NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 The Israelites then al turned out and, as one man, the entire community from Dan to Beersheba,including Gilead, assembled in Yahweh's presence at Mizpah.	1 Tous les Israélites sortirent donc, et, comme un seul homme, toute la communauté se réunit depuisDan jusqu'à Bersabée et le pays de Galaad, auprès de Yahvé à Miçpa.
2 The leaders of the entire people, of al the tribes of Israel, were present at this assembly of God'speople, four hundred thousand trained infantry.	2 Les chefs de tout le peuple, toutes les tribus d'Israël assistèrent à l'assemblée du peuple de Dieu,400.000 hommes de pied, sachant tirer l'épée.
3 The Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites then said, 'Tel ushow this crime was committed.'	3 Les Benjaminites apprirent que les Israélites étaient montés à Miçpa... Les Israélites dirent alors:"Racontez-nous comment ce crime a été commis!"
4 The Levite, husband of the murdered woman, spoke in reply and said,	4 Le lévite, le mari de la femme qui avait été tuée, prit la parole et dit: "J'étais venu avec ma concubineà Gibéa de Benjamin pour y passer la nuit.
5 'The men of Gibeah ganged up against me and, during the night, surrounded the house where I waslodging. They intended to murder me. They raped my concubine to death.	5 Les habitants de Gibéa se sont soulevés contre moi et, pendant la nuit, ils ont entouré la maison oùj'étais; moi, ils voulaient me tuer et, quant à ma concubine, ils lui ont fait violence au point qu'elle en est morte.
6 I then took my concubine, cut her up and sent her throughout the entire territory of the heritage ofIsrael, since these men had committed a shameful act, an infamy, in Israel.	6 J'ai pris alors ma concubine, je l'ai coupée en morceaux et je l'ai envoyée dans toute l'étendue del'héritage d'Israël, car ils ont commis une chose honteuse et une infamie en Israël.
7 Now, all you Israelites, discuss the matter and give your decision here and now.'	7 Vous voici tous ici, Israélites. Consultez-vous et ici même prenez une décision."
8 The whole people stood up as one man and said, 'None of us wil go home, none of us will go back tohis house!	8 Tout le peuple se leva comme un seul homme en disant: "Personne d'entre nous ne regagnera satente, personne d'entre nous ne retournera dans sa maison!
9 And this is what we are now going to do to Gibeah. We shal draw lots	9 Maintenant, voici ce que nous allons faire contre Gibéa. Nous tirerons au sort,
10 and, throughout the tribes of Israel, select ten men out of a hundred, a hundred out of a thousand anda thousand out of ten thousand to col ect food for the people, so that, on their arrival, the latter may treat Gibeahin Benjamin as this infamy perpetrated in Israel deserves.'	10 et nous prendrons dans toutes les tribus d'Israël dix hommes sur cent, cent sur mille et mille sur10.000, ils chercheront des vivres pour le peuple, pour que dès leur arrivée, celui-ci traite Gibéa de Benjaminselon l'infamie qu'elle a commise en Israël."
11 Thus, as one man, al the men of Israel mustered against the town.	11 Ainsi s'assemblèrent contre la ville tous les gens d'Israël, unis comme un seul homme.
12 The tribes of Israel sent messengers throughout the tribe of Benjamin to say, 'What is this crimewhich has been committed in your territory?	12 Les tribus d'Israël envoyèrent des émissaires dans toute la tribu de Benjamin pour dire: "Quel est cecrime qui a été commis parmi vous?
13 Now, give up these men, these scoundrels, living in Gibeah, so that we can put them to death andwipe out this evil from Israel.' The Benjaminites, however, would not listen to their brother Israelites.	13 Maintenant, livrez ces hommes, ces vauriens, qui sont à Gibéa, pour que nous les mettions à mort etque nous fassions disparaître le mal du milieu d'Israël." Mais les Benjaminites ne voulurent pas écouter leursfrères les Israélites.
14 The Benjaminites left their towns and mustered at Gibeah to fight the Israelites.	14 Les Benjaminites, quittant leurs villes, s'assemblèrent à Gibéa pour combattre les Israélites.
15 At the time, a count was made of the Benjaminites from the various towns: there were twenty-sixthousand swordsmen; and the count excluded the inhabitants of Gibeah.	15 En ce jour-là, on dénombra les Benjaminites venus des diverses villes, ils étaient 26.000 hommessachant tirer l'épée; c'est à part des habitants de Gibéa qu'ils furent dénombrés.
16 In this great army there were seven hundred first-rate left-handers, every man of whom could sling astone at a hair and not miss it.	16 Dans toute cette armée, il y avait 700 hommes d'élite gauchers. Tous ceux-ci, avec la pierre de leurfronde, étaient capables de viser un cheveu sans le manquer.
17 A count was also held of the men of Israel, excluding Benjamin: there were four hundred thousandmen, al experienced swordsmen.	17 Les gens d'Israël furent également dénombrés, sans compter Benjamin; ils étaient 400.000, sachanttirer l'épée, tous gens de guerre.
18 They moved off, up to Bethel, to consult God. The Israelites put the question, 'Which of us is to gofirst into battle against the Benjaminites?' And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to go first.'	18 Ils se mirent en marche pour monter à Béthel, pour consulter Dieu: "Qui de nous montera lepremier au combat contre les Benjaminites?" Demandèrent les Israélites. Et Yahvé répondit: "C'est Juda quimontera le premier."
19 In the morning, the Israelites moved off and pitched their camp over against Gibeah.	19 Au matin les Israélites se mirent en marche et ils dressèrent leur camp en face de Gibéa.
20 The men of Israel advanced to do battle with Benjamin; they drew up their battle line in front ofGibeah.	20 Les gens d'Israël s'avancèrent au combat contre Benjamin, ils se rangèrent en bataille en face deGibéa.
21 But the Benjaminites sal ied out from Gibeah and that day massacred twenty-two thousand Israelites.	21 Mais les Benjaminites sortirent de Gibéa et, ce jour-là, ils massacrèrent 22.000 hommes d'Israël.
22 The army of the men of Israel then took fresh heart and again drew up their battle line in the sameplace as the day before.	22 Alors l'armée des gens d'Israël reprit courage et de nouveau se rangea en bataille au même endroitque le premier jour.
23 The Israelites went and wept before Yahweh until evening; they then consulted Yahweh; they asked,'Shal we join battle again with the sons of our brother Benjamin?' Yahweh replied, 'March against him!'	23 Les Israélites vinrent pleurer devant Yahvé jusqu'au soir, puis ils consultèrent Yahvé en disant:"Dois-je encore engager le combat contre les fils de Benjamin mon frère?" Et Yahvé répondit: "Marchez contrelui!"
24 This second day, the Israelites advanced against the Benjaminites,	24 Le second jour les Israélites s'approchèrent donc des Benjaminites,
25 and, this second day, Benjamin sallied out from Gibeah to meet them and massacred anothereighteen thousand Israelites, al experienced swordsmen.	25 mais, en cette seconde journée, Benjamin sortit de Gibéa à leur rencontre et il massacra encore18.000 hommes des Israélites; c'étaient tous des guerriers sachant tirer l'épée.
26 Then al the Israelites and the whole people went off to Bethel; they wept and sat in Yahweh'spresence; they fasted all day till the evening and presented burnt offerings and communion sacrifices beforeYahweh.	26 Alors tous les Israélites et tout le peuple s'en vinrent à Béthel, ils pleurèrent, ils s'assirent là devantYahvé, ils jeûnèrent toute la journée jusqu'au soir et ils offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communiondevant Yahvé;
27 The Israelites then consulted Yahweh. In those days, the ark of the covenant of God was there,	27 puis les Israélites consultèrent Yahvé. -- L'arche de l'alliance de Dieu se trouvait alors en cet endroit
28 and Phinehas son of Eleazer, son of Aaron was its minister at the time. They said, 'Ought I to go intobattle against the sons of my brother Benjamin again, or should I stop?' Yahweh replied, 'March! For tomorrow Ishall deliver him into your hands.'	28 et Pinhas, fils d'Eléazar, fils d'Aaron, en ce temps-là, la desservait. -- Ils dirent: "Dois-je sortirencore pour combattre les fils de Benjamin mon frère, ou bien dois-je cesser?" Et Yahvé répondit: "Marchez, cardemain, je le livrerai entre vos mains."
29 Israel then positioned troops in ambush al round Gibeah.	29 Alors Israël plaça des troupes en embuscade tout autour de Gibéa.
30 On the third day the Israelites marched against the Benjaminites and, as before, drew up their line infront of Gibeah.	30 Le troisième jour, les Israélites marchèrent contre les Benjaminites, et comme les autres fois, ils serangèrent en bataille en face de Gibéa.
31 The Benjaminites sal ied out to engage the people and let themselves be drawn away from the town.As before, they began by kil ing those of the people who were on the roads, one of which runs up to Bethel, andthe other to Gibeah through open country: some thirty men of Israel.	31 Les Benjaminites sortirent à la rencontre du peuple et se laissèrent attirer loin de la ville. Ilscommencèrent comme les autres fois à tuer du monde parmi le peuple, sur les chemins qui montent, l'un à Béthelet l'autre à Gibéa par la campagne: une trentaine d'hommes d'Israël.
32 The Benjaminites thought, 'We have beaten them, as we did the first time,' but the Israelites haddecided, 'We shal run away and draw them away from the town along the roads.'	32 Les Benjaminites se dirent: "Les voilà battus devant nous comme la première fois", mais lesIsraélites s'étaient dit: "Nous allons fuir et nous les attirerons loin de la ville sur les chemins."
33 All the Israelites then retreated and reformed at Baal-Tamar, while the Israelite troops in ambushsurged from their positions to the west of Gibeah.	33 Alors tous les hommes d'Israël quittèrent leur position et se rangèrent à Baal-Tamar, tandis quel'embuscade d'Israël surgit de sa position, à l'ouest de Géba.
34 Ten thousand picked men, chosen from the whole of Israel, launched their attack on Gibeah. Thebattle was fierce; and the others knew nothing of the disaster impending.	34 10.000 hommes d'élite, choisis dans tout Israël, parvinrent en face de Gibéa; le combat était acharnéet les autres ne se doutaient pas du malheur qui les frappait.
35 Yahweh defeated Benjamin before Israel and that day the Israelites kil ed twenty-five thousand onehundred men of Benjamin, al of them trained swordsmen.	35 Yahvé battit Benjamin devant Israël et, en ce jour, les Israélites tuèrent à Benjamin 25.100 hommes,tous sachant tirer l'épée.
36 The Benjaminites saw that they were beaten. The Israelites had given ground to Benjamin, since theywere relying on the ambush which they had positioned close to Gibeah.	36 Les Benjaminites virent qu'ils étaient battus -- Les gens d'Israël cédèrent du terrain à Benjaminparce qu'ils comptaient sur l'embuscade qu'ils avaient placée contre Gibéa.
37 The troops in ambush threw themselves against Gibeah at top speed; fanning out, they put the wholetown to the sword.	37 Ceux de l'embuscade se hâtèrent de s'élancer contre Gibéa; ils se déployèrent et passèrent toute laville au fil de l'épée.
38 Now it had been agreed between the Israelites and those of the ambush that the latter should raise asmoke signal from the town,	38 Or il y avait cette convention entre les gens d'Israël et ceux de l'embuscade: ceux-ci devaient, enguise de signal, faire monter de la ville une fumée;
39 whereupon the Israelites in the thick of the battle would turn about. Benjamin began by kil ing some ofthe Israelites, about thirty men, and thought, 'We have certainly beaten them, as we did in the first battle.'	39 alors les gens d'Israël engagés dans le combat feraient volte-face. Benjamin commença par tuer dumonde aux Israélites, une trentaine d'hommes. "Certainement les voilà encore battus devant nous, se disait-il,comme dans le premier combat."
40 But the signal, a column of smoke, began to rise from the town, and the Benjaminites looking backsaw the whole town going up in flames to the sky.	40 Mais le signal, une colonne de fumée, commença à s'élever de la ville, et Benjamin, se retournant,aperçut que la ville tout entière montait en feu vers le ciel.
41 The Israelites then turned about, and the Benjaminites were seized with terror, for they saw thatdisaster had struck them.	41 Les gens d'Israël firent alors volte-face et les Benjaminites furent dans l'épouvante, car ils voyaientque le malheur les avait frappés.
42 They broke before the Israelite onslaught and made for the desert, but the fighters pressed themhard, while the others coming out of the town took and slaughtered them from the rear.	42 Ils s'enfuirent devant les gens d'Israël en direction du désert, mais les combattants les serraient deprès et ceux qui venaient de la ville les massacrèrent en les prenant à revers.
43 They hemmed in the Benjaminites, pursued them relentlessly, crushing them opposite Gibeah on theeast.	43 Ils cernèrent Benjamin, le poursuivirent sans répit et l'écrasèrent en face de Gibéa, du côté du soleillevant.
44 Of Benjamin, eighteen thousand men fel , al of them brave men.	44 De Benjamin, 18.000 hommes tombèrent, tous hommes vaillants. --
45 They then turned tail and fled into the desert, towards the Rock of Rimmon. Five thousand of themwere picked off on the roads, and the rest were relentlessly pursued as far as Gideon, two thousand of thembeing kil ed.	45 Alors ils tournèrent le dos et s'enfuirent au désert, vers le Rocher de Rimmôn. Sur les chemins, onramassa 5.000 hommes, puis on serra Benjamin de près jusqu'à Gideôm, et on lui tua 2.000 hommes.
46 The total number of Benjaminites who fel that day was twenty-five thousand swordsmen, al of thembrave men.	46 Le nombre total des Benjaminites qui tombèrent ce jour-là fut de 25.000 hommes sachant tirerl'épée, et c'étaient tous des hommes vaillants.
47 Six hundred men, however, turned tail and escaped into the desert, to the Rock of Rimmon, andthere they stayed for four months.	47 Six hommes tournèrent le dos et s'enfuirent au désert, vers le Rocher de Rimmôn. Ils y restèrentquatre mois.
48 The men of Israel then went back to the Benjaminites, and put them to the sword-people, livestockand everything else that came their way in the town. And they fired all the towns involved.	48 Les gens d'Israël revinrent vers les Benjaminites, ils passèrent au fil de l'épée la population mâle dela ville, et même le bétail et tout ce qu'ils trouvaient. Ils mirent aussi le feu à toutes les villes qu'ils rencontrèrent.
