1 The Israelites then al turned out and, as one man, the entire community from Dan to Beersheba,including Gilead, assembled in Yahweh's presence at Mizpah.	1 Tous les Israélites sortirent de chez eux, depuis Dan jusqu’à Bersabée, et la communauté se rassembla comme un seul homme auprès de Yahvé à Mispa. Même les gens de Galaad étaient là.
2 The leaders of the entire people, of al the tribes of Israel, were present at this assembly of God'speople, four hundred thousand trained infantry.	2 Les chefs du peuple et toutes les tribus d’Israël participaient à cette assemblée du peuple de Dieu: c’étaient 400 000 hommes sachant manier l’épée.
3 The Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites then said, 'Tel ushow this crime was committed.'	3 Les fils de Benjamin apprirent que les Israélites étaient montés à Mispa. Les Israélites dirent: “Racontez-nous comment s’est commis ce crime?”
4 The Levite, husband of the murdered woman, spoke in reply and said,	4 Alors le Lévite, le mari de la femme assassinée prit la parole et dit: “Je suis entré à Guibéa de Benjamin avec ma concubine pour y passer la nuit,
5 'The men of Gibeah ganged up against me and, during the night, surrounded the house where I waslodging. They intended to murder me. They raped my concubine to death.	5 et les propriétaires de Guibéa ont décidé de me faire du tort. Durant toute la nuit ils ont cerné la maison où je me trouvais avec l’intention de me tuer; ils ont fait violence à ma concubine de telle façon qu’elle en est morte.
6 I then took my concubine, cut her up and sent her throughout the entire territory of the heritage ofIsrael, since these men had committed a shameful act, an infamy, in Israel.	6 Alors j’ai pris ma concubine et je l’ai coupée en morceaux, je les ai envoyés par toutes les terres qui appartiennent à Israël, car ils ont fait quelque chose d’ignoble en Israël.
7 Now, all you Israelites, discuss the matter and give your decision here and now.'	7 Puisque vous êtes tous venus ici, tout Israël, traitez l’affaire et décidez ici-même.”
8 The whole people stood up as one man and said, 'None of us wil go home, none of us will go back tohis house!	8 Tout le peuple se leva comme un seul homme et dit: “Que nul d’entre nous ne se retire sous sa tente, que personne ne retourne à sa maison!
9 And this is what we are now going to do to Gibeah. We shal draw lots	9 Voici comment nous allons procéder avec Guibéa. Nous allons tirer au sort
10 and, throughout the tribes of Israel, select ten men out of a hundred, a hundred out of a thousand anda thousand out of ten thousand to col ect food for the people, so that, on their arrival, the latter may treat Gibeahin Benjamin as this infamy perpetrated in Israel deserves.'	10 dix hommes sur cent dans toutes les tribus d’Israël, ou cent sur mille, ou mille sur dix mille. Ils iront chercher des vivres pour ceux qui partiront à Guibéa de Benjamin afin de la traiter comme elle le mérite, après le crime qu’elle a commis en Israël.”
11 Thus, as one man, al the men of Israel mustered against the town.	11 C’est ainsi que les Israélites se rassemblèrent comme un seul homme face à la ville.
12 The tribes of Israel sent messengers throughout the tribe of Benjamin to say, 'What is this crimewhich has been committed in your territory?	12 Les tribus d’Israël envoyèrent des hommes dans tout le territoire de Benjamin pour dire: “Quel est ce crime que l’on a commis chez vous?
13 Now, give up these men, these scoundrels, living in Gibeah, so that we can put them to death andwipe out this evil from Israel.' The Benjaminites, however, would not listen to their brother Israelites.	13 Livrez-nous donc ces hommes, ces criminels de Guibéa, nous les mettrons à mort et nous éliminerons d’Israël le mal.” Mais les gens de Benjamin ne voulurent pas écouter la voix de leurs frères Israélites.
14 The Benjaminites left their towns and mustered at Gibeah to fight the Israelites.	14 Les Benjaminites arrivèrent de leurs villes et se rassemblèrent à Guibéa pour combattre les Israélites.
15 At the time, a count was made of the Benjaminites from the various towns: there were twenty-sixthousand swordsmen; and the count excluded the inhabitants of Gibeah.	15 On recensa ce jour-là les Benjaminites venus de leurs villes: 26 000 hommes de guerre. On les recensa à part des habitants de Guibéa.
16 In this great army there were seven hundred first-rate left-handers, every man of whom could sling astone at a hair and not miss it.	16 Il y avait dans cette armée 700 hommes d’élite, des gauchers capables avec leur fronde de lancer une pierre au but sans le manquer d’un cheveu.
17 A count was also held of the men of Israel, excluding Benjamin: there were four hundred thousandmen, al experienced swordsmen.	17 On recensa aussi les Israélites sans les gens de Benjamin: 400 000 hommes sachant manier l’épée, tous des hommes de guerre.
18 They moved off, up to Bethel, to consult God. The Israelites put the question, 'Which of us is to gofirst into battle against the Benjaminites?' And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to go first.'	18 Ils se levèrent et montèrent à Béthel pour consulter Dieu. Les Israélites demandèrent: “Qui d’entre nous montera le premier à l’attaque contre les gens de Benjamin?” Yahvé répondit: “Juda sera le premier.”
19 In the morning, the Israelites moved off and pitched their camp over against Gibeah.	19 Les Israélites se levèrent de bon matin et établirent leur camp face à Guibéa.
20 The men of Israel advanced to do battle with Benjamin; they drew up their battle line in front ofGibeah.	20 Ceux d’Israël prirent l’initiative et ils se rangèrent pour attaquer ceux de Benjamin qui étaient à Guibéa.
21 But the Benjaminites sal ied out from Gibeah and that day massacred twenty-two thousand Israelites.	21 Les gens de Benjamin sortirent alors de Guibéa et massacrèrent en ce jour-là 22 000 hommes d’Israël
22 The army of the men of Israel then took fresh heart and again drew up their battle line in the sameplace as the day before.	22 20:23 Les Israélites montèrent alors à Béthel et ils pleurèrent devant Yahvé jusqu’au soir. Puis ils consultèrent Yahvé en ces termes: “Devons-nous recommencer à combattre nos frères de Benjamin?” Yahvé répondit: “Attaquez-les!”
23 The Israelites went and wept before Yahweh until evening; they then consulted Yahweh; they asked,'Shal we join battle again with the sons of our brother Benjamin?' Yahweh replied, 'March against him!'	23 20:22 L’armée d’Israël reprit courage et de nouveau elle se rangea au même endroit que le premier jour.
24 This second day, the Israelites advanced against the Benjaminites,	24 Les Israélites attaquèrent donc les Benjaminites,
25 and, this second day, Benjamin sallied out from Gibeah to meet them and massacred anothereighteen thousand Israelites, al experienced swordsmen.	25 mais en ce second jour encore, ceux de Benjamin sortirent de Guibéa à leur rencontre et tuèrent chez les Israélites 18 000 hommes sachant manier l’épée.
26 Then al the Israelites and the whole people went off to Bethel; they wept and sat in Yahweh'spresence; they fasted all day till the evening and presented burnt offerings and communion sacrifices beforeYahweh.	26 Tous les Israélites et tout le peuple montèrent de nouveau à Béthel. Là, assis devant Yahvé, ils pleurèrent et jeûnèrent ce jour-là jusqu’au soir, puis ils offrirent à Yahvé des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion.
27 The Israelites then consulted Yahweh. In those days, the ark of the covenant of God was there,	27 Les Israélites consultèrent Yahvé ce jour-là: en effet l’Arche de l’Alliance de Dieu se trouvait en ce lieu,
28 and Phinehas son of Eleazer, son of Aaron was its minister at the time. They said, 'Ought I to go intobattle against the sons of my brother Benjamin again, or should I stop?' Yahweh replied, 'March! For tomorrow Ishall deliver him into your hands.'	28 et Pinhas, fils d’Éléazar, fils d’Aaron, en avait la charge. Les Israélites demandèrent: “Devons-nous une nouvelle fois attaquer nos frères de Benjamin, ou devons-nous renoncer?” Yahvé répondit: “Montez, car demain je les livrerai entre vos mains.”
29 Israel then positioned troops in ambush al round Gibeah.	29 Israël plaça des hommes en embuscade autour de Guibéa.
30 On the third day the Israelites marched against the Benjaminites and, as before, drew up their line infront of Gibeah.	30 Quand les Israélites montèrent à l’attaque le troisième jour contre ceux de Benjamin, ils se rangèrent devant Guibéa comme les autres fois.
31 The Benjaminites sal ied out to engage the people and let themselves be drawn away from the town.As before, they began by kil ing those of the people who were on the roads, one of which runs up to Bethel, andthe other to Gibeah through open country: some thirty men of Israel.	31 Les Benjaminites firent alors une sortie pour rencontrer l’armée, et ils s’éloignèrent de la ville. Comme les autres fois ils commencèrent à massacrer des hommes de l’armée d’Israël (ils en tuèrent environ 30 sur les routes qui vont à Béthel et à Guibéa par la campagne).
32 The Benjaminites thought, 'We have beaten them, as we did the first time,' but the Israelites haddecided, 'We shal run away and draw them away from the town along the roads.'	32 Les Benjaminites pensaient: “Les voilà battus devant nous comme les autres fois.” Mais les Israélites s’étaient dit: “Nous prendrons la fuite pour les attirer sur les routes loin de la ville.”
33 All the Israelites then retreated and reformed at Baal-Tamar, while the Israelite troops in ambushsurged from their positions to the west of Gibeah.	33 Tous les Israélites se regroupèrent et firent face à Baal-Tamar, au moment même où ceux de l’embuscade débouchaient du lieu où ils s’étaient postés à l’ouest de Guéba.
34 Ten thousand picked men, chosen from the whole of Israel, launched their attack on Gibeah. Thebattle was fierce; and the others knew nothing of the disaster impending.	34 C’étaient 10 000 hommes d’élite de l’armée d’Israël qui arrivaient sur Guibéa. La bataille fut rude et les Benjaminites ne savaient pas que le malheur allait les frapper.
35 Yahweh defeated Benjamin before Israel and that day the Israelites kil ed twenty-five thousand onehundred men of Benjamin, al of them trained swordsmen.	35 Car Yahvé donna la défaite à Benjamin devant Israël et, ce jour-là, les Israélites tuèrent 25 100 hommes de Benjamin, tous habiles à manier l’épée.
36 The Benjaminites saw that they were beaten. The Israelites had given ground to Benjamin, since theywere relying on the ambush which they had positioned close to Gibeah.	36 Les Benjaminites virent qu’ils étaient battus. Les Israélites ne leur avaient cédé du terrain que parce qu’ils comptaient sur l’embuscade qu’ils avaient placée contre Guibéa.
37 The troops in ambush threw themselves against Gibeah at top speed; fanning out, they put the wholetown to the sword.	37 En effet, les gens de l’embuscade se jetèrent sur Guibéa, se déployèrent et passèrent toute la ville au fil de l’épée.
38 Now it had been agreed between the Israelites and those of the ambush that the latter should raise asmoke signal from the town,	38 Les Israélites avaient convenu d’un signe avec ceux de l’embuscade: ces derniers feraient monter de la ville un nuage de fumée.
39 whereupon the Israelites in the thick of the battle would turn about. Benjamin began by kil ing some ofthe Israelites, about thirty men, and thought, 'We have certainly beaten them, as we did in the first battle.'	39 Quand les Benjaminites leur avaient déjà tué une trentaine d’hommes et se disaient: “Les voilà bien battus devant nous comme la dernière fois”, à ce moment même les Israélites se retournèrent contre eux.
40 But the signal, a column of smoke, began to rise from the town, and the Benjaminites looking backsaw the whole town going up in flames to the sky.	40 Le signal de fumée s’élevait de la ville et, en se retournant, Benjamin aperçut la lueur qui montait vers les cieux: toute la ville était en flammes.
41 The Israelites then turned about, and the Benjaminites were seized with terror, for they saw thatdisaster had struck them.	41 Les hommes d’Israël attaquaient, et ce fut l’épouvante chez les Benjaminites; ils comprirent que le malheur tombait sur eux.
42 They broke before the Israelite onslaught and made for the desert, but the fighters pressed themhard, while the others coming out of the town took and slaughtered them from the rear.	42 Comme ils tentaient de s’enfuir devant les Israélites par les chemins du désert, la bataille les y rejoignit et ceux qui descendaient de la ville les massacrèrent.
43 They hemmed in the Benjaminites, pursued them relentlessly, crushing them opposite Gibeah on theeast.	43 Benjamin fut cerné, harcelé, écrasé jusqu’à l’orient de Guibéa.
44 Of Benjamin, eighteen thousand men fel , al of them brave men.	44 18 000 hommes de Benjamin tombèrent, tous de courageux guerriers.
45 They then turned tail and fled into the desert, towards the Rock of Rimmon. Five thousand of themwere picked off on the roads, and the rest were relentlessly pursued as far as Gideon, two thousand of thembeing kil ed.	45 Ceux qui purent s’échapper gagnèrent le désert vers le Rocher-de-Rimon. On en tua 5 000 sur les routes et 2 000 parmi ceux que l’on poursuivit jusqu’à Guidéon.
46 The total number of Benjaminites who fel that day was twenty-five thousand swordsmen, al of thembrave men.	46 Le total des gens de Benjamin qui tombèrent ce jour-là, fut de 25 000 hommes sachant manier l’épée, tous de courageux guerriers.
47 Six hundred men, however, turned tail and escaped into the desert, to the Rock of Rimmon, andthere they stayed for four months.	47 Ceux qui avaient pu s’échapper et qui s’étaient enfuis au désert vers le Rocher-de-Rimon y restèrent pendant quatre mois, ils étaient 600.
48 The men of Israel then went back to the Benjaminites, and put them to the sword-people, livestockand everything else that came their way in the town. And they fired all the towns involved.	48 Quand les Israélites se retournèrent contre le peuple de Benjamin, ils passèrent tout au fil de l’épée: la ville, les hommes, le bétail et tout ce qui s’y trouvait. Ils mirent ensuite le feu à toutes les villes qu’ils rencontraient.
