1 Saul was . . . years old when he became king, and reigned over Israel for . . . years.	1 Saul war . . . Jahre alt, als er König wurde, und er regierte zwei . . . Jahre über Israel.
2 Saul selected three thousand men of Israel; two thousand of them were with Saul at Michmash and inthe highlands of Bethel, and one thousand with Jonathan at Geba of Benjamin; the rest of the people Saul senthome, everyone to his tent.	2 Saul wählte sich dreitausend Mann aus Israel aus; zweitausend davon waren bei Saul in Michmas und auf dem Berg von Bet-El und tausend waren bei Jonatan in Gibea-Benjamin. Den Rest des Volkes entließ er, jeden zu seinem Zelt.
3 Jonathan kil ed the Philistine governor stationed at Gibeah and the Philistines were informed that theHebrews had risen in revolt. Saul had the trumpet sounded throughout the country,	3 Jonatan erschlug den Vogt der Philister, der in Geba saß; die Philister hörten davon. Saul aber ließ im ganzen Land das Widderhorn blasen und ausrufen: Die Hebräer sollen es hören.
4 and al Israel heard the news, 'Saul has kil ed the Philistine governor, and now Israel has antagonisedthe Philistines.' So all the people ral ied behind Saul at Gilgal.	4 Und ganz Israel hörte die Kunde: Saul hat den Vogt der Philister erschlagen und dadurch hat sich Israel bei den Philistern verhasst gemacht. Das Volk wurde aufgeboten, Saul nach Gilgal zu folgen.
5 The Philistines mustered to make war on Israel, three thousand chariots, six thousand horse and aforce as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and pitched camp at Michmash, to the east ofBeth-Aven.	5 Die Philister versammelten sich zum Kampf gegen Israel; sie hatten dreitausend Wagen und sechstausend Wagenkämpfer und ein Heer so zahlreich wie der Sand am Ufer des Meeres. Sie zogen herauf und schlugen bei Michmas, östlich von Bet-Awen, ihr Lager auf.
6 When the Israelites saw that their plight was desperate, being so hard pressed, the people hid incaves, in holes, in crevices, in vaults, in wel s.	6 Als die Israeliten sahen, dass sie in Gefahr gerieten und dass das Volk bedrängt wurde, versteckten sie sich in Höhlen, Schlupflöchern, Felsspalten, Gruben und Zisternen.
7 Some also crossed the Jordan fords into the territory of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal and althe people who followed him were trembling.	7 Viele gingen über den Jordan in das Land Gad und Gilead. Saul war noch in Gilgal und das ganze Volk, das ihm gefolgt war, hatte große Angst.
8 He waited for seven days, the period fixed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and thearmy, deserting Saul, began dispersing.	8 Er wartete in Gilgal sieben Tage auf Samuel, wie vereinbart, aber Samuel kam nicht. Als ihm nun das Volk davonlief,
9 Saul then said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the communion sacrifices.' And he presented the burntoffering.	9 sagte Saul: Bringt das Brandopfer und die Heilsopfer zu mir her! Und er brachte das Opfer dar.
10 Just as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet andgreet him.	10 Gerade als er mit der Darbringung des Opfers fertig war, kam Samuel. Saul ging ihm entgegen, um ihn zu begrüßen.
11 Samuel said, 'What have you been doing?' Saul replied, 'I saw the army deserting me anddispersing, and you had not come at the time fixed, while the Philistines were mustering at Michmash.	11 Samuel aber fragte: Was hast du getan? Saul antwortete: Weil ich sah, dass mir das Volk davonlief und du nicht zu dem vereinbarten Zeitpunkt gekommen bist und die Philister sich bei Michmas versammelt haben,
12 So I thought: Now the Philistines are going to fall on me at Gilgal and I have not implored the favourof Yahweh. So I felt obliged to make the burnt offering myself.'	12 dachte ich: Jetzt werden die Philister gegen mich nach Gilgal herabziehen, noch ehe ich den Herrn gnädig gestimmt habe. Darum habe ich es gewagt, das Brandopfer darzubringen.
13 Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted like a fool. You have not obeyed the order which Yahweh yourGod gave you. Otherwise, Yahweh would have confirmed your sovereignty over Israel for ever.	13 Samuel erwiderte Saul: Du hast töricht gehandelt: Hättest du den Befehl befolgt, den dir der Herr, dein Gott, gegeben hat, dann hätte er jetzt deine Herrschaft über Israel für immer gefestigt.
14 But now your sovereignty wil not last; Yahweh has discovered a man after his own heart anddesignated him as leader of his people, since you have not carried out what Yahweh ordered you.'	14 Nun aber wird deine Herrschaft keinen Bestand haben. Der Herr hat sich einen Mann nach seinem Herzen gesucht und ihn zum Fürsten seines Volkes gemacht. Denn du hast nicht befolgt, was der Herr dir befohlen hat.
15 Samuel then got up and left Gilgal to continue his journey. Those people remaining followed Saul ashe went to join the warriors, and went from Gilgal to Geba of Benjamin. Saul reviewed the force that was withhim; there were about six hundred men.	15 Danach brach Samuel auf und ging von Gilgal nach Gibea-Benjamin hinauf. Saul musterte das Volk, das noch bei ihm war; es waren etwa sechshundert Mann.
16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and the force that was with them took up their quarters in Geba of Benjaminwhile the Philistines camped at Michmash.	16 Saul, sein Sohn Jonatan und die Leute, die noch bei ihnen waren, standen bei Geba-Benjamin, während die Philister ihr Lager bei Michmas hatten.
17 The raiding company sallied out of the Philistine camp in three groups: one group made for Ophrahin the territory of Shual;	17 Da zogen aus dem Lager der Philister drei Abteilungen aus, um zu plündern. Eine Abteilung wandte sich in Richtung Ofra im Gebiet von Schual;

19 There was not a single blacksmith throughout the territory of Israel, the Philistines' reasoning being,'We do not want the Hebrews making swords or spears.'	19 Damals war im ganzen Land kein Schmied zu finden. Denn die Philister hatten sich gesagt: Die Hebräer sollen sich keine Schwerter und Lanzen machen können.
20 Hence, the Israelites were al in the habit of going down individually to the Philistines to sharpen theirploughshares, axes, mattocks and scythes.	20 Alle Israeliten mussten zu den Philistern hinabgehen, wenn jemand sich eine Pflugschar, eine Hacke, eine Axt oder eine Sichel schmieden lassen wollte.
21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel for ploughshares and axes, and one-third for sharpeningmattocks and straightening goads.	21 Der Preis für das Schärfen der Pflugscharen, der Hacken, des Dreizacks und der Äxte und das Einsetzen des Ochsenstachels betrug ein Pim.
22 So it was that on the day of the battle, no one in the army with Saul and Jonathan was equipped witheither sword or spear; only Saul and his son Jonathan were so equipped.	22 Als es nun zum Krieg kam, fand sich im ganzen Volk, das bei Saul und Jonatan war, weder ein Schwert noch ein Speer. Nur Saul und sein Sohn Jonatan hatten (solche Waffen).
