NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The Israelites then al turned out and, as one man, the entire community from Dan to Beersheba,including Gilead, assembled in Yahweh's presence at Mizpah.	1 Entonces todos los israelitas salieron como un solo hombre, desde Dan hasta Berseba y hasta la región de Galaad, y la comunidad se reunió delante del Señor, en Mispá.
2 The leaders of the entire people, of al the tribes of Israel, were present at this assembly of God'speople, four hundred thousand trained infantry.	2 Los dignatarios de todo el pueblo y todas las tribus acudieron a la asamblea del pueblo de Dios: eran cuatrocientos mil hombres de a pie, armados de espada.
3 The Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites then said, 'Tel ushow this crime was committed.'	3 Los benjaminitas, por su parte, oyeron que los israelitas habían subido a Mispá. Los israelitas dijeron: «Cuéntennos cómo ha sucedido el crimen».
4 The Levite, husband of the murdered woman, spoke in reply and said,	4 Entonces el levita, el marido de la mujer asesinada, tomó la palabra y dijo: «Yo y mi concubina llegamos a Guibeá de Benjamín para pasar la noche,
5 'The men of Gibeah ganged up against me and, during the night, surrounded the house where I waslodging. They intended to murder me. They raped my concubine to death.	5 y los vecinos de Guibeá se levantaron contra mí: durante la noche rodearon la casa, intentaron matarme y abusaron de mi concubina hasta hacerla morir.
6 I then took my concubine, cut her up and sent her throughout the entire territory of the heritage ofIsrael, since these men had committed a shameful act, an infamy, in Israel.	6 Yo tomé a mi concubina, la corté en pedazos y envié esos pedazos a todo el territorio de la herencia de Israel, porque se había cometido una depravación y una infamia en Israel.
7 Now, all you Israelites, discuss the matter and give your decision here and now.'	7 Ahora les toca a ustedes, israelitas, tomar aquí mismo una determinación».
8 The whole people stood up as one man and said, 'None of us wil go home, none of us will go back tohis house!	8 Todo el pueblo se levantó como un solo hombre y exclamó: «Ninguno de nosotros irá a su campamento; nadie volverá a su casa.
9 And this is what we are now going to do to Gibeah. We shal draw lots	9 Y con Guibeá haremos lo siguiente: sortearemos a los que subirán a atacarla;
10 and, throughout the tribes of Israel, select ten men out of a hundred, a hundred out of a thousand anda thousand out of ten thousand to col ect food for the people, so that, on their arrival, the latter may treat Gibeahin Benjamin as this infamy perpetrated in Israel deserves.'	10 de entre todas las tribus de Israel, tomaremos a diez hombres de cada cien, a cien de cada mil, y a mil de cada diez mil. 11 Thus, as one man, al the men of Israel mustered against the town.	11 Así, todos los hombres de Israel quedaron unidos como un solo hombre contra aquella ciudad.
12 The tribes of Israel sent messengers throughout the tribe of Benjamin to say, 'What is this crimewhich has been committed in your territory?	12 Las tribus de Israel enviaron emisarios a toda la tribu de Benjamín para decirle: «¿Qué explicación dan al crimen que se ha cometido entre ustedes?
13 Now, give up these men, these scoundrels, living in Gibeah, so that we can put them to death andwipe out this evil from Israel.' The Benjaminites, however, would not listen to their brother Israelites.	13 Entreguen a esos hombres pervertidos de Guibeá, para que los matemos y hagamos desaparecer el mal de Israel. Pero los benjaminitas no quisieron escuchar la demanda de sus hermanos israelitas.
14 The Benjaminites left their towns and mustered at Gibeah to fight the Israelites.	14 Los benjaminitas de todas las ciudades se reunieron en Guibeá para salir a combatir contra los israelitas.
15 At the time, a count was made of the Benjaminites from the various towns: there were twenty-sixthousand swordsmen; and the count excluded the inhabitants of Gibeah.	15 Aquel mismo día se hizo el recuento de los benjaminitas provenientes de las diversas ciudades, y resultaron en total veinticinco mil hombres armados de espada, sin contar a los habitantes de Guibeá.
16 In this great army there were seven hundred first-rate left-handers, every man of whom could sling astone at a hair and not miss it.	16 De toda esa tropa, setecientos hombres eran guerreros adiestrados, ambidextros, y capaces de arrojar la piedra de su honda contra un cabello, sin errar el tiro.
17 A count was also held of the men of Israel, excluding Benjamin: there were four hundred thousandmen, al experienced swordsmen.	17 La gente de Israel también hizo un recuento: descontando a Benjamín, eran cuatrocientos mil hombres armados de espada, todos guerreros.
18 They moved off, up to Bethel, to consult God. The Israelites put the question, 'Which of us is to gofirst into battle against the Benjaminites?' And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to go first.'	18 En seguida subieron a Betel y consultaron a Dios para preguntarle: «¿Quién de nosotros será el primero en subir a luchar contra los benjaminitas?». Y el Señor respondió: «Judá será el primero».
19 In the morning, the Israelites moved off and pitched their camp over against Gibeah.	19 Los israelitas avanzaron de madrugada para acampar frente a Guibeá
20 The men of Israel advanced to do battle with Benjamin; they drew up their battle line in front ofGibeah.	20 y salir a luchar contra Benjamín. Los hombres de Israel se dispusieron en orden de batalla frente a la ciudad,
21 But the Benjaminites sal ied out from Gibeah and that day massacred twenty-two thousand Israelites.	21 pero los benjaminitas salieron de Guibeá y dejaron tendidos por tierra aquel día a veintidós mil hombres de Israel.
22 The army of the men of Israel then took fresh heart and again drew up their battle line in the sameplace as the day before.	22 Entonces los israelitas subieron a lamentarse delante del Señor hasta la tarde. Luego consultaron al Señor, diciendo: «¿Tenemos que entablar un nuevo combate con los hijos de nuestro hermano Benjamín?». Y el Señor respondió: «Suban a atacarlo».
23 The Israelites went and wept before Yahweh until evening; they then consulted Yahweh; they asked,'Shal we join battle again with the sons of our brother Benjamin?' Yahweh replied, 'March against him!'	23 De esta manera, la tropa israelita recobró el valor y volvió a disponer sus filas para el combate en el mismo lugar que el primer día.
24 This second day, the Israelites advanced against the Benjaminites,	24 Los israelitas se acercaron por segunda vez a los benjaminitas,
25 and, this second day, Benjamin sallied out from Gibeah to meet them and massacred anothereighteen thousand Israelites, al experienced swordsmen.	25 pero también aquel segundo día Benjamín les salió al encuentro desde Guibeá, y dejó tendidos por tierra a dieciocho mil israelitas, todos ellos armados de espada.
26 Then al the Israelites and the whole people went off to Bethel; they wept and sat in Yahweh'spresence; they fasted all day till the evening and presented burnt offerings and communion sacrifices beforeYahweh.	26 Entonces los israelitas subieron a Betel con todo el pueblo y allí se lamentaron, sentados delante del Señor: ayunaron todo el día hasta la tarde y ofrecieron al Señor holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión.
27 The Israelites then consulted Yahweh. In those days, the ark of the covenant of God was there,	27 Después consultaron al Señor, porque en aquel tiempo el Arca de la Alianza de Dios se encontraba allí,
28 and Phinehas son of Eleazer, son of Aaron was its minister at the time. They said, 'Ought I to go intobattle against the sons of my brother Benjamin again, or should I stop?' Yahweh replied, 'March! For tomorrow Ishall deliver him into your hands.'	28 y Pinjás, hijo de Eleazar, hijo de Aarón, estaba al servicio de ella. «¿Tenemos que salir otra vez a luchar contra los hijos de nuestro hermano Benjamín, o debemos desistir?», preguntaron al Señor. Y el Señor respondió: «Suban, porque mañana los entregaré en manos de ustedes».
29 Israel then positioned troops in ambush al round Gibeah.	29 Israel tendió una emboscada alrededor de Guibeá.
30 On the third day the Israelites marched against the Benjaminites and, as before, drew up their line infront of Gibeah.	30 Al tercer día, los israelitas avanzaron contra Benjamín, y dispusieron sus filas contra Guibeá, como las otras veces.
31 The Benjaminites sal ied out to engage the people and let themselves be drawn away from the town.As before, they began by kil ing those of the people who were on the roads, one of which runs up to Bethel, andthe other to Gibeah through open country: some thirty men of Israel.	31 los benjaminitas les salieron al encuentro, dejándose arrastrar lejos de la ciudad, y comenzaron como las otras veces a matar gente por los senderos que suben, uno a Betel y el otro a Gabaón. Así mataron a unos treinta hombres de Israel, sobre el campo raso.
32 The Benjaminites thought, 'We have beaten them, as we did the first time,' but the Israelites haddecided, 'We shal run away and draw them away from the town along the roads.'	32 Entonces los benjaminitas pensaron: «Ya los tenemos derrotados como la primera vez». Pero los israelitas habían dicho: «Vamos a simular que huimos, para atraerlos hasta los caminos, lejos de la ciudad».
33 All the Israelites then retreated and reformed at Baal-Tamar, while the Israelite troops in ambushsurged from their positions to the west of Gibeah.	33 Todos los hombres de Israel se levantaron de sus puestos y tomaron posiciones en Baal Tamar. Los israelitas que estaban emboscados, atacaron desde sus posiciones al oeste de Gueba.
34 Ten thousand picked men, chosen from the whole of Israel, launched their attack on Gibeah. Thebattle was fierce; and the others knew nothing of the disaster impending.	34 Diez mil guerreros adiestrados de todo Israel llegaron frente a Guibeá. El combate se hizo muy encarnizado, sin que los benjaminitas advirtieran el desastre que se les venía encima.
35 Yahweh defeated Benjamin before Israel and that day the Israelites kil ed twenty-five thousand onehundred men of Benjamin, al of them trained swordsmen.	35 El Señor hizo que Benjamín cayera derrotado delante de Israel, y aquel día los israelitas mataron a veinticinco mil cien hombres de Benjamín, todos ellos armados de espada
36 The Benjaminites saw that they were beaten. The Israelites had given ground to Benjamin, since theywere relying on the ambush which they had positioned close to Gibeah.
37 The troops in ambush threw themselves against Gibeah at top speed; fanning out, they put the wholetown to the sword.	37 Estos, por su parte, se desplegaron rápidamente y atacaron a Guibeá, pasando a todos sus habitantes al filo de la espada.
38 Now it had been agreed between the Israelites and those of the ambush that the latter should raise asmoke signal from the town,	38 La gente de Israel se había puesto de acuerdo con los que estaban emboscados, para que estos levantaran una humareda desde la ciudad,
39 whereupon the Israelites in the thick of the battle would turn about. Benjamin began by kil ing some ofthe Israelites, about thirty men, and thought, 'We have certainly beaten them, as we did in the first battle.'	39 y entonces ellos presentarían batalla. Cuando Benjamín comenzó a matar a algunos israelitas, unos treinta hombres en total, pensó: «Ya los tenemos completamente derrotados, como en el primer combate».
40 But the signal, a column of smoke, began to rise from the town, and the Benjaminites looking backsaw the whole town going up in flames to the sky.	40 Pero la columna de humo empezó a levantarse desde la ciudad, y Benjamín, al mirar atrás, vio que la ciudad entera subía en llamas hacia el cielo.
41 The Israelites then turned about, and the Benjaminites were seized with terror, for they saw thatdisaster had struck them.	41 Entonces los hombres de Israel presentaron batalla, y los benjaminitas temblaron al ver el desastre que se les venía encima.
42 They broke before the Israelite onslaught and made for the desert, but the fighters pressed themhard, while the others coming out of the town took and slaughtered them from the rear.	42 Los benjaminitas retrocedieron ante los hombres de Israel en dirección al desierto, pero se vieron acosados por los combatientes, y los que venían de la ciudad atacaron tomándolos entre dos frentes.
43 They hemmed in the Benjaminites, pursued them relentlessly, crushing them opposite Gibeah on theeast.	43 Así encerraron a Benjamín, lo persiguieron sin darle tregua y siguieron derrotándolo hasta llegar a Gueba por el oriente.
44 Of Benjamin, eighteen thousand men fel , al of them brave men.	44 Cayeron dieciocho mil guerreros de Benjamín.
45 They then turned tail and fled into the desert, towards the Rock of Rimmon. Five thousand of themwere picked off on the roads, and the rest were relentlessly pursued as far as Gideon, two thousand of thembeing kil ed.	45 y los sobrevivientes volvieron la espalda y huyeron al desierto, hacia la Roca de Rimón. Los israelitas capturaron por los caminos a cinco mil hombres y, mientras perseguían a Benjamín hasta Gueba, mataron a otros dos mil.
46 The total number of Benjaminites who fel that day was twenty-five thousand swordsmen, al of thembrave men.	46 Aquel día cayeron en total veinticinco mil benjaminitas, todos ellos guerreros armados de espada.
47 Six hundred men, however, turned tail and escaped into the desert, to the Rock of Rimmon, andthere they stayed for four months.	47 Seiscientos hombres, en cambio, pudieron escapar al desierto, hasta la Roca de Rimón, y allí estuvieron durante cuatro meses.
48 The men of Israel then went back to the Benjaminites, and put them to the sword-people, livestockand everything else that came their way in the town. And they fired all the towns involved.	48 Los israelitas se volvieron contra los benjaminitas y pasaron al filo de la espada a los varones de las ciudades, al ganado y a todo lo que encontraron, y también incendiaron a su paso a todas las ciudades.
