1 Samuel 13

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Saul was . . . years old when he became king, and reigned over Israel for . . . years.	1 Saul aveva trent'anni, quando diventò re e regnò quarant'anni su Israele.
2 Saul selected three thousand men of Israel; two thousand of them were with Saul at Michmash and inthe highlands of Bethel, and one thousand with Jonathan at Geba of Benjamin; the rest of the people Saul senthome, everyone to his tent.	2 Saul si scelse tremila uomini da Israele: duemila erano con Saul a Micmas e sul monte di Betel, mille erano con Gionata a Gàbaa di Beniamino; rimandò invece il resto del popolo, ognuno alla sua tenda.
3 Jonathan kil ed the Philistine governor stationed at Gibeah and the Philistines were informed that theHebrews had risen in revolt. Saul had the trumpet sounded throughout the country,	3 Gionata batté il presidio dei Filistei che si trovava a Gàbaa, ma lo riseppero i Filistei. Allora Saul suonò il corno in tutto il paese dicendo: "Ascoltino gli Ebrei!".
4 and al Israel heard the news, 'Saul has kil ed the Philistine governor, and now Israel has antagonisedthe Philistines.' So all the people ral ied behind Saul at Gilgal.	4 Tutto Israele udì e disse: "Saul ha battuto il presidio dei Filistei, Israele si è anche reso odioso ai Filistei". Allora il popolo fu richiamato a Gàlgala al seguito di Saul.
5 The Philistines mustered to make war on Israel, three thousand chariots, six thousand horse and aforce as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and pitched camp at Michmash, to the east ofBeth-Aven.	5 I Filistei intanto si erano radunati per far guerra contro Israele: trentamila carri, seimila cavalieri e una truppa numerosa come la rena che è in riva al mare. Salirono e si accamparono a Micmas ad oriente di Bet-Aven.
6 When the Israelites saw that their plight was desperate, being so hard pressed, the people hid incaves, in holes, in crevices, in vaults, in wel s.	6 Quando gl'Israeliti si accorsero di trovarsi in angustia e la gente era incalzata, si nascosero nelle caverne, nelle boscaglie, tra le balze, nei sotterranei e nelle cisterne.
7 Some also crossed the Jordan fords into the territory of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal and althe people who followed him were trembling.	7 Alcuni Ebrei passarono il Giordano verso la terra di Gad e il Gàlaad. Mentre Saul era a Gàlgala, tutto il popolo che lo seguiva tremava dalla paura.
8 He waited for seven days, the period fixed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and thearmy, deserting Saul, began dispersing.	8 Attese sette giorni secondo il tempo fissato da Samuele, ma Samuele non arrivò a Gàlgala; cosicché il popolo si allontanava da lui.
9 Saul then said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the communion sacrifices.' And he presented the burntoffering.	9 Disse allora Saul: "Portatemi l'olocausto e i sacrifici di comunione". Ed offrì l'olocausto.
10 Just as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet andgreet him.	10 Appena finito di offrire l'olocausto, ecco arrivare Samuele; Saul gli uscì incontro per salutarlo.
11 Samuel said, 'What have you been doing?' Saul replied, 'I saw the army deserting me anddispersing, and you had not come at the time fixed, while the Philistines were mustering at Michmash.	11 Samuele domandò: "Che cosa hai fatto?". Saul rispose: "Ho veduto che il popolo si allontanava da me e tu non eri venuto al giorno stabilito, mentre i Filistei si trovano adunati a Micmas.
12 So I thought: Now the Philistines are going to fall on me at Gilgal and I have not implored the favourof Yahweh. So I felt obliged to make the burnt offering myself.'	12 Allora ho detto: Ora scenderanno i Filistei verso di me a Gàlgala, mentre io non ho propiziato il Signore! Così mi sono fatto forza e ho offerto l'olocausto".
13 Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted like a fool. You have not obeyed the order which Yahweh yourGod gave you. Otherwise, Yahweh would have confirmed your sovereignty over Israel for ever.	13 Samuele rispose a Saul: "Hai agito stoltamente non osservando il comando che ti ha dato il Signore tuo Dio, perché ora il Signore avrebbe stabilito per sempre la tua regalità su Israele.
14 But now your sovereignty wil not last; Yahweh has discovered a man after his own heart anddesignated him as leader of his people, since you have not carried out what Yahweh ordered you.'	14 Ora invece la tua regalità non permarrà! Il Signore si è cercato un uomo secondo il suo cuore, lo ha designato principe sul suo popolo, poiché tu non hai osservato quello che il Signore ti aveva comandato".
15 Samuel then got up and left Gilgal to continue his journey. Those people remaining followed Saul ashe went to join the warriors, and went from Gilgal to Geba of Benjamin. Saul reviewed the force that was withhim; there were about six hundred men.	15 Samuele si alzò, risalì da Gàlgala e se ne andò per la sua via. Il resto del popolo salì ad incontrare i guerrieri al seguito di Saul e giunse da Gàlgala a Gàbaa di Beniamino. Saul passò in rassegna la truppa che si trovava con lui: erano circa seicento uomini.
16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and the force that was with them took up their quarters in Geba of Benjaminwhile the Philistines camped at Michmash.	16 Mentre Saul, suo figlio Gionata e la truppa che si trovava con loro erano stazionati a Gàbaa di Beniamino, i Filistei erano accampati a Micmas.
17 The raiding company sallied out of the Philistine camp in three groups: one group made for Ophrahin the territory of Shual;	17 Dal campo dei Filistei fece irruzione il gruppo guastatori diviso in tre pattuglie: una pattuglia si diresse sulla via di Ofra verso la terra di Suàl;
18 one group made for Beth-Horon; and one group made for the high ground overlooking the Valley ofthe Hyenas, in the direction of the desert.	18 un'altra pattuglia si diresse sulla via di Bet-Coron; la terza pattuglia si diresse sulla via del confine che dà sulla valle di Zeboìm verso il deserto.
19 There was not a single blacksmith throughout the territory of Israel, the Philistines' reasoning being,'We do not want the Hebrews making swords or spears.'	19 Allora non si trovava un fabbro in tutto il paese di Israele, perché i Filistei dicevano: "Che gli Ebrei non facciano spade né lance!".
20 Hence, the Israelites were al in the habit of going down individually to the Philistines to sharpen theirploughshares, axes, mattocks and scythes.	20 Così ogni Israelita scendeva dai Filistei per affilare il proprio vomere, lama, scure o lama del vomere.
21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel for ploughshares and axes, and one-third for sharpeningmattocks and straightening goads.	21 L'affilatura costava due terzi di siclo per il vomere, le lame, e un terzo l'affilatura delle scuri e del pungolo.
22 So it was that on the day of the battle, no one in the army with Saul and Jonathan was equipped witheither sword or spear; only Saul and his son Jonathan were so equipped.	22 E così, nel giorno della battaglia, non si trovava una spada né una lancia in mano a tutto il popolo che era con Saul e con Gionata. Ne fu trovata solo una per Saul e per suo figlio Gionata.
23 A Philistine unit set out for the Pass of Michmash.	23 Intanto una postazione di Filistei uscì verso il passo di Micmas.
