1 Saul was . . . years old when he became king, and reigned over Israel for . . . years.	1 ... ...
2 Saul selected three thousand men of Israel; two thousand of them were with Saul at Michmash and inthe highlands of Bethel, and one thousand with Jonathan at Geba of Benjamin; the rest of the people Saul senthome, everyone to his tent.	2 Se eligió Saúl 3.000 hombres de Israel; había 2.000 con Saúl en Mikmás y en las montañas de Betel, y mil con Jonatán en Gueba de Benjamín, y el resto del pueblo lo devolvió a sus tiendas.
3 Jonathan kil ed the Philistine governor stationed at Gibeah and the Philistines were informed that theHebrews had risen in revolt. Saul had the trumpet sounded throughout the country,	3 Jonatán mató al gobernador de los filisteos que se hallaba en Guibeá, y supieron los filisteos que los hebreos se habian rebelado. Saúl hizo sonar el cuerno por toda la tierra,
4 and al Israel heard the news, 'Saul has kil ed the Philistine governor, and now Israel has antagonisedthe Philistines.' So all the people ral ied behind Saul at Gilgal.	4 y todo Israel oyó la noticia: «Saúl ha matado al gobernador de los filisteos. Israel se ha hecho odioso a los filisteos». Y se reunió el pueblo tras Saúl en Guilgal.
5 The Philistines mustered to make war on Israel, three thousand chariots, six thousand horse and aforce as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and pitched camp at Michmash, to the east ofBeth-Aven.	5 Se concentraron los filisteos para combatir a Israel: 3.000 carros, 6.000 caballos y un ejército tan numeroso como la arena de la orilla del mar; y acamparon en Mikmás, al este de Bet Avén.
6 When the Israelites saw that their plight was desperate, being so hard pressed, the people hid incaves, in holes, in crevices, in vaults, in wel s.	6 Cuando los hombres de Israel se vieron en peligro, porque se les apretaba de cerca, se escondió la gente en las cavernas, los agujeros, las hendiduras de las peñas, los subterráneos y las cisternas.
7 Some also crossed the Jordan fords into the territory of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal and althe people who followed him were trembling.	7 Algunos hebreos pasaron también el Jordán al país de Gad y Galaad. Saúl estaba todavía en Guilgal y todo el pueblo temblaba junto a él.
8 He waited for seven days, the period fixed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and thearmy, deserting Saul, began dispersing.	8 Esperó siete días conforme al plazo que Samuel había fijado, pero Samuel no llegó a Guilgal y el ejército se desbandó, abandonando a Saúl.
9 Saul then said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the communion sacrifices.' And he presented the burntoffering.	9 Entonces Saúl dijo: «Acercadme el holocausto y los sacrificios de comunión», y ofreció el holocausto.
10 Just as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet andgreet him.	10 Acababa él de ofrecer el holocausto, cuando llegó Samuel, y Saúl le salió al encuentro para saludarle.
11 Samuel said, 'What have you been doing?' Saul replied, 'I saw the army deserting me anddispersing, and you had not come at the time fixed, while the Philistines were mustering at Michmash.	11 Samuel dijo: «¿Qué has hecho?» Y Saúl respondió: «Como vi que el ejército me abandonaba y se desbandaba, que, por otro lado, tú no venías en el plazo fijado, y que los filisteos estaban ya concentrados en Mikmás,
12 So I thought: Now the Philistines are going to fall on me at Gilgal and I have not implored the favourof Yahweh. So I felt obliged to make the burnt offering myself.'	12 me dije: Ahora los filisteos van a bajar contra mí a Guilgal y no he apaciguado a Yahveh. Entonces me he visto forzado a ofrecer el holocausto».
13 Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted like a fool. You have not obeyed the order which Yahweh yourGod gave you. Otherwise, Yahweh would have confirmed your sovereignty over Israel for ever.	13 Samuel dijo a Saúl: «Te has portado como un necio. Si hubieras cumplido la orden que Yahveh tu Dios te ha dado, entonces Yahveh hubiera afianzado tu reino para siempre sobre Israel.
14 But now your sovereignty wil not last; Yahweh has discovered a man after his own heart anddesignated him as leader of his people, since you have not carried out what Yahweh ordered you.'	14 Pero ahora tu reino no se mantendrá. Yahveh se ha buscado un hombre según su corazón, al que ha designado caudillo de su pueblo, porque tú no has cumplido lo que Yahveh te había ordenado».
15 Samuel then got up and left Gilgal to continue his journey. Those people remaining followed Saul ashe went to join the warriors, and went from Gilgal to Geba of Benjamin. Saul reviewed the force that was withhim; there were about six hundred men.	15 Se levantó Samuel y partió de Guilgal para seguir su camino. Los que quedaban del pueblo subieron tras Saúl al encuentro de los hombres de guerra, y vino de Guilgal a Gueba de Benjamín. Saúl pasó revista a las tropas que tenía con él: había unos seiscientos hombres.
16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and the force that was with them took up their quarters in Geba of Benjaminwhile the Philistines camped at Michmash.	16 Saúl, su hijo Jonatán y las tropas que estaban con ellos, se hallaban situados en Gueba de Benjamín, mientras que los filisteos acampaban en Mikmás.
17 The raiding company sallied out of the Philistine camp in three groups: one group made for Ophrahin the territory of Shual;	17 La fuerza de choque salió del campo filisteo en tres columnas: una columna tomó la dirección de Ofrá, en la comarca de Sual;
18 one group made for Beth-Horon; and one group made for the high ground overlooking the Valley ofthe Hyenas, in the direction of the desert.	18 otra tomó la dirección de Bet Jorón y la tercera tomó la dirección del alto que domina el valle de los Seboím, hacia el desierto.
19 There was not a single blacksmith throughout the territory of Israel, the Philistines' reasoning being,'We do not want the Hebrews making swords or spears.'	19 No había herreros en todo el territorio de Israel, porque los filisteos se decían: «Que no hagan los hebreos espadas ni lanzas».
20 Hence, the Israelites were al in the habit of going down individually to the Philistines to sharpen theirploughshares, axes, mattocks and scythes.	20 Así todos los israelitas tenían que bajar a los filisteos para vaciar cada cual su reja, su hacha, su azuela o su aguijada.
21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel for ploughshares and axes, and one-third for sharpeningmattocks and straightening goads.	21 El precio era dos tercios de siclo por aguzar las azuelas y enderezar la aguijada.
22 So it was that on the day of the battle, no one in the army with Saul and Jonathan was equipped witheither sword or spear; only Saul and his son Jonathan were so equipped.	22 Y así ocurrió que el día de la batalla nadie, en toda la tropa que estaba con Saúl y Jonatán, tenía en la mano espada ni lanza. Las había sólo para Saúl y para su hijo Jonatán.
23 A Philistine unit set out for the Pass of Michmash.	23 Una avanzadilla de filisteos partió hacia el paso de Mikmás.
