1 The Israelites then al turned out and, as one man, the entire community from Dan to Beersheba,including Gilead, assembled in Yahweh's presence at Mizpah.	1 Movimentaram-se, pois, todos os israelitas como um só homem, desde Dã até Bersabéia, e até a terra de Galaad. E a assembléia reuniu-se diante do Senhor em Masfa.
2 The leaders of the entire people, of al the tribes of Israel, were present at this assembly of God'speople, four hundred thousand trained infantry.	2 os chefes de todo o povo e todas as tribos de Israel apresentaram-se diante da assembléia do povo de Deus: havia quatrocentos mil homens de pé, armados com a espada.
3 The Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites then said, 'Tel ushow this crime was committed.'	3 E os filhos de Benjamim souberam que os israelitas tinham subido a Masfa. Os israelitas disseram: Dizei-nos de que modo se cometeu esse crime?
4 The Levite, husband of the murdered woman, spoke in reply and said,	4 O levita, marido da mulher que foi morta, tomou a palavra: Eu cheguei a Gabaa de Benjamiml, disse ele, com minha concubina para ali passar a noite.
5 'The men of Gibeah ganged up against me and, during the night, surrounded the house where I waslodging. They intended to murder me. They raped my concubine to death.	5 Os homens de Gabaa, porém, amotinaram-se contra mim e cercaram de noite a casa, querendo matar-me; violentaram a minha concubina, e ela morreu.
6 I then took my concubine, cut her up and sent her throughout the entire territory of the heritage ofIsrael, since these men had committed a shameful act, an infamy, in Israel.	6 Tomei-a então e cortei-a em pedaços, que mandei distribuir por todo o território da herança de Israel, porque cometeram uma atrocidade e uma infâmia em Israel.
7 Now, all you Israelites, discuss the matter and give your decision here and now.'	7 Vós todos, ó israelitas que aqui estais, dai o vosso parecer e tomai uma decisão.
8 The whole people stood up as one man and said, 'None of us wil go home, none of us will go back tohis house!	8 Levantou-se então todo o povo como um só homem, dizendo: Ninguém dentre nós irá à sua tenda, e ninguém voltará à sua casa.
9 And this is what we are now going to do to Gibeah. We shal draw lots	9 Eis o que agora vamos fazer a Gabaa: lancemos a sorte contra ela!
10 and, throughout the tribes of Israel, select ten men out of a hundred, a hundred out of a thousand anda thousand out of ten thousand to col ect food for the people, so that, on their arrival, the latter may treat Gibeahin Benjamin as this infamy perpetrated in Israel deserves.'	10 Tomemos dentre todas as tribos de Israel dez homens de cada cem, cem de cada mil, e mil de cada dez mil, que irão procurar víveres para o abastecimento do povo. É preciso, quando eles voltarem, tratarmos a Gabaa de Benjamim como ela merece pela infâmia que cometeu em Israel.
11 Thus, as one man, al the men of Israel mustered against the town.	11 Assim se coligou contra a cidade todo o Israel, como se fora um só homem.
12 The tribes of Israel sent messengers throughout the tribe of Benjamin to say, 'What is this crimewhich has been committed in your territory?	12 Mandaram mensageiros a todas as famílias de Benjamim, para que lhe dissessem: Que maldade é essa que se cometeu no meio de vós?
13 Now, give up these men, these scoundrels, living in Gibeah, so that we can put them to death andwipe out this evil from Israel.' The Benjaminites, however, would not listen to their brother Israelites.	13 Entregai-nos sem demora os celerados de Gabaa, para que os matemos e tiremos o mal do meio de Israel. Mas os benjaminitas não quiseram dar ouvidos aos seus irmãos israelitas.
14 The Benjaminites left their towns and mustered at Gibeah to fight the Israelites.	14 Juntaram-se em Gabaa de todas as suas cidades para combater os israelitas.
15 At the time, a count was made of the Benjaminites from the various towns: there were twenty-sixthousand swordsmen; and the count excluded the inhabitants of Gibeah.	15 Contaram-se naquele dia os benjaminitas que acorreram de todas as cidades: vinte e seis mil homens, armados de espada, sem contar os habitantes de Gabaa, que eram setecentos homens de escol.
16 In this great army there were seven hundred first-rate left-handers, every man of whom could sling astone at a hair and not miss it.	16 Entre todo esse povo havia setecentos homens de escol que não se serviam da mão direita, e todos capazes de atirar pedras com a funda num cabelo, sem errar o alvo.
17 A count was also held of the men of Israel, excluding Benjamin: there were four hundred thousandmen, al experienced swordsmen.	17 O número de israelitas recenseados, excluindo Benjamim, era de quatrocentos mil homens armados de espada, todos aptos para o combate.
18 They moved off, up to Bethel, to consult God. The Israelites put the question, 'Which of us is to gofirst into battle against the Benjaminites?' And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to go first.'	18 Os israelitas subiram a Betel para consultar o Senhor; perguntaram.: Quem de nós subirá primeiro para começar a luta contra os benjaminitas? O Senhor respondeu-lhes: Judá será o primeiro a subir.
19 In the morning, the Israelites moved off and pitched their camp over against Gibeah.	19 Partiram os israelitas no dia seguinte pela manhã e acamparam perto de Gabaa.
20 The men of Israel advanced to do battle with Benjamin; they drew up their battle line in front ofGibeah.	20 Começaram o combate contra os filhos de Benjamim, e puseram-se em ordem de batalha perto da cidade.
21 But the Benjaminites sal ied out from Gibeah and that day massacred twenty-two thousand Israelites.	21 Saindo os benjaminitas infligiram a Israel naquele dia uma perda de vinte e dois mil homens, que juncavam o solo.
22 The army of the men of Israel then took fresh heart and again drew up their battle line in the sameplace as the day before.	22 A multidão dos filhos de Israel, recobrando nova coragem, pôs-se outra vez em ordem de batalha no mesmo lugar onde estiveram na véspera.
23 The Israelites went and wept before Yahweh until evening; they then consulted Yahweh; they asked,'Shal we join battle again with the sons of our brother Benjamin?' Yahweh replied, 'March against him!'	23 Até a tarde estiveram os filhos de Israel chorando diante do Senhor, e o consultaram, dizendo: Devo continuar ainda a combater contra os filhos de Benjamim, meu irmão? O Senhor respondeu: Marchai contra ele.
24 This second day, the Israelites advanced against the Benjaminites,	24 Os israelitas avançaram segunda vez contra os benjaminitas,
25 and, this second day, Benjamin sallied out from Gibeah to meet them and massacred anothereighteen thousand Israelites, al experienced swordsmen.	25 que saíram de Gabaa ao seu encontro e lançaram-nos de novo por terra, matando dezoito mil israelitas, todos homens que manejavam a espada.
26 Then al the Israelites and the whole people went off to Bethel; they wept and sat in Yahweh'spresence; they fasted all day till the evening and presented burnt offerings and communion sacrifices beforeYahweh.	26 Então todo o povo dos israelitas subiu a Betel, e ali, sentados, lamentavam-se diante do Senhor, jejuando naquele dia até a tarde; e ofereceram holocaustos e sacrifícios pacíficos diante do Senhor.
27 The Israelites then consulted Yahweh. In those days, the ark of the covenant of God was there,	27 E consultaram-no. Naquele tempo a arca da aliança de Deus estava lá, com Finéias, filho de Eleazar, filho de Aarão, que se conservava junto dela.
28 and Phinehas son of Eleazer, son of Aaron was its minister at the time. They said, 'Ought I to go intobattle against the sons of my brother Benjamin again, or should I stop?' Yahweh replied, 'March! For tomorrow Ishall deliver him into your hands.'	28 Disseram, pois: Devo continuar ou devo cessar a guerra contra Benjamim, meu irmão? O Senhor respondeu: lde, porque amanhã eu os entregarei nas vossas mãos.
29 Israel then positioned troops in ambush al round Gibeah.	29 Israel pôs emboscadas em volta de Gabaa e,
30 On the third day the Israelites marched against the Benjaminites and, as before, drew up their line infront of Gibeah.	30 ao terceiro dia, recomeçou o combate contra os benjaminitas na mesma ordem de batalha que antes.
31 The Benjaminites sal ied out to engage the people and let themselves be drawn away from the town.As before, they began by kil ing those of the people who were on the roads, one of which runs up to Bethel, andthe other to Gibeah through open country: some thirty men of Israel.	31 Saindo contra eles, os benjaminitas deixaram-se atrair para longe da cidade, e puseram-se, como das outras vezes, a ferir e a matar alguns homens de Israel, uns trinta aproximadamente, nos caminhos que sobem para Betel e para Gabaa através do campo.
32 The Benjaminites thought, 'We have beaten them, as we did the first time,' but the Israelites haddecided, 'We shal run away and draw them away from the town along the roads.'	32 Os filhos de Benjamim disseram entre si: Ei-los batidos diante de nós como dantes. Os filhos de Israel, porém, diziam: Fujamos e atraiamo-los para longe da cidade por esses caminhos.
33 All the Israelites then retreated and reformed at Baal-Tamar, while the Israelite troops in ambushsurged from their positions to the west of Gibeah.	33 Então, saindo todos os israelitas dos seus postos, ordenaram-se em batalha em Baal-Tamar, enquanto os homens de emboscada deixavam os seus esconderijos na planície da Gabaa.
34 Ten thousand picked men, chosen from the whole of Israel, launched their attack on Gibeah. Thebattle was fierce; and the others knew nothing of the disaster impending.	34 Surgiram assim diante de Gabaa dez mil homens de escol do exército de Israel. A batalha foi rude: mas os benjaminitas não supunham que a derrota ia atingi-los.
35 Yahweh defeated Benjamin before Israel and that day the Israelites kil ed twenty-five thousand onehundred men of Benjamin, al of them trained swordsmen.	35 O Senhor destruiu Benjamim à vista dos filhos de Israel, os quais mataram naquele dia vinte e cinco mil e cem benjaminitas, todos homens de armas.
36 The Benjaminites saw that they were beaten. The Israelites had given ground to Benjamin, since theywere relying on the ambush which they had positioned close to Gibeah.	36 OS filhos de Benjamim foram derrotados. Os israelitas tinham-lhes cedido terreno para fugir, porque confiavam na emboscada que tinham posto junto de Gabaa.
37 The troops in ambush threw themselves against Gibeah at top speed; fanning out, they put the wholetown to the sword.	37 Saindo, pois, os homens dessa emboscada, cercaram a cidade e passaram tudo ao fio da espada.
38 Now it had been agreed between the Israelites and those of the ambush that the latter should raise asmoke signal from the town,	38 Ora, os homens de Israel tinham combinado com os da emboscada que fizessem subir da cidade como sinal uma nuvem de fumo.
39 whereupon the Israelites in the thick of the battle would turn about. Benjamin began by kil ing some ofthe Israelites, about thirty men, and thought, 'We have certainly beaten them, as we did in the first battle.'	39 Os homens de Israel simularam a fuga no combate, e Benjamim pôs-se a ferir e a matar cerca de trinta homens, dizendo: Sem dúvida, estão derrotados diante de nós como no primeiro combate.
40 But the signal, a column of smoke, began to rise from the town, and the Benjaminites looking backsaw the whole town going up in flames to the sky.	40 Mas quando a nuvem de fumo começou a subir da cidade, os benjaminitas olharam para trás e viram o incêndio de Gabaa subir até o céu.
41 The Israelites then turned about, and the Benjaminites were seized with terror, for they saw thatdisaster had struck them.	41 Os homens de Israel deram volta e os benjaminitas ficaram pasmados ante o desastre que vinha sobre eles.
42 They broke before the Israelite onslaught and made for the desert, but the fighters pressed themhard, while the others coming out of the town took and slaughtered them from the rear.	42 Voltaram as costas diante dos israelitas e tomaram o caminho do deserto; o exército, porém, os perseguiu de perto, e os das cidades foram massacrados cada um em seu próprio lugar.
43 They hemmed in the Benjaminites, pursued them relentlessly, crushing them opposite Gibeah on theeast.	43 Cercaram os benjaminitas, perseguiram-nos e esmagaram-nos em todas as suas paragens até defronte de Gabaa, para as bandas do levante.
44 Of Benjamin, eighteen thousand men fel , al of them brave men.	44 Dessa sorte, caíram dezoito mil valentes guerreiros benjaminitas,
45 They then turned tail and fled into the desert, towards the Rock of Rimmon. Five thousand of themwere picked off on the roads, and the rest were relentlessly pursued as far as Gideon, two thousand of thembeing kil ed.	45 enquanto o resto se pôs a fugir para o deserto até o rochedo de Remon. Nessa fuga foram ainda mortos cinco mil homens pelos caminhos; e perseguindo-os de perto até Gedeão, mataram ainda dois mil.
46 The total number of Benjaminites who fel that day was twenty-five thousand swordsmen, al of thembrave men.	46 Naquele dia foram mortos vinte e cinco mil homens de Benjamim, guerreiros valentes que manejavam a espada.
47 Six hundred men, however, turned tail and escaped into the desert, to the Rock of Rimmon, andthere they stayed for four months.	47 Seiscentos homens tinham chegado, em sua fuga para o deserto, ao rochedo de Remon, onde ficaram quatro meses.
48 The men of Israel then went back to the Benjaminites, and put them to the sword-people, livestockand everything else that came their way in the town. And they fired all the towns involved.	48 {Entrementes}, os israelitas tinham-se voltado contra os filhos de Benjamim e passaram ao fio da espada tudo o que lhes caía nas mãos nas cidades, desde os homens até os animais. Incendiaram também todas as cidades que encontraram.
