1 Saul was . . . years old when he became king, and reigned over Israel for . . . years.	1 - Saul era figlio di un anno quando incominciò a regnare e regnò due anni sopra Israele.
2 Saul selected three thousand men of Israel; two thousand of them were with Saul at Michmash and inthe highlands of Bethel, and one thousand with Jonathan at Geba of Benjamin; the rest of the people Saul senthome, everyone to his tent.	2 Saul si scelse tremila Israeliti, di cui duemila stavano con lui in Macmas e sul monte di Betel e mille con Gionata in Gabaa di Beniamino, e rimandò il resto del popolo, ognuno alle sue tende.
3 Jonathan kil ed the Philistine governor stationed at Gibeah and the Philistines were informed that theHebrews had risen in revolt. Saul had the trumpet sounded throughout the country,	3 Avendo Gionata percossa la guarnigione dei Filistei, che stava in Gabaa, ed essendo la cosa venuta a cognizione dei Filistei, Saul fece sonar la tromba per tutto il paese e dire: «Lo sappiano gli Ebrei»:
4 and al Israel heard the news, 'Saul has kil ed the Philistine governor, and now Israel has antagonisedthe Philistines.' So all the people ral ied behind Saul at Gilgal.	4 e tutto Israele udì questa notizia: «Saul ha battuto la guarnigione dei Filistei»; e Israele si levò contro i Filistei e acclamò a Saul in Galgala.
5 The Philistines mustered to make war on Israel, three thousand chariots, six thousand horse and aforce as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and pitched camp at Michmash, to the east ofBeth-Aven.	5 Anche i Filistei si riunirono per combattere contro Israele con trentamila carri, seimila cavalieri e gente numerosa come la rena sul lido del mare. E salendo si accamparono a Macmas ad oriente di Betaven.
6 When the Israelites saw that their plight was desperate, being so hard pressed, the people hid incaves, in holes, in crevices, in vaults, in wel s.	6 Come si accòrsero però gli Israeliti d'essere messi così alle strette, (perchè il popolo si era perso di animo), si nascosero nelle spelonche e nelle grotte, fra le rocce, negli antri e nelle cisterne;
7 Some also crossed the Jordan fords into the territory of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal and althe people who followed him were trembling.	7 mentre altri Ebrei passarono al di là del Giordano nel paese di Gad e di Galaad, e ancorchè Saul fosse ancora in Galgala, tutto il popolo che lo accompagnava era impaurito.
8 He waited for seven days, the period fixed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and thearmy, deserting Saul, began dispersing.	8 [Saul] attese sette giorni secondo l'ordine di Samuele, ma Samuele non venne in Galgala e il popolo si sbandò da Saul.
9 Saul then said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the communion sacrifices.' And he presented the burntoffering.	9 Disse perciò Saul: «Portatemi l'olocausto e l'ostia pacifica». E offrì l'olocausto.
10 Just as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet andgreet him.	10 Mentre finiva di immolare l'olocausto giunse Samuele, e Saul gli mosse incontro per salutarlo.
11 Samuel said, 'What have you been doing?' Saul replied, 'I saw the army deserting me anddispersing, and you had not come at the time fixed, while the Philistines were mustering at Michmash.	11 Ma, Samuele gli disse: «Che hai tu fatto?». Saul rispose: «Avendo visto che il popolo si sbandava da me e che tu non venivi nel giorno stabilito, e d'altronde trovandosi i Filistei riuniti in Macmas,
12 So I thought: Now the Philistines are going to fall on me at Gilgal and I have not implored the favourof Yahweh. So I felt obliged to make the burnt offering myself.'	12 dissi: - Ora i Filistei scenderanno contro di me in Galgala ed io non ho ancora placato il Signore. - Costretto quindi dalla necessità, offrii l'olocausto».
13 Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted like a fool. You have not obeyed the order which Yahweh yourGod gave you. Otherwise, Yahweh would have confirmed your sovereignty over Israel for ever.	13 Allora Samuele disse a Saul: «Tu hai agito stoltamente, e non hai osservato i comandi che il Signore Dio tuo ti aveva dato. Se tu non avessi fatto ciò, il Signore avrebbe consolidato per sempre il tuo regno sopra Israele;
14 But now your sovereignty wil not last; Yahweh has discovered a man after his own heart anddesignated him as leader of his people, since you have not carried out what Yahweh ordered you.'	14 invece il regno tuo non durerà in avvenire. Il Signore s'è cercato un uomo secondo il cuor suo ed il Signore gli ha comandato di essere capo del suo popolo poichè tu non hai ubbidito a ciò che il Signore aveva comandato».
15 Samuel then got up and left Gilgal to continue his journey. Those people remaining followed Saul ashe went to join the warriors, and went from Gilgal to Geba of Benjamin. Saul reviewed the force that was withhim; there were about six hundred men.	15 Si levò quindi Samuele e salì da Galgala a Gabaa di Beniamino. Quel che era restato del popolo salì poi dietro a Saul per incontrarsi col popolo [dei Filistei] che assalivano quei che salivano da Galgala a Gabaa, sul colle di Beniamino. Saul passò quindi in rassegna la sua gente che si trovava ancora con lui ed era di circa seicento uomini.
16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and the force that was with them took up their quarters in Geba of Benjaminwhile the Philistines camped at Michmash.	16 Saul, Gionata suo figlio e la gente che si trovò con essi stavano adunque in Gabaa di Beniamino, mentre i Filistei si stabilirono in Macmas.
17 The raiding company sallied out of the Philistine camp in three groups: one group made for Ophrahin the territory of Shual;	17 Ora dal campo dei Filistei erano uscite tre bande per fare delle scorrerie; una s'era incamminata per la via di Efra, verso la terra di Saul;
18 one group made for Beth-Horon; and one group made for the high ground overlooking the Valley ofthe Hyenas, in the direction of the desert.	18 l'altra prese la via di Betoron, mentre la terza erasi volta verso il confine che sovrasta dalla parte del deserto alla valle di Seboim.
19 There was not a single blacksmith throughout the territory of Israel, the Philistines' reasoning being,'We do not want the Hebrews making swords or spears.'	19 Ora in tutto il paese d'Israele non eravi fabbro ferraio, avendo i Filistei avuto questa precauzione perchè non potessero gli Ebrei fabbricarsi spade o lance.
20 Hence, the Israelites were al in the habit of going down individually to the Philistines to sharpen theirploughshares, axes, mattocks and scythes.	20 E tutto Israele scendeva dai Filistei per farsi affilare il vomere, la zappa, la scure e il sarchiello.
21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel for ploughshares and axes, and one-third for sharpeningmattocks and straightening goads.	21 Erano perciò spuntati e il vomere e le zappe e i tridenti e le scuri, e perfino i pugnali avevan bisogno di essere affilati;
22 So it was that on the day of the battle, no one in the army with Saul and Jonathan was equipped witheither sword or spear; only Saul and his son Jonathan were so equipped.	22 e quando venne il giorno della battaglia non si trovò tra le mani del popolo che era con Saul e Gionata nè spada, nè lancia, fatta eccezione di Saul e di Gionata suo figlio.
23 A Philistine unit set out for the Pass of Michmash.	23 Frattanto un presidio dei Filistei uscì per andare verso Macmas.
