1 The Israelites then al turned out and, as one man, the entire community from Dan to Beersheba,including Gilead, assembled in Yahweh's presence at Mizpah.	1 - Uscirono quindi tutti i figli d'Israele e da Dan fino a Bersabee e dalla terra di Galaad si raccolsero insieme, come un solo uomo, e vennero al Signore in Masfa.
2 The leaders of the entire people, of al the tribes of Israel, were present at this assembly of God'speople, four hundred thousand trained infantry.	2 Tutti i capi del popolo e tutte le tribù d'Israele si raccolsero in quell'assemblea del popolo di Dio. Erano quattrocentomila fanti in assetto di guerra.
3 The Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites then said, 'Tel ushow this crime was committed.'	3 E i figli di Beniamino non ignorarono che i figli d'Israele eran saliti a Masfa. Interrogato il levita, marito della donna uccisa, come fosse stato perpetrato un tanto delitto,
4 The Levite, husband of the murdered woman, spoke in reply and said,	4 rispose: «Ero giunto in Gabaa di Beniamino con la moglie mia e mi ero fermato colà,
5 'The men of Gibeah ganged up against me and, during the night, surrounded the house where I waslodging. They intended to murder me. They raped my concubine to death.	5 quando la notte gli uomini di quella città circondarono la casa, dove mi trovavo, volendo uccidere me, e in preda a un incredibile furore di libidine, violentarono la moglie mia, che finalmente morì.
6 I then took my concubine, cut her up and sent her throughout the entire territory of the heritage ofIsrael, since these men had committed a shameful act, an infamy, in Israel.	6 Io la presi, la feci a pezzi e ne mandai le parti in tutti i confini dei vostri possedimenti, perchè giammai era stato commesso in Israele un tale delitto e una così grande infamia.
7 Now, all you Israelites, discuss the matter and give your decision here and now.'	7 Voi siete qui tutti, o figli d'Israele; decretate ciò che dovete fare».
8 The whole people stood up as one man and said, 'None of us wil go home, none of us will go back tohis house!	8 E tutto il popolo, balzato in piedi, ad una voce rispose: «Non ritorneremo alle nostre tende nè alcuno porrà piede in casa sua;
9 And this is what we are now going to do to Gibeah. We shal draw lots	9 ma contro Gabaa questo faremo tutti insieme.
10 and, throughout the tribes of Israel, select ten men out of a hundred, a hundred out of a thousand anda thousand out of ten thousand to col ect food for the people, so that, on their arrival, the latter may treat Gibeahin Benjamin as this infamy perpetrated in Israel deserves.'	10 Si eleggano dieci uomini su cento fra tutte le tribù d'Israele, e cento su mille, e mille su diecimila per portare le vettovaglie all'esercito e poter così combattere contro Gabaa di Beniamino e infliggere la meritata vendetta di un tanto delitto».
11 Thus, as one man, al the men of Israel mustered against the town.	11 Così tutti i figli d'Israele si raccolsero contro quella città, quasi fossero un solo uomo e non avessero che un solo pensiero e una sola decisione.
12 The tribes of Israel sent messengers throughout the tribe of Benjamin to say, 'What is this crimewhich has been committed in your territory?	12 Mandarono quindi messaggeri a tutte le tribù di Beniamino per chiedere: «Come mai è stato tra voi commesso un tale delitto?
13 Now, give up these men, these scoundrels, living in Gibeah, so that we can put them to death andwipe out this evil from Israel.' The Benjaminites, however, would not listen to their brother Israelites.	13 Dateci gli uomini di Gabaa che perpetrarono quell'infamia e colla loro morte sia tolto da Israele il male commesso». Ma essi non vollero ascoltare l'imposizione dei loro fratelli, figli d'Israele;
14 The Benjaminites left their towns and mustered at Gibeah to fight the Israelites.	14 anzi da tutte le città che appartenevano al loro territorio convennero uomini in Gabaa per portare a questi aiuto e combatter contro tutto il popolo d'Israele.
15 At the time, a count was made of the Benjaminites from the various towns: there were twenty-sixthousand swordsmen; and the count excluded the inhabitants of Gibeah.	15 E si trovò che venticinquemila furono i figli di Beniamino abili a maneggiare la spada, oltre gli abitanti di Gabaa
16 In this great army there were seven hundred first-rate left-handers, every man of whom could sling astone at a hair and not miss it.	16 che avevano settecento uomini valorosissimi, capaci di combattere colla sinistra e colla destra e così valenti nel gettare colle fionde le pietre verso la mira, che potevano colpire anche un capello senza che la pietra fosse sviata da una parte o dall'altra.
17 A count was also held of the men of Israel, excluding Benjamin: there were four hundred thousandmen, al experienced swordsmen.	17 Quanto agli uomini d'Israele, ad esclusione dei figli di Beniamino, si trovò essere quattrocentomila quelli che sapevano maneggiare la spada e che erano pronti a combattere.
18 They moved off, up to Bethel, to consult God. The Israelites put the question, 'Which of us is to gofirst into battle against the Benjaminites?' And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to go first.'	18 Levatisi, vennero alla casa di Dio, vale a dire a Silo, e consultarono Iddio, dicendo: «Chi sarà nell'esercito nostro il capo della battaglia contro i figli di Beniamino?». E il Signore rispose: «Sia Giuda il vostro capo».
19 In the morning, the Israelites moved off and pitched their camp over against Gibeah.	19 Tosto i figli d'Israele si levarono di buon mattino e si accamparono presso Gabaa,
20 The men of Israel advanced to do battle with Benjamin; they drew up their battle line in front ofGibeah.	20 e di là avanzandosi per combattere contro [i figli di] Beniamino, cominciarono ad espugnare la città.
21 But the Benjaminites sal ied out from Gibeah and that day massacred twenty-two thousand Israelites.	21 Ma usciti i figli di Beniamino da Gabaa uccisero in quel giorno ventiduemila uomini dei figli d'Israele.
22 The army of the men of Israel then took fresh heart and again drew up their battle line in the sameplace as the day before.	22 Di nuovo i figli d'Israele, confidando nella loro forza e nel numero, si schierarono nello stesso luogo dove prima aveano combattuto;
23 The Israelites went and wept before Yahweh until evening; they then consulted Yahweh; they asked,'Shal we join battle again with the sons of our brother Benjamin?' Yahweh replied, 'March against him!'	23 portandosi però prima a piangere dinanzi al Signore fino a notte, e lo consultarono, dicendo: «Debbo continuar a combattere contro i figli di Beniamino, miei fratelli o no?». Al che egli rispose: «Salite contro di loro e date battaglia».
24 This second day, the Israelites advanced against the Benjaminites,	24 Mentre i figli d'Israele il giorno seguente movevano per combattere contro i figli di Beniamino,
25 and, this second day, Benjamin sallied out from Gibeah to meet them and massacred anothereighteen thousand Israelites, al experienced swordsmen.	25 questi irruppero fuori dalle porte di Gabaa e movendo ad essi incontro operarono una tale strage da stendere al suolo diciottomila di quei combattenti.
26 Then al the Israelites and the whole people went off to Bethel; they wept and sat in Yahweh'spresence; they fasted all day till the evening and presented burnt offerings and communion sacrifices beforeYahweh.	26 Vennero perciò tutti i figli d'Israele alla casa di Dio e, postisi a sedere, piansero al cospetto del Signore; poi in quel giorno digiunarono fino a sera e offerti sacrifici e vittime pacifiche al Signore,
27 The Israelites then consulted Yahweh. In those days, the ark of the covenant of God was there,	27 lo interrogarono intorno alla sorte ad essi riservata. In quel tempo l'arca dell'alleanza di Dio era colà
28 and Phinehas son of Eleazer, son of Aaron was its minister at the time. They said, 'Ought I to go intobattle against the sons of my brother Benjamin again, or should I stop?' Yahweh replied, 'March! For tomorrow Ishall deliver him into your hands.'	28 e Finees figlio di Eleazaro figlio di Aronne presiedeva al tabernacolo. Consultarono quindi il Signore e chiesero: «Dobbiamo un'altra volta muovere alla pugna contro i figli di Beniamino, nostri fratelli, o astenercene?». E il Signore rispose ad essi: «Salite, poichè domani li darò in vostra balìa».
29 Israel then positioned troops in ambush al round Gibeah.	29 E i figli d'Israele posero agguati intorno alla città di Gabaa e
30 On the third day the Israelites marched against the Benjaminites and, as before, drew up their line infront of Gibeah.	30 per la terza volta come per la prima e per la seconda misero in campo l'esercito contro Beniamino.
31 The Benjaminites sal ied out to engage the people and let themselves be drawn away from the town.As before, they began by kil ing those of the people who were on the roads, one of which runs up to Bethel, andthe other to Gibeah through open country: some thirty men of Israel.	31 Ma anche i figli di Beniamino irruppero audacemente fuori dalla città e inseguirono a lungo gli avversari postisi in fuga cosicchè ne ferirono come il primo e il secondo giorno e fecero a pezzi quelli che prendevano la fuga per le due strade, conducenti una a Betel e l'altra a Gabaa e ne abbatterono circa trenta
32 The Benjaminites thought, 'We have beaten them, as we did the first time,' but the Israelites haddecided, 'We shal run away and draw them away from the town along the roads.'	32 pensando che come al solito fossero sconfitti. Ma quelli che avevano simulato la fuga eransi proposti di allontanarli dalla città e di condurli, simulando la fuga, sui sentieri sopra indicati.
33 All the Israelites then retreated and reformed at Baal-Tamar, while the Israelite troops in ambushsurged from their positions to the west of Gibeah.	33 Allora tutti i figli di Israele, levatisi dal posto dove si trovavano, si spinsero in ordine di battaglia verso il luogo chiamato Baaltamar, e quelli che erano in agguato intorno alla città cominciarono a poco a poco a scoprirsi
34 Ten thousand picked men, chosen from the whole of Israel, launched their attack on Gibeah. Thebattle was fierce; and the others knew nothing of the disaster impending.	34 e a procedere verso la porta occidentale di essa. Frattanto altri diecimila uomini, scelti da tutto Israele, provocarono gli abitanti della città a combattere e la battaglia si fece asprissima contro i figli di Beniamino, i quali non si rendevano conto che da ogni parte li aspettava la morte.
35 Yahweh defeated Benjamin before Israel and that day the Israelites kil ed twenty-five thousand onehundred men of Benjamin, al of them trained swordsmen.	35 Il Signore li sconfisse al cospetto dei figli di Israele, i quali ne uccisero in quel giorno venticinquemila e cento uomini tutti guerrieri e atti a maneggiare la spada.
36 The Benjaminites saw that they were beaten. The Israelites had given ground to Benjamin, since theywere relying on the ambush which they had positioned close to Gibeah.	36 Allora i figli di Beniamino, vistisi soccombenti, cominciarono a fuggire e i figli di Israele a veder ciò facilitarono la fuga, perchè venissero agli agguati preparati accanto alla città.
37 The troops in ambush threw themselves against Gibeah at top speed; fanning out, they put the wholetown to the sword.	37 Usciti allora dai nascondigli, mentre Beniamino volgeva le spalle, entrarono nella città, e la passarono a fil di spada.
38 Now it had been agreed between the Israelites and those of the ambush that the latter should raise asmoke signal from the town,	38 I figli d'Israele avevano dato a quei che erano posti in agguato il segnale, che presa la città, vi dessero fuoco per dimostrare col fumo che sarebbe salito in alto che la città era presa.
39 whereupon the Israelites in the thick of the battle would turn about. Benjamin began by kil ing some ofthe Israelites, about thirty men, and thought, 'We have certainly beaten them, as we did in the first battle.'	39 Al veder ciò, i figli d'Israele impegnati nel combattere i Beniamiti (i quali credevano che essi fuggissero e perciò li inseguivano con più forza, dopo aver ucciso trenta uomini del loro esercito),
40 But the signal, a column of smoke, began to rise from the town, and the Benjaminites looking backsaw the whole town going up in flames to the sky.	40 al vedere dunque la colonna di fumo salire dalla città (anche Beniamino guardando indietro s'accòrse che la città era presa e le fiamme salivano in alto),
41 The Israelites then turned about, and the Benjaminites were seized with terror, for they saw thatdisaster had struck them.	41 quelli che prima aveano simulato la fuga si voltarono indietro e resistettero validamente. Visto ciò, i figli di Beniamino si volsero in fuga
42 They broke before the Israelite onslaught and made for the desert, but the fighters pressed themhard, while the others coming out of the town took and slaughtered them from the rear.	42 e presero la via del deserto, avendo sempre alle spalle i loro avversari. Ma anche quelli che avevano dato fuoco alla città vennero loro incontro
43 They hemmed in the Benjaminites, pursued them relentlessly, crushing them opposite Gibeah on theeast.	43 e così d'ambedue le parti vennero battuti dai nemici e morirono senza aver scampo. Caddero e furono abbattuti dalla parte orientale della città di Gabaa.
44 Of Benjamin, eighteen thousand men fel , al of them brave men.	44 Quelli che rimasero uccisi in questo stesso luogo furono diciottomila uomini, tutti valorosissimi combattenti.
45 They then turned tail and fled into the desert, towards the Rock of Rimmon. Five thousand of themwere picked off on the roads, and the rest were relentlessly pursued as far as Gideon, two thousand of thembeing kil ed.	45 Al vedere ciò i pochi di Beniamino che erano rimasti se ne fuggirono nella solitudine, e vennero alla roccia chiamata Remmon. Anche durante la fuga vennero uccisi altri cinquemila uomini sbandati ed erranti in diverse direzioni; e poichè volevano spingersi oltre furono inseguiti e ne rimasero uccisi altri duemila.
46 The total number of Benjaminites who fel that day was twenty-five thousand swordsmen, al of thembrave men.	46 Così avvenne che, in tutto, quei di Beniamino rimasti caduti nei diversi luoghi furono venticinquemila combattenti e uomini di grande valore.
47 Six hundred men, however, turned tail and escaped into the desert, to the Rock of Rimmon, andthere they stayed for four months.	47 Di tutti i figli di Beniamino rimasero pertanto seicento uomini soli, i quali, avendo potuto sfuggire e raggiungere il deserto, rimasero alla roccia di Remmon per quattro mesi;
48 The men of Israel then went back to the Benjaminites, and put them to the sword-people, livestockand everything else that came their way in the town. And they fired all the towns involved.	48 mentre i figli di Israele ritornati indietro, uccisero tutto ciò che era restato nella città, dagli uomini fino agli animali e tutte le città e i villaggi di Beniamino furono preda del fuoco divoratore.
