NEW JERUSALEMJERUSALEM
Then I saw an angel come down from heaven with the key of the Abyss in his hand and an enormouschain.1 Puis je vis un Ange descendre du ciel, ayant en main la clef de l'Abîme, ainsi qu'une énormechaîne.
He overpowered the dragon, that primeval serpent which is the devil and Satan, and chained him upfor a thousand years.2 Il maîtrisa le Dragon, l'antique Serpent, - c'est le Diable, Satan, - et l'enchaîna pour milleannées.
He hurled him into the Abyss and shut the entrance and sealed it over him, to make sure he would notlead the nations astray again until the thousand years had passed. At the end of that time he must be released,but only for a short while.3 Il le jeta dans l'Abîme, tira sur lui les verrous, apposa des scellés, afin qu'il cessât de fourvoyerles nations jusqu'à l'achèvement des mille années. Après quoi, il doit être relâché pour un peu de temps.
Then I saw thrones, where they took their seats, and on them was conferred the power to givejudgement. I saw the souls of al who had been beheaded for having witnessed for Jesus and for havingpreached God's word, and those who refused to worship the beast or his statue and would not accept the brand-mark on their foreheads or hands; they came to life, and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.4 Puis je vis des trônes sur lesquels ils s'assirent, et on leur remit le jugement; et aussi les âmesde ceux qui furent décapités pour le témoignage de Jésus et la Parole de Dieu, et tous ceux qui refusèrentd'adorer la Bête et son image, de se faire marquer sur le front ou sur la main; ils reprirent vie et régnèrent avec leChrist mille années.
The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were over; this is the firstresurrection.5 Les autres morts ne purent reprendre vie avant l'achèvement des mille années. C'est lapremière résurrection.
Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection; the second death has no power overthem but they wil be priests of God and of Christ and reign with him for a thousand years.6 Heureux et saint celui qui participe à la première résurrection! La seconde mort n'a pas pouvoirsur eux, mais ils seront prêtres de Dieu et du Christ avec qui ils régneront mille années.
When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison7 Les mille ans écoulés, Satan, relâché de sa prison,
and wil come out to lead astray all the nations in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, andmobilise them for war, his armies being as many as the sands of the sea.8 s'en ira séduire les nations des quatre coins de la terre, Gog et Magog, et les rassembler pour laguerre, aussi nombreux que le sable de la mer;
They came swarming over the entire country and besieged the camp of the saints, which is thebeloved City. But fire rained down on them from heaven and consumed them.9 ils montèrent sur toute l'étendue du pays, puis ils investirent le camp des saints, la Cité bien-aimée. Mais un feu descendit du ciel et les dévora.
Then the devil, who led them astray, was hurled into the lake of fire and sulphur, where the beast andthe false prophet are, and their torture wil not come to an end, day or night, for ever and ever.10 Alors, le diable, leur séducteur, fut jeté dans l'étang de feu et de soufre, y rejoignant la Bête etle faux prophète, et leur supplice durera jour et nuit, pour les siècles des siècles.
Then I saw a great white throne and the One who was sitting on it. In his presence, earth and skyvanished, leaving no trace.11 Puis je vis un trône blanc, très grand, et Celui qui siège dessus. Le ciel et la terre s'enfuirentde devant sa face sans laisser de traces.
I saw the dead, great and smal alike, standing in front of his throne while the books lay open. Andanother book was opened, which is the book of life, and the dead were judged from what was written in thebooks, as their deeds deserved.12 Et je vis les morts, grands et petits, debout devant le trône; on ouvrit des livres, puis un autrelivre, celui de la vie; alors, les morts furent jugés d'après le contenu des livres, chacun selon ses oeuvres.
The sea gave up all the dead who were in it;13 Et la mer rendit les morts qu'elle gardait, la Mort et l'Hadès rendirent les morts qu'ilsgardaient, et chacun fut jugé selon ses oeuvres.
Death and Hades were emptied of the dead that were in them; and every one was judged as hisdeeds deserved. Then Death and Hades were hurled into the burning lake. This burning lake is the seconddeath;14 Alors la Mort et l'Hadès furent jetés dans l'étang de feu - c'est la seconde mort cet étang defeu --
and anybody whose name could not be found written in the book of life was hurled into the burninglake.15 et celui qui ne se trouva pas inscrit dans le livre de vie, on le jeta dans l'étang de feu.
