NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
After this, I saw another angel come down from heaven, with great authority given to him; the earthshone with his glory.1 Post haec vidi alium ange lum descendentem de caelo, habentem potestatemmagnam; et terra illuminata est a claritate eius.
At the top of his voice he shouted, 'Babylon has fal en, Babylon the Great has fallen, and has becomethe haunt of devils and a lodging for every foul spirit and dirty, loathsome bird.2 Et clamavit in forti vocedicens: “ Cecidit, cecidit Babylon magna et facta est habitatio daemoniorum etcustodia omnis spiritus immundi et custodia omnis bestiae immundae et odibilis;
Al the nations have drunk deep of the wine of her prostitution; every king on the earth has prostitutedhimself with her, and every merchant grown rich through her debauchery.'3 quia de vino irae fornicationis eius biberunt omnes gentes, et reges terraecum illa fornicati sunt, et mercatores terrae de virtute deliciarum eius divitesfacti sunt! ”.
Another voice spoke from heaven; I heard it say, 'Come out, my people, away from her, so that you donot share in her crimes and have the same plagues to bear.4 Et audivi aliam vocem de caelo dicentem: “ Exite de illa, populus meus, utne comparticipes sitis peccatorum eius et de plagis eius non accipiatis,
Her sins have reached up to the sky, and God has her crimes in mind: treat her as she has treatedothers.5 quoniam pervenerunt peccata eius usque ad caelum, et recordatus est Deusiniquitatum eius.
She must be paid double the amount she exacted. She is to have a doubly strong cup of her ownmixture.6 Reddite illi, sicut et ipsa reddidit, et duplicate dupliciasecundum opera eius; in poculo, quo miscuit, miscete illi duplum.
Every one of her pomps and orgies is to be matched by a torture or an agony. I am enthroned asqueen, she thinks; I am no widow and wil never know bereavement.7 Quantumglorificavit se et in deliciis fuit, tantum date illi tormentum et luctum. Quiain corde suo dicit: “Sedeo regina et vidua non sum et luctum non videbo”,
For that, in one day, the plagues wil fal on her: disease and mourning and famine. She wil be burnedto the ground. The Lord God who has condemned her is mighty.'8 ideo in una die venient plagae eius, mors et luctus et fames, et ignecomburetur, quia fortis est Dominus Deus, qui iudicavit illam ”.
'There will be mourning and weeping for her by the kings of the earth who have prostituted themselveswith her and held orgies with her. They see the smoke as she burns,9 Et flebunt et plangent se super illam reges terrae, qui cum illa fornicatisunt et in deliciis vixerunt, cum viderint fumum incendii eius,
while they keep at a safe distance through fear of her anguish. They wil say: Mourn, mourn for thisgreat city, Babylon, so powerful a city, in one short hour your doom has come upon you.10 longe stantespropter timorem tormentorum eius, dicentes: “ Vae, vae, civitas illa magna,Babylon, civitas illa fortis, quoniam una hora venit iudicium tuum! ”.
'There wil be weeping and distress over her among al the traders of the earth when no one is left tobuy their cargoes of goods;11 Et negotiatores terrae flent et lugent super illam, quoniam mercem eorum nemoemit amplius:
their stocks of gold and silver, jewels and pearls, linen and purple and silks and scarlet; al thesandalwood, every piece in ivory or fine wood, in bronze or iron or marble;12 mercem auri et argenti et lapidis pretiosi et margaritarum, etbyssi et purpurae et serici et cocci, et omne lignum thyinum et omnia vasaeboris et omnia vasa de ligno pretiosissimo et aeramento et ferro et marmore,
the cinnamon and spices, the myrrh and ointment and incense; wine, oil, flour and corn; their stocksof cattle, sheep, horses and chariots, their slaves and their human cargo.13 et cinnamomum et amomum et odoramenta et unguenta et tus, et vinum et oleum etsimilam et triticum, et iumenta et oves et equorum et raedarum, et mancipiorumet animas hominum.
'Al the fruits you had set your hearts on have failed you; gone for ever, never to return again, is yourlife of magnificence and ease.14 Et fructus tui, desiderium animae, discesserunt a te, etomnia pinguia et clara perierunt a te, et amplius illa iam non invenient.
'The traders who had made a fortune out of her wil be standing at a safe distance through fear of heranguish, mourning and weeping.15 Mercatores horum, qui divites facti sunt ab ea, longe stabunt propter timoremtormentorum eius flentes ac lugentes,
They wil be saying: Mourn, mourn for this great city; for al the linen and purple and scarlet that youwore, for al your finery of gold and jewels and pearls;16 dicentes: “ Vae, vae, civitas illamagna, quae amicta erat byssino et purpura et cocco, et deaurata auro et lapidepretioso et margarita,
your huge riches are al destroyed within a single hour.' Al the captains and seafaring men, sailorsand all those who make a living from the sea kept a safe distance,17 quoniam una hora desolatae sunt tantae divitiae! ”.
Et omnis gubernator et omnis, qui in locum navigat, et nautae et, quotquot mariaoperantur, longe steterunt
watching the smoke as she burned, and crying out, 'Has there ever been a city as great as this!'18 et clamabant, videntes fumum incendii eius, dicentes: “ Quae similis civitati huic magnae? ”.
They threw dust on their heads and said, with tears and groans: 'Mourn, mourn for this great citywhose lavish living has made a fortune for every owner of a sea-going ship, ruined within a single hour.19 Et miserunt pulveremsuper capita sua et clamabant, flentes et lugentes, dicentes: “ Vae, vae, civitas illa magna, in qua divites facti sunt omnes, qui habent naves in mari,de opibus eius, quoniam una hora desolata est!
'Now heaven, celebrate her downfall, and all you saints, apostles and prophets: God has givenjudgement for you against her.'20 Exsulta super eam, caelum, etsancti et apostoli et prophetae, quoniam iudicavit Deus iudicium vestrum deilla! ”.
Then a powerful angel picked up a boulder like a great mil stone, and as he hurled it into the sea, hesaid, 'That is how the great city of Babylon is going to be hurled down, never to be seen again.21 Et sustulit unus angelus fortis lapidem quasi molarem magnum et misit in maredicens: “Impetu sic mittetur Babylon magna illa civitas et ultra iam noninvenietur.
Never again in you will be heard the song of harpists and minstrels, the music of flute and trumpet;never again wil craftsmen of every skill be found in you or the sound of the handmil be heard;22 Et vox citharoedorum et musicorum et tibia canentium et tuba nonaudietur in te amplius, et omnis artifex omnis artis non invenietur in teamplius, et vox molae non audietur in te amplius,
never again wil shine the light of the lamp in you, never again wil be heard in you the voices ofbridegroom and bride. Your traders were the princes of the earth, al the nations were led astray by your sorcery.23 et lux lucernae non lucebittibi amplius, et vox sponsi et sponsae non audietur in te amplius; quiamercatores tui erant magnates terrae, quia in veneficiis tuis erraverunt omnesgentes,
In her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and all the blood that was ever shed on earth.'24 et in ea sanguis prophetarum et sanctorum inventus est et omnium, quiinterfecti sunt in terra! ”.
