1 The Israelites then al turned out and, as one man, the entire community from Dan to Beersheba,including Gilead, assembled in Yahweh's presence at Mizpah.	1 Saíram pois todos os filhos de Israel, e juntaram-se como um só homem na presença do Senhor em Masfa, desde Dan a Rersabée, e até à terra de Galaad;
2 The leaders of the entire people, of al the tribes of Israel, were present at this assembly of God'speople, four hundred thousand trained infantry.	2 todos os chefes do povo e todas as tribos de Israel acudiram à assembleia do povo de Deus, em número de quatrocentos mil combatentes a pé.
3 The Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites then said, 'Tel ushow this crime was committed.'	3 Os filhos de Benjamim não ignoraram que os filhos de Israel tinham subido a Masfa. O Levita, marido da mulher (que fora) morta, foi interrogado de que modo tinha sido cometido tão grande crime.
4 The Levite, husband of the murdered woman, spoke in reply and said,	4 Respondeu: Eu cheguei a Gabaa de Benjamim, com minha mulher, para ali passar a noite.
5 'The men of Gibeah ganged up against me and, during the night, surrounded the house where I waslodging. They intended to murder me. They raped my concubine to death.	5 Os homens daquela cidade cercaram de noite a casa, onde eu estava, querendo matar-me; ultrajaram minha mulher com um incrível furor de lascívia; por último ela morreu.
6 I then took my concubine, cut her up and sent her throughout the entire territory of the heritage ofIsrael, since these men had committed a shameful act, an infamy, in Israel.	6 Eu, tomando-a, a dividi em pedaços, que enviei repartidos a todos os confins da vossa possessão, porque nunca se cometeu tão grande maldade, nem crime tão abominável em Israel.
7 Now, all you Israelites, discuss the matter and give your decision here and now.'	7 Vós todos, ó filhos de Israel, estais aqui presentes; resolvei o que deveis fazer.
8 The whole people stood up as one man and said, 'None of us wil go home, none of us will go back tohis house!	8 Todo o povo, estando em pé, respondeu, como com a voz dum só homem: Não voltaremos às nossas tendas, ninguém entrará em sua casa.
9 And this is what we are now going to do to Gibeah. We shal draw lots	9 De comum acordo faremos isto contra Gabaa;
10 and, throughout the tribes of Israel, select ten men out of a hundred, a hundred out of a thousand anda thousand out of ten thousand to col ect food for the people, so that, on their arrival, the latter may treat Gibeahin Benjamin as this infamy perpetrated in Israel deserves.'	10 escolham-se dentre todas as tribos de Israel dez homens por cada cento, cem por cada mil, e mil por cada dez mil, para que levem víveres ao exército, e possamos combater contra Gabaa de Benjamim, dando-lhe pelo crime a recompensa que merece.
11 Thus, as one man, al the men of Israel mustered against the town.	11 Assim se coligou contra esta cidade todo o Israel, como (se fora) um só homem, com o mesmo espírito e a mesma resolução.
12 The tribes of Israel sent messengers throughout the tribe of Benjamin to say, 'What is this crimewhich has been committed in your territory?	12 Mandaram mensageiros a toda a tribo de Benjamim, para que lhe dissessem: Por que se cometeu entre vós tão detestável maldade?
13 Now, give up these men, these scoundrels, living in Gibeah, so that we can put them to death andwipe out this evil from Israel.' The Benjaminites, however, would not listen to their brother Israelites.	13 Entregai-nos os homens de Gabaa, que cometeram esta atrocidade, para que morram e, assim, se tire o mal de Israel. Porém os Benjamitas não quiseram dar ouvidos à embaixada de seus irmãos, os filhos de Israel,
14 The Benjaminites left their towns and mustered at Gibeah to fight the Israelites.	14 mas juntaram-se em Gabaa de todas as cidades pertencentes à sua tribo, para lhes darem auxílio, e combaterem contra todo o povo de Israel.
15 At the time, a count was made of the Benjaminites from the various towns: there were twenty-sixthousand swordsmen; and the count excluded the inhabitants of Gibeah.	15 E acharam-se da tribo de Benjamim vinte e cinco mil aptos para trazer espada, afora os habitantes de Gabaa,
16 In this great army there were seven hundred first-rate left-handers, every man of whom could sling astone at a hair and not miss it.	16 que eram setecentos homens fortíssimos, que combatiam tanto com a esquerda como com a direita; e eram tão destros em atirar pedras com a funda, que poderiam acertar num cabelo, sem errar o alvo.
17 A count was also held of the men of Israel, excluding Benjamin: there were four hundred thousandmen, al experienced swordsmen.	17 Dos homens de Israel, afora os filhos de Benjamim, contaram-se quatrocentos mil homens de armas, prontos para combater.
18 They moved off, up to Bethel, to consult God. The Israelites put the question, 'Which of us is to gofirst into battle against the Benjaminites?' And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to go first.'	18 (Os filhos de Israel), levantando-se, foram à casa de Deus, isto é, a Silo, e consultaram o Senhor: Quem há-de ser no nosso exército o general da batalha contra os filhos de Benjamim? O Senhor respondeu-lhes: (Da tribo de) Judá seja o vosso general.
19 In the morning, the Israelites moved off and pitched their camp over against Gibeah.	19 Logo os filhos de Israel, marchando ao amanhecer, acamparam junto de Gabaa.
20 The men of Israel advanced to do battle with Benjamin; they drew up their battle line in front ofGibeah.	20 Avançando a combater contra Benjamim, começaram a situar a cidade.
21 But the Benjaminites sal ied out from Gibeah and that day massacred twenty-two thousand Israelites.	21 Então os filhos de Benjamim, tendo saído de Gabaa, mataram naquele dia vinte e dois mil homens dos filhos de Israel.
22 The army of the men of Israel then took fresh heart and again drew up their battle line in the sameplace as the day before.	22 Os filhos de Israel, confiando nas suas forças e no seu número, puseram-se novamente em batalha no mesmo lugar, onde primeiro tinham combatido.
23 The Israelites went and wept before Yahweh until evening; they then consulted Yahweh; they asked,'Shal we join battle again with the sons of our brother Benjamin?' Yahweh replied, 'March against him!'	23 Antes, porém, subiram e foram chorar até a noite diante do Senhor, e consultaram-no, dizendo: Devemos continuar ainda a pelejar contra os filhos de Benjamin, nossos irmãos, ou não? O Senhor respondeu-lhes: Ide contra eles.
24 This second day, the Israelites advanced against the Benjaminites,	24 Ao outro dia, tendo marchado os filhos de Israel para combater contra os filhos de Benjamim,
25 and, this second day, Benjamin sallied out from Gibeah to meet them and massacred anothereighteen thousand Israelites, al experienced swordsmen.	25 os filhos de Benjamim saíram com ímpeto das portas de Gabaa ao seu encontro, e fizeram neles tão grande mortandade, que derrubaram dezoito mil guerreiros.
26 Then al the Israelites and the whole people went off to Bethel; they wept and sat in Yahweh'spresence; they fasted all day till the evening and presented burnt offerings and communion sacrifices beforeYahweh.	26 Pelo que todos os filhos de Israel foram à casa de Deus e, sentados, choravam diante do Senhor; jejuaram aquele dia, até à tarde, ofereceram-lhe holocaustos e vitimas pacíficas,
27 The Israelites then consulted Yahweh. In those days, the ark of the covenant of God was there,	27 e consultaram-no. Naquele tempo a arca da aliança de Deus estava lá,
28 and Phinehas son of Eleazer, son of Aaron was its minister at the time. They said, 'Ought I to go intobattle against the sons of my brother Benjamin again, or should I stop?' Yahweh replied, 'March! For tomorrow Ishall deliver him into your hands.'	28 e Finéas, filho de Eleázaro, filho de Aarão, presidia à casa (de Deus). Consultaram pois o Senhor: Devemos ainda sair a combater contra os filhos de Benjamim, nossos irmãos, ou desistir? O Senhor disse-lhes: Saí, porque amanhã eu os entregarei nas vossas mãos.
29 Israel then positioned troops in ambush al round Gibeah.	29 Os filhos de Israel puseram emboscadas à roda da cidade de Gabaa,
30 On the third day the Israelites marched against the Benjaminites and, as before, drew up their line infront of Gibeah.	30 e, terceira vez, como da primeira e segunda, fizeram avançar o seu exército contra Benjamim.
31 The Benjaminites sal ied out to engage the people and let themselves be drawn away from the town.As before, they began by kil ing those of the people who were on the roads, one of which runs up to Bethel, andthe other to Gibeah through open country: some thirty men of Israel.	31 Os filhos de Benjamim sairam também ousadamente da cidade e perseguiram por longo espaço os seus inimigos que (propositadamente) fugiam ; desta sorte feriram alguns deles, como no primeiro e segundo dia, e mataram e deixaram estendidos por terra uns trinta homens que fugiam por duas estradas, uma das quais ia a Betel, e outra a Gabaa.
32 The Benjaminites thought, 'We have beaten them, as we did the first time,' but the Israelites haddecided, 'We shal run away and draw them away from the town along the roads.'	32 Os filhos de Benjamim julgavam derrotá-los como de costume. Todavia eles, fingindo com arte a fuga, tiveram em mira afastá-los da cidade e levá-los com simulada fuga às sobreditas estradas.
33 All the Israelites then retreated and reformed at Baal-Tamar, while the Israelite troops in ambushsurged from their positions to the west of Gibeah.	33 Então, saindo todos os filhos de Israel dos seus postos, ordenaram-se em batalha no lugar chamado Baaltamar. Também os que estavam emboscados ao redor da cidade, começaram a deixar-se ver, pouco a pouco,
34 Ten thousand picked men, chosen from the whole of Israel, launched their attack on Gibeah. Thebattle was fierce; and the others knew nothing of the disaster impending.	34 e a avançar pela parte ocidental da cidade. Além disto, outros dez mil homens (escolhidos) de todo o Israel provocavam os moradores da cidade para o combate. Tornou-se rude a batalha contra os filhos de Benjamim, porque eles não entenderam que de toda a parte lhes estava iminente a morte.
35 Yahweh defeated Benjamin before Israel and that day the Israelites kil ed twenty-five thousand onehundred men of Benjamin, al of them trained swordsmen.	35 O Senhor destruiu-os à vista dos filhos de Israel, os quais naquele dia mataram deles vinte e cinco mil e cem homens, todos guerreiros e homens de armas.
36 The Benjaminites saw that they were beaten. The Israelites had given ground to Benjamin, since theywere relying on the ambush which they had positioned close to Gibeah.	36 Os filhos de Benjamim, vendo que eram inferiores, começaram a fugir. Os filhos de Israel, observando isto, deram-lhe lugar para fugir, a fim de que fossem cair nas emboscadas que tinham posto junto da cidade.
37 The troops in ambush threw themselves against Gibeah at top speed; fanning out, they put the wholetown to the sword.	37 Saindo então de repente (os filhos de Israel) dos seus esconderijos e tendo matado os que fugiam, entraram na cidade e passaram-na ao fio da Espada.
38 Now it had been agreed between the Israelites and those of the ambush that the latter should raise asmoke signal from the town,	38 Ora os filhos de Israel tinham dado por sinal aos que tinham posto nas emboscadas, que, quando tomassem a cidade acendessem fogo, para que, elevando-se ao alto o fumo, isso servisse de aviso de estar tomada a cidade.
39 whereupon the Israelites in the thick of the battle would turn about. Benjamin began by kil ing some ofthe Israelites, about thirty men, and thought, 'We have certainly beaten them, as we did in the first battle.'	39 Ao ver o fumo, os filhos de Israel simularam a fuga. Os filhos de Benjamim, julgando que os de Israel fugiam, foram-nos perseguindo com mais instância, depois de lhes terem morto trinta homens do seu exército.
40 But the signal, a column of smoke, began to rise from the town, and the Benjaminites looking backsaw the whole town going up in flames to the sky.	40 Entretanto ia subindo da cidade como uma coluna de fumo; os Benjamitas, olhando para trás, viram que a cidade estava tomada e que as chamas subiam para o alto.
41 The Israelites then turned about, and the Benjaminites were seized with terror, for they saw thatdisaster had struck them.	41 Os Israelitas, que antes simulavam fugir, voltando o rosto, resistiam com mais força. Os filhos de Benjamim, vendo isto, puseram-se em fuga
42 They broke before the Israelite onslaught and made for the desert, but the fighters pressed themhard, while the others coming out of the town took and slaughtered them from the rear.	42 e começaram a seguir o caminho do deserto, perseguidos, ainda até lá, pelos inimigos. Além disso, os que tinham incendiado a cidade sairam-lhes ao encontro.
43 They hemmed in the Benjaminites, pursued them relentlessly, crushing them opposite Gibeah on theeast.	43 Deste modo sucedeu serem destroçados por uma e outra parte pelos inimigos, ficando esmagados até à parte oriental da cidade de Gabaa.
44 Of Benjamin, eighteen thousand men fel , al of them brave men.	44 Os mortos, naquele lugar, foram dezoito mil homens, todos guerreiros valentíssimos.
45 They then turned tail and fled into the desert, towards the Rock of Rimmon. Five thousand of themwere picked off on the roads, and the rest were relentlessly pursued as far as Gideon, two thousand of thembeing kil ed.	45 Vendo isto os que tinham ficado de Benjamim, fugiram para o deserto e encaminharam-se para o rochedo chamado Remon. Também nesta fuga, errando por um e outro lugar, tomando diversas direcções, foram mortos (pelos filhos de Israel) cinco mil homens. Passando eles mais adiante, (os filhos de Israel) perseguiram-nos e mataram ainda mais dois mil.
46 The total number of Benjaminites who fel that day was twenty-five thousand swordsmen, al of thembrave men.	46 Assim aconteceu que todos os que ficaram mortos da tribo de Benjamim em diversos lugares, foram vinte e cinco mil homens combatentes, destríssimos para a guerra.
47 Six hundred men, however, turned tail and escaped into the desert, to the Rock of Rimmon, andthere they stayed for four months.	47 De toda a gente de Benjamim ficaram seiscentos homens, que puderam escapar e fugir para o deserto; aí detiveram-se durante quatro meses, no rochedo de Remon.
48 The men of Israel then went back to the Benjaminites, and put them to the sword-people, livestockand everything else that came their way in the town. And they fired all the towns involved.	48 Os filhos de Israel, tendo voltado, passaram ao fio da espada tudo o que restava na cidade, desde os homens até aos animais, a tudo o que encontraram. Todas as cidades e aldeias de Benjamim foram consumidas pelas chamas vorazes.
