1 Samuel 13

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Saul was . . . years old when he became king, and reigned over Israel for . . . years.	1 Saúl tenía... años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó... años sobre Israel.
2 Saul selected three thousand men of Israel; two thousand of them were with Saul at Michmash and inthe highlands of Bethel, and one thousand with Jonathan at Geba of Benjamin; the rest of the people Saul senthome, everyone to his tent.	2 Saúl seleccionó a tres mil hombres de Israel: dos mil estaban con él en Micmás y en la montaña de Betel, y mil con Jonatán en Guibeá de Benjamín. Al resto del pueblo lo envió a sus campamentos.
3 Jonathan kil ed the Philistine governor stationed at Gibeah and the Philistines were informed that theHebrews had risen in revolt. Saul had the trumpet sounded throughout the country,	3 Jonatán derrotó al destacamento filisteo apostado en Gueba, y los filisteos se enteraron. Entonces Saúl hizo tocar la trompeta por todo el país, diciendo: «¡Que oigan los hebreos!».
4 and al Israel heard the news, 'Saul has kil ed the Philistine governor, and now Israel has antagonisedthe Philistines.' So all the people ral ied behind Saul at Gilgal.	4 Cuando todo Israel oyó que Saúl había derrotado al destacamento filisteo y que hasta el nombre de Israel causaba repulsión entre los filisteos, el pueblo acudió a la convocatoria de Saúl en Guilgal.
5 The Philistines mustered to make war on Israel, three thousand chariots, six thousand horse and aforce as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and pitched camp at Michmash, to the east ofBeth-Aven.	5 Los filisteos se reunieron para combatir contra Israel: tenían tres mil carros, seis mil guerreros y una tropa numerosa como la arena que está a la orilla del mar. Luego subieron y acamparon en Micmás, al este de Bet Aven.
6 When the Israelites saw that their plight was desperate, being so hard pressed, the people hid incaves, in holes, in crevices, in vaults, in wel s.	6 Al verse en un grave aprieto, porque estaban cercados, los hombres de Israel fueron a esconderse en las cuevas, entre los matorrales, en las peñas, en los huecos y en las cisternas.
7 Some also crossed the Jordan fords into the territory of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal and althe people who followed him were trembling.	7 Y algunos hebreos cruzaron el Jordán, hacia el país de Gad y de Galaad. Saúl estaba todavía en Guilgal, y todo el pueblo temblaba de miedo detrás de él.
8 He waited for seven days, the period fixed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and thearmy, deserting Saul, began dispersing.	8 Así esperó siete días, según el plazo fijado por Samuel. Pero Samuel no llegaba a Guilgal y el pueblo se le comenzó a desbandar.
9 Saul then said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the communion sacrifices.' And he presented the burntoffering.	9 Entonces Saúl dijo: «Tráiganme el holocausto y los sacrificios de comunión», y él mismo ofreció el holocausto.
10 Just as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet andgreet him.	10 Apenas terminó de ofrecer el holocausto, llegó Samuel, y Saúl salió a su encuentro para saludarlo.
11 Samuel said, 'What have you been doing?' Saul replied, 'I saw the army deserting me anddispersing, and you had not come at the time fixed, while the Philistines were mustering at Michmash.	11 Pero Samuel le dijo: «¿Qué has hecho?» Saúl respondió: «Como vi que el pueblo se me desbandaba, que tú no llegabas en el plazo fijado y que los filisteos estaban reunidos en Micmás,
12 So I thought: Now the Philistines are going to fall on me at Gilgal and I have not implored the favourof Yahweh. So I felt obliged to make the burnt offering myself.'	12 pensé: «Ahora los filisteos bajarán a atacarme en Guilgal, y yo no he aplacado el rostro del Señor». Así que me vi obligado a ofrecer el holocausto».
13 Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted like a fool. You have not obeyed the order which Yahweh yourGod gave you. Otherwise, Yahweh would have confirmed your sovereignty over Israel for ever.	13 Entonces Samuel replicó a Saúl: «¡Has obrado neciamente! Si hubieras observado el mandamiento que te dio el Señor, tu Dios, él había afianzado para siempre tu reinado sobre Israel.
14 But now your sovereignty wil not last; Yahweh has discovered a man after his own heart anddesignated him as leader of his people, since you have not carried out what Yahweh ordered you.'	14 Pero ahora tu reino no subsistirá. El Señor se ha buscado un hombre según su corazón y lo ha constituido jefe de su pueblo, porque tú no has observado lo que el Señor te mandó».
15 Samuel then got up and left Gilgal to continue his journey. Those people remaining followed Saul ashe went to join the warriors, and went from Gilgal to Geba of Benjamin. Saul reviewed the force that was withhim; there were about six hundred men.	15 En seguida, Samuel partió de Guilgal.
16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and the force that was with them took up their quarters in Geba of Benjaminwhile the Philistines camped at Michmash.	16 Saúl, su hijo Jonatán y la tropa que estaba con él se apostaron en Gueba de Benjamín, y los filisteos acamparon en Micmás.
17 The raiding company sallied out of the Philistine camp in three groups: one group made for Ophrahin the territory of Shual;	17 Del campamento filisteo salió un cuerpo de asalto dividido en tres grupos: uno tomó la dirección de Ofrá, hacia el país de Sual;
18 one group made for Beth-Horon; and one group made for the high ground overlooking the Valley ofthe Hyenas, in the direction of the desert.	18 otro se dirigió a Bet Jorón, y otro a la altura que domina el valle de las Hienas, hacia el desierto.
19 There was not a single blacksmith throughout the territory of Israel, the Philistines' reasoning being,'We do not want the Hebrews making swords or spears.'	19 No había entonces ningún herrero en Israel, porque los filisteos decían: «Hay que evitar que los hebreos se forjen espadas y lanzas».
20 Hence, the Israelites were al in the habit of going down individually to the Philistines to sharpen theirploughshares, axes, mattocks and scythes.	20 Por eso, todos los israelitas tenían que acudir a los filisteos para reparar sus azadas, sus rejas de arado, sus hachas y sus hoces.
21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel for ploughshares and axes, and one-third for sharpeningmattocks and straightening goads.	21 Había que pagar dos tercios de siclo por las azadas y las rejas de arado, y un tercio de siclo por afilar las hachas y reparar las picanas.
22 So it was that on the day of the battle, no one in the army with Saul and Jonathan was equipped witheither sword or spear; only Saul and his son Jonathan were so equipped.	22 Así, el día de la batalla de Micmás, nadie del ejército que estaba con Saúl y Jonatán tenía en la mano una espada o una lanza. Sólo la tenían Saúl y su hijo Jonatán.
23 A Philistine unit set out for the Pass of Michmash.	23 Un destacamento de los filisteos partió para el paso de Micmás.
