1 Saul was . . . years old when he became king, and reigned over Israel for . . . years.	1 Amikor elmúlt egy esztendő attól kezdve, hogy Saul uralkodni kezdett és már második esztendeje uralkodott Izraelen,
2 Saul selected three thousand men of Israel; two thousand of them were with Saul at Michmash and inthe highlands of Bethel, and one thousand with Jonathan at Geba of Benjamin; the rest of the people Saul senthome, everyone to his tent.	2 választott magának Saul háromezer embert Izraelből. Ezek közül kétezren Saullal voltak Makmásban és Bétel hegyén, ezren pedig Jonatánnal a benjaminbeli Gibeában. A nép többi részét elbocsátotta, mindenkit a maga sátrába.
3 Jonathan kil ed the Philistine governor stationed at Gibeah and the Philistines were informed that theHebrews had risen in revolt. Saul had the trumpet sounded throughout the country,	3 Jonatán azonban megverte a filiszteusoknak azt az előőrsét, amely Gibeában volt. Amikor ezt a filiszteusok meghallották, Saul megfúvatta a harsonát az egész országban és azt mondta: »Hallják meg a héberek!«
4 and al Israel heard the news, 'Saul has kil ed the Philistine governor, and now Israel has antagonisedthe Philistines.' So all the people ral ied behind Saul at Gilgal.	4 Így egész Izrael meghallotta a hírt: »Megverte Saul a filiszteusok előőrsét.« Erre Izrael felkelt a filiszteusok ellen és összehívta a népet Saul mögé Gilgálba.
5 The Philistines mustered to make war on Israel, three thousand chariots, six thousand horse and aforce as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and pitched camp at Michmash, to the east ofBeth-Aven.	5 Összegyűltek a filiszteusok is, hogy hadakozzanak Izrael ellen harmincezer szekérrel és hatezer lovassal, s oly sok egyéb néppel, mint a tenger partján levő föveny, majd felvonultak és tábort ütöttek Makmásnál, Bétáventől keletre.
6 When the Israelites saw that their plight was desperate, being so hard pressed, the people hid incaves, in holes, in crevices, in vaults, in wel s.	6 Amikor Izrael emberei látták, hogy szorult helyzetbe jutottak (a filiszteusok ugyanis szorongatták a népet), elrejtőztek a barlangokba, a rejtekhelyekre, a sziklákba, az üregekbe meg a vermekbe,
7 Some also crossed the Jordan fords into the territory of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal and althe people who followed him were trembling.	7 sőt voltak héberek, akik átkeltek a Jordánon túlra, Gád és Gileád földjére. Saul ugyan kitartott Gilgálban, de a nép, amely követte, rettegett.
8 He waited for seven days, the period fixed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and thearmy, deserting Saul, began dispersing.	8 Így várakozott hét napig Sámuel meghagyása szerint, de Sámuel csak nem jött Gilgálba, a nép pedig lassanként elszéledt mellőle.
9 Saul then said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the communion sacrifices.' And he presented the burntoffering.	9 Erre Saul azt mondta: »Hozzátok ide az egészen elégő áldozatot és a békeáldozatokat« – és bemutatta az egészen elégő áldozatot.
10 Just as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet andgreet him.	10 Éppen mire elkészült az egészen elégő áldozat bemutatásával, íme, megérkezett Sámuel. Amikor Saul kiment eléje, hogy köszöntse,
11 Samuel said, 'What have you been doing?' Saul replied, 'I saw the army deserting me anddispersing, and you had not come at the time fixed, while the Philistines were mustering at Michmash.	11 azt mondta neki Sámuel: »Mit műveltél?!« Saul azt felelte: »Mivel láttam, hogy a nép kezd elszéledni mellőlem, te pedig nem jöttél meg a meghagyott időre, a filiszteusok meg már összegyűltek Makmásnál,
12 So I thought: Now the Philistines are going to fall on me at Gilgal and I have not implored the favourof Yahweh. So I felt obliged to make the burnt offering myself.'	12 azt mondtam: Most majd lejönnek ellenem a filiszteusok Gilgálba és én még nem is esedeztem az Úr színe előtt. Így a szükség arra kényszerített, hogy bemutassam az egészen elégő áldozatot.«
13 Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted like a fool. You have not obeyed the order which Yahweh yourGod gave you. Otherwise, Yahweh would have confirmed your sovereignty over Israel for ever.	13 Azt mondta erre Sámuel Saulnak: »Esztelenül cselekedtél: nem tartottad meg az Úrnak, Istenednek parancsát, amelyet meghagyott neked. Már pedig ha ezt nem tetted volna, most az Úr mindörökre megszilárdította volna királyságodat Izraelen.
14 But now your sovereignty wil not last; Yahweh has discovered a man after his own heart anddesignated him as leader of his people, since you have not carried out what Yahweh ordered you.'	14 Így azonban királyságod nem lesz maradandó. Keresett az Úr magának szíve szerint való embert, s azt rendelte népe fejedelmévé, mivel te nem tartottad meg, amit az Úr parancsolt.«
15 Samuel then got up and left Gilgal to continue his journey. Those people remaining followed Saul ashe went to join the warriors, and went from Gilgal to Geba of Benjamin. Saul reviewed the force that was withhim; there were about six hundred men.	15 Azzal Sámuel felkerekedett és felment Gilgálból Benjamin-Gibeába. Erre a megmaradt nép felvonult Saul vezérlete alatt az ellene hadbaszállt nép elé és el is jutott Gilgálból a Benjamin halmán levő Gibeába. Ekkor Saul megszámlálta a vele levő népet, s az mintegy hatszáz emberből állt.
16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and the force that was with them took up their quarters in Geba of Benjaminwhile the Philistines camped at Michmash.	16 Saul és fia, Jonatán meg a velük levő nép Benjamin-Gibeában helyezkedett el, a filiszteusok pedig Makmásban táboroztak.
17 The raiding company sallied out of the Philistine camp in three groups: one group made for Ophrahin the territory of Shual;	17 Ekkor kivonult a filiszteusok táborából három csapat zsákmányolni: az egyik csapat az Efrába vivő útra, Suál földje felé tartott,
18 one group made for Beth-Horon; and one group made for the high ground overlooking the Valley ofthe Hyenas, in the direction of the desert.	18 a másik a Béthoronba vivő útra tért, a harmadik a határ felé vivő, a Ceboim völgy felett a pusztára húzódó útra fordult.
19 There was not a single blacksmith throughout the territory of Israel, the Philistines' reasoning being,'We do not want the Hebrews making swords or spears.'	19 Ekkoriban Izrael egész földjén nem akadt kovács, mert a filiszteusok attól tartottak, hogy a héberek kardot vagy dárdát találnak készíteni,
20 Hence, the Israelites were al in the habit of going down individually to the Philistines to sharpen theirploughshares, axes, mattocks and scythes.	20 s azért egész Izraelnek a filiszteusokhoz kellett lejárnia, hogy mindenki megélesíttethesse ekevasát, kapáját, fejszéjét és ásóját.
21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel for ploughshares and axes, and one-third for sharpeningmattocks and straightening goads.	21 Így tehát az ekevasaknak, kapáknak, háromágú villáknak, fejszéknek és ösztökéknek az élesítése egy pímbe került.
22 So it was that on the day of the battle, no one in the army with Saul and Jonathan was equipped witheither sword or spear; only Saul and his son Jonathan were so equipped.	22 Amikor aztán eljött a csata napja, a Saullal és Jonatánnal levő egész nép kezében nem akadt sem kard, sem dárda, csak Saulnál és fiánál, Jonatánnál.
23 A Philistine unit set out for the Pass of Michmash.	23 Ekkor a filiszteusok előőrse kivonult, hogy Makmás elé kerüljön.
