor stationed at Gibeah and the Philistines were informed that theHebrews had risen in revolt. Saul had the trumpet sounded throughout the country,	3 E Gionatan percosse la guernigione de’ Filistei ch’era nel colle; e i Filistei l’intesero. E Saulle fece sonar la tromba per tutto il paese, dicendo: Odano gli Ebrei.
4 and al Israel heard the news, 'Saul has kil ed the Philistine governor, and now Israel has antagonisedthe Philistines.' So all the people ral ied behind Saul at Gilgal.	4 E tutto Israele udì dire: Saulle ha percossa la guernigione de’ Filistei, ed anche Israele è diventato abbominevole fra i Filistei. E il popolo fu adunato a grida in Ghilgal, per seguitare Saulle.
5 The Philistines mustered to make war on Israel, three thousand chariots, six thousand horse and aforce as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and pitched camp at Michmash, to the east ofBeth-Aven.	5 I Filistei si adunarono anch’essi per guerreggiare contro ad Israele, avendo trentamila carri, e seimila cavalieri, e della gente in moltitudine, come la rena che è in sul lito del mare. E salirono, e si accamparono in Micmas, verso l’Oriente di Bet-aven.
6 When the Israelites saw that their plight was desperate, being so hard pressed, the people hid incaves, in holes, in crevices, in vaults, in wel s.	6 Ora gl’Israeliti, veggendosi distretti, perciocchè il popolo era oppressato, si nascosero nelle spelonche, e per li greppi de’ monti, e nelle rupi, e nelle rocche, e nelle grotte.
7 Some also crossed the Jordan fords into the territory of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal and althe people who followed him were trembling.	7 E gli altri Ebrei passarono di là dal Giordano al paese di Gad e di Galaad. E Saulle non si moveva di Ghilgal, e tutto il popolo che lo seguitava era impaurito
8 He waited for seven days, the period fixed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and thearmy, deserting Saul, began dispersing.	8 Ed egli aspettò sette giorni, secondo il termine posto da Samuele; e Samuele non veniva in Ghilgal; laonde il popolo si dispergeva d’appresso a Saulle.
9 Saul then said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the communion sacrifices.' And he presented the burntoffering.	9 Allora Saulle disse: Adducetemi l’olocausto, e i sacrificii da render grazie. Ed egli offerse l’olocausto.
10 Just as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet andgreet him.	10 E, come egli forniva d’offerir l’olocausto, ecco, Samuele arrivò; e Saulle gli uscì incontro, per salutarlo.
11 Samuel said, 'What have you been doing?' Saul replied, 'I saw the army deserting me anddispersing, and you had not come at the time fixed, while the Philistines were mustering at Michmash.	11 Ma Samuele gli disse: Che hai fatto? E Saulle gli rispose: Perciocchè io vedeva che il popolo si dispergeva d’appresso a me, e che tu non venivi al termine posto de’ giorni, e che i Filistei erano adunati in Micmas, io dissi:
12 So I thought: Now the Philistines are going to fall on me at Gilgal and I have not implored the favourof Yahweh. So I felt obliged to make the burnt offering myself.'	12 I Filistei verranno ora contro a me in Ghilgal, ed io non ho supplicato al Signore; laonde, dopo essermi rattenuto quant’ho potuto, io ho offerto l’olocausto.
13 Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted like a fool. You have not obeyed the order which Yahweh yourGod gave you. Otherwise, Yahweh would have confirmed your sovereignty over Israel for ever.	13 Allora Samuele disse a Saulle: Tu hai follemente fatto, non avendo osservato il comandamento del Signore Iddio tuo, il quale egli ti avea dato; perciocchè il Signore avrebbe ora stabilito il tuo regno sopra Israele, in perpetuo.
14 But now your sovereignty wil not last; Yahweh has discovered a man after his own heart anddesignated him as leader of his people, since you have not carried out what Yahweh ordered you.'	14 Ma ora il tuo regno non sarà stabile; il Signore s’è cercato un uomo secondo il cuor suo, il quale egli ha ordinato per conduttore sopra il suo popolo; poichè tu non hai osservato quello che il Signore ti avea comandato
15 Samuel then got up and left Gilgal to continue his journey. Those people remaining followed Saul ashe went to join the warriors, and went from Gilgal to Geba of Benjamin. Saul reviewed the force that was withhim; there were about six hundred men.	15 Poi Samuele si levò, e salì da Ghilgal in Ghibea di Beniamino. E Saulle fece la rassegna della gente che si ritrovava con lui, ch’era d’intorno a seicent’uomini.
16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and the force that was with them took up their quarters in Geba of Benjaminwhile the Philistines camped at Michmash.	16 Or Saulle, e Gionatan suo figliuolo, e il popolo che si ritrovava con loro, se ne stavano in Ghibea di Beniamino; e i Filistei erano accampati in Micmas.
17 The raiding company sallied out of the Philistine camp in three groups: one group made for Ophrahin the territory of Shual;	17 E del campo de’ Filistei uscì della gente in tre schiere, da fare il guasto; l’una delle quali si voltò al cammino di Ofra, traendo verso il paese di Saulle;
18 one group made for Beth-Horon; and one group made for the high ground overlooking the Valley ofthe Hyenas, in the direction of the desert.	18 l’altra si voltò alla via di Bet-horon; e la terza si voltò alla via del confine del paese che riguarda su la valle di Seboim, verso il deserto.
19 There was not a single blacksmith throughout the territory of Israel, the Philistines' reasoning being,'We do not want the Hebrews making swords or spears.'	19 Or non si trovava alcun fabbro in tutto il paese d’Israele; perciocchè i Filistei aveano detto: Provvediamo che gli Ebrei non facciano spade nè lance.
20 Hence, the Israelites were al in the habit of going down individually to the Philistines to sharpen theirploughshares, axes, mattocks and scythes.	20 E tutto Israele scendeva a’ Filistei, per aguzzare, chi il suo vomero, chi la sua zappa, chi la sua scure, chi la sua vanga.
21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel for ploughshares and axes, and one-third for sharpeningmattocks and straightening goads.	21 E si servivano di lime per le vanghe, e per le zappe, e per li tridenti, e per le scuri, e per acconciare fino ad un pungolo.
22 So it was that on the day of the battle, no one in the army with Saul and Jonathan was equipped witheither sword or spear; only Saul and his son Jonathan were so equipped.	22 Laonde, al giorno della battaglia, avvenne che non si trovò nè spada, nè lancia, nelle mani d’alcuno del popolo ch’era con Saulle e con Gionatan; sol se ne trovò a Saulle, e a Gionatan, suo figliuolo.
23 A Philistine unit set out for the Pass of Michmash.	23 Poi la guernigione de’ Filistei uscì fuori verso il passo di Micmas
