1 Samuel 13

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Saul was . . . years old when he became king, and reigned over Israel for . . . years.	1 Saül était âgé de... ans lorsqu'il devint roi, et il régna... ans sur Israël.
2 Saul selected three thousand men of Israel; two thousand of them were with Saul at Michmash and inthe highlands of Bethel, and one thousand with Jonathan at Geba of Benjamin; the rest of the people Saul senthome, everyone to his tent.	2 Saül se choisit 3.000 hommes d'Israël: il y en eut 2.000 avec Saül à Mikmas et dans la montagnede Béthel, il y en eut mille avec Jonathan à Géba de Benjamin, et Saül renvoya le reste du peuple chacun à satente.
3 Jonathan kil ed the Philistine governor stationed at Gibeah and the Philistines were informed that theHebrews had risen in revolt. Saul had the trumpet sounded throughout the country,	3 Jonathan tua le préfet des Philistins qui se trouvait à Gibéa et les Philistins apprirent que lesHébreux s'étaient révoltés. Saül fit sonner du cor dans tout le pays
4 and al Israel heard the news, 'Saul has kil ed the Philistine governor, and now Israel has antagonisedthe Philistines.' So all the people ral ied behind Saul at Gilgal.	4 et tout Israël reçut la nouvelle: "Saül a tué le préfet des Philistins, Israël s'est même rendu odieuxaux Philistins!" et le peuple se groupa derrière Saül à Gilgal.
5 The Philistines mustered to make war on Israel, three thousand chariots, six thousand horse and aforce as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and pitched camp at Michmash, to the east ofBeth-Aven.	5 Les Philistins se rassemblèrent pour combattre Israël, 3.000 chars, 6.000 chevaux et une troupeaussi nombreuse que le sable du bord de la mer, et ils vinrent camper à Mikmas, à l'orient de Bet-Avèn.
6 When the Israelites saw that their plight was desperate, being so hard pressed, the people hid incaves, in holes, in crevices, in vaults, in wel s.	6 Lorsque les Israélites se virent en détresse, car on les serrait de près, les gens se cachèrent dansles grottes, les trous, les failles de rocher, les souterrains et les citernes.
7 Some also crossed the Jordan fords into the territory of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal and althe people who followed him were trembling.	7 Ils passèrent aussi par les gués du Jourdain au pays de Gad et de Galaad. Saül était encore àGilgal et le peuple tremblait derrière lui.
8 He waited for seven days, the period fixed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and thearmy, deserting Saul, began dispersing.	8 Il attendit sept jours, selon le terme que Samuel avait fixé, mais Samuel ne vint pas à Gilgal etl'armée, quittant Saül, se débanda.
9 Saul then said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the communion sacrifices.' And he presented the burntoffering.	9 Alors celui-ci dit: "Amenez-moi l'holocauste et les sacrifices de communion", et il offritl'holocauste.
10 Just as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet andgreet him.	10 Or il achevait d'offrir l'holocauste lorsque Samuel arriva, et Saül sortit à sa rencontre pour lesaluer.
11 Samuel said, 'What have you been doing?' Saul replied, 'I saw the army deserting me anddispersing, and you had not come at the time fixed, while the Philistines were mustering at Michmash.	11 Samuel dit: "Qu'as-tu fait", et Saül répondit: "J'ai vu que l'armée me quittait et se débandait, qued'autre part tu n'étais pas venu au jour fixé et que les Philistins étaient rassemblés à Mikmas.
12 So I thought: Now the Philistines are going to fall on me at Gilgal and I have not implored the favourof Yahweh. So I felt obliged to make the burnt offering myself.'	12 Je me suis dit: Maintenant les Philistins vont descendre sur moi à Gilgal et je n'aurai pas apaiséYahvé! Alors je me suis contraint et j'ai offert l'holocauste."
13 Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted like a fool. You have not obeyed the order which Yahweh yourGod gave you. Otherwise, Yahweh would have confirmed your sovereignty over Israel for ever.	13 Samuel dit à Saül: "Tu as agi en insensé! Tu n'as pas observé l'ordre que Yahvé ton Dieu t'adonné. Autrement Yahvé aurait affermi pour toujours ta royauté sur Israël,
14 But now your sovereignty wil not last; Yahweh has discovered a man after his own heart anddesignated him as leader of his people, since you have not carried out what Yahweh ordered you.'	14 mais maintenant, ta royauté ne tiendra pas: Yahvé s'est cherché un homme selon son coeur et ill'a désigné comme chef sur son peuple, parce que tu n'as pas observé ce que Yahvé t'avait commandé."
15 Samuel then got up and left Gilgal to continue his journey. Those people remaining followed Saul ashe went to join the warriors, and went from Gilgal to Geba of Benjamin. Saul reviewed the force that was withhim; there were about six hundred men.	15 Samuel se leva et partit de Gilgal pour suivre son chemin. Ce qui restait du peuple montaderrière Saül à la rencontre des hommes de guerre et vint de Gilgal à Géba de Benjamin. Saül passa en revue latroupe qui se trouvait avec lui: il y avait environ 600 hommes.
16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and the force that was with them took up their quarters in Geba of Benjaminwhile the Philistines camped at Michmash.	16 Saül et son fils Jonathan et la troupe qui était avec eux résidaient à Géba de Benjamin et lesPhilistins campaient à Mikmas.
17 The raiding company sallied out of the Philistine camp in three groups: one group made for Ophrahin the territory of Shual;	17 Le corps de destruction sortit du camp philistin en trois bandes: une bande prit la directiond'Ophra, au pays de Shual,
18 one group made for Beth-Horon; and one group made for the high ground overlooking the Valley ofthe Hyenas, in the direction of the desert.	18 une bande prit la direction de Bet-Horôn et une bande prit la direction de la hauteur quisurplombe la Vallée des Hyènes, vers le désert.
19 There was not a single blacksmith throughout the territory of Israel, the Philistines' reasoning being,'We do not want the Hebrews making swords or spears.'	19 Il n'y avait pas de forgeron dans tout le pays d'Israël, car les Philistins s'étaient dit: "Il faut éviterque les Hébreux ne fabriquent des épées ou des lances."
20 Hence, the Israelites were al in the habit of going down individually to the Philistines to sharpen theirploughshares, axes, mattocks and scythes.	20 Aussi tous les Israélites descendaient chez les Philistins pour reforger chacun son soc, sa hache,son herminette ou sa faucille.
21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel for ploughshares and axes, and one-third for sharpeningmattocks and straightening goads.	21 Le prix était de deux tiers de sicle pour les socs et les haches, d'un tiers de sicle pour aiguiser lesherminettes et redresser les aiguillons.
22 So it was that on the day of the battle, no one in the army with Saul and Jonathan was equipped witheither sword or spear; only Saul and his son Jonathan were so equipped.	22 Aussi arriva-t-il qu'au jour de la bataille, dans l'armée qui était avec Saül et Jonathan, personnen'avait en main ni épée ni lance. Il y en avait cependant pour Saül et pour son fils Jonathan.
23 A Philistine unit set out for the Pass of Michmash.	23 Un poste de Philistins partit pour la passe de Mikmas.
