1 The Israelites then al turned out and, as one man, the entire community from Dan to Beersheba,including Gilead, assembled in Yahweh's presence at Mizpah.	1 Andarono adunque tutti i figliuoli d'Israele, e si radunarono insieme con un sol cuore dinanzi al Signore in Maspha, da Dan sino a Bersabee, e dalla terra di Galaad.
2 The leaders of the entire people, of al the tribes of Israel, were present at this assembly of God'speople, four hundred thousand trained infantry.	2 E tutti i capi de' popoli, e tutte le tribù d'Israele intervennero all'adunanza del popol di Dio in numero di quattrocento mila pedoni atti alla guerra.
3 The Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites then said, 'Tel ushow this crime was committed.'	3 (E non ignorarono quelli di Beniamin che si erano congregati i figliuoli d'Israele in Maspha). E fu interrogato il Levita marito della donna uccisa, in qual modo fosse stata eseguita così grande scelleraggine.
4 The Levite, husband of the murdered woman, spoke in reply and said,	4 Egli rispose: Io era arrivato a Gabaa di Beniamin colla mia moglie, e ivi albergai.
5 'The men of Gibeah ganged up against me and, during the night, surrounded the house where I waslodging. They intended to murder me. They raped my concubine to death.	5 Quand’ecco che uomini di quella città circondarono di notte tempo la casa, dov'io mi trovava, volendo uccidermi: e questi avendo straziata con inaudito furore di libidine la mia moglie ella se ne morì.
6 I then took my concubine, cut her up and sent her throughout the entire territory of the heritage ofIsrael, since these men had committed a shameful act, an infamy, in Israel.	6 E io la presi, e la feci in pezzi, e ne mandai i brani in tutti i luoghi del vostro dominio: conciossiachè indegnità così grande, e orrore simile non è mai avvenuto in Israele.
7 Now, all you Israelites, discuss the matter and give your decision here and now.'	7 Siete tutti raunati, o figliuoli d'Israele: risolvete quello che abbiate a fare.
8 The whole people stood up as one man and said, 'None of us wil go home, none of us will go back tohis house!	8 E tutto il popolo stando in piedi rispose, come se fosse stato un sol uomo: Noi non torneremo alle nostre tende, e nissuno rientrerà in sua casa;
9 And this is what we are now going to do to Gibeah. We shal draw lots	9 Ma faremo così tutti d'accordo contro Gabaa:
10 and, throughout the tribes of Israel, select ten men out of a hundred, a hundred out of a thousand anda thousand out of ten thousand to col ect food for the people, so that, on their arrival, the latter may treat Gibeahin Benjamin as this infamy perpetrated in Israel deserves.'	10 Si scelgano da tutte le tribù d'Israele dieci uomini di ogni centinajo, e cento d'ogni migliajo, e mille di dieci mila, i quali forniscano l’esercito di vettovaglia, affinchè noi possiamo far guerra a Gabaa di Beniamin, e farle pagar il fio della sua scelleraggine.
11 Thus, as one man, al the men of Israel mustered against the town.	11 E si collegò tutto Israele contro quella città, come fosse un sol uomo collo stesso animo, e colla stessa risoluzione.
12 The tribes of Israel sent messengers throughout the tribe of Benjamin to say, 'What is this crimewhich has been committed in your territory?	12 E spedirono ambasciatori a tutta la tribù di Beniamin che dissero: Perchè mai si è trovata in voi tanta scelleratezza?
13 Now, give up these men, these scoundrels, living in Gibeah, so that we can put them to death andwipe out this evil from Israel.' The Benjaminites, however, would not listen to their brother Israelites.	13 Rimetteteci gli uomini di Gabaa che hanno commessa così grande indegnità, affinchè sieno messi a morte, e tolgasi il male da Israele. Ma quelli non vollero ascoltar l'ambasciata de' loro fratelli, i figliuoli d'Israele:
14 The Benjaminites left their towns and mustered at Gibeah to fight the Israelites.	14 Ma da tutte le città della loro tribù si radunarono a Gabaa per soccorrerla, e combattere contro tutto il popolo d'Israele.
15 At the time, a count was made of the Benjaminites from the various towns: there were twenty-sixthousand swordsmen; and the count excluded the inhabitants of Gibeah.	15 E si contarono venticinque mila beniamiti atti alle armi, oltre gli abitanti di Gabaa;
16 In this great army there were seven hundred first-rate left-handers, every man of whom could sling astone at a hair and not miss it.	16 I quali erano in numero di settecento uomini fortissimi, che maneggiavan le armi colla sinistra, come colla destra, e colla fionda scagliavano sassi con tal destrezza, che avrebbon colpito in un capello, senza che la pietra scagliata torcesse in altra parte.
17 A count was also held of the men of Israel, excluding Benjamin: there were four hundred thousandmen, al experienced swordsmen.	17 E della nazione d'Israele, tolti i figliuoli di Beniamin, si contarono quattrocento mila uomini atti alle armi, e pronti a combattere.
18 They moved off, up to Bethel, to consult God. The Israelites put the question, 'Which of us is to gofirst into battle against the Benjaminites?' And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to go first.'	18 E si mossero, e andarono alla casa di Dio, cioè a Silo: e consultarono Dio, e dissero: Chi sarà nel nostro esercito il capitano a combattere contro i figliuoli di Beniamin? Rispose loro il Signore: Giuda sia il vostro capitano.
19 In the morning, the Israelites moved off and pitched their camp over against Gibeah.	19 E immediatamente i figliuoli d'Israele alzatisi di gran mattino andarono a porre il campo nelle vicinanze di Gabaa:
20 The men of Israel advanced to do battle with Benjamin; they drew up their battle line in front ofGibeah.	20 E indi avanzandosi per dar battaglia a' figliuoli di Beniamin cominciarono ad assalire la città.
21 But the Benjaminites sal ied out from Gibeah and that day massacred twenty-two thousand Israelites.	21 Ma i figliuoli di Beniamin usciti di Gabaa uccisero in quel dì ventidue mila uomini de' figliuoli d'Israele.
22 The army of the men of Israel then took fresh heart and again drew up their battle line in the sameplace as the day before.	22 E di nuovo i figliuoli d'Israele affidati al valore, e al numero loro, ordinaron l'esercito nel luogo stesso, in cui prima aveano combattuto:
23 The Israelites went and wept before Yahweh until evening; they then consulted Yahweh; they asked,'Shal we join battle again with the sons of our brother Benjamin?' Yahweh replied, 'March against him!'	23 Prima però di muoversi andarono a piangere dinanzi al Signore sino alla notte, e lo consultarono, e dissero: Debbo io tornare a combattere contro i miei fratelli figliuoli di Beniamin, o no? Ed egli rispose loro: Movetevi contro di loro, e attaccate la mischia.
24 This second day, the Israelites advanced against the Benjaminites,	24 Ed essendo andati il dì seguente i figliuoli d'Israele a combattere contro i figliuoli di Beniamin,
25 and, this second day, Benjamin sallied out from Gibeah to meet them and massacred anothereighteen thousand Israelites, al experienced swordsmen.	25 I figliuoli di Beniamin si scagliarono fuori delle porte di Gabaa; e investitili ne fecero tanta strage che ne stesero al suolo diciotto mila combattenti.
26 Then al the Israelites and the whole people went off to Bethel; they wept and sat in Yahweh'spresence; they fasted all day till the evening and presented burnt offerings and communion sacrifices beforeYahweh.	26 Per la qual cosa tutti i figliuoli d'Israele si portarono alla casa di Dio, e assisi piangevano dinanzi al Signore, e digiunarono quel dì sino alla sera e gli offerirono olocausti, e ostie pacifiche,
27 The Israelites then consulted Yahweh. In those days, the ark of the covenant of God was there,	27 E lo consultarone sopra lo stato loro. Ivi era in quel tempo l’arca del testamento del Signore.
28 and Phinehas son of Eleazer, son of Aaron was its minister at the time. They said, 'Ought I to go intobattle against the sons of my brother Benjamin again, or should I stop?' Yahweh replied, 'March! For tomorrow Ishall deliver him into your hands.'	28 E Phinees figliuolo di Eleazaro figliuolo di Aronne presiedeva alla casa (di Dio). Consultarono adunque il Signore, e dissero: Dobbiamo noi di nuovo andare a combattere contro i nostri fratelli, i figliuoli di Beniamin, o stare in riposo? Disse loro il Signore: Andate: perocché domane io li darò in vostro potere.
29 Israel then positioned troops in ambush al round Gibeah.	29 E i figliuoli d'lsraele posero un' imboscata intorno alla città di Gabaa:
30 On the third day the Israelites marched against the Benjaminites and, as before, drew up their line infront of Gibeah.	30 E questa terza volta ordinaron l'esercito contro a Beniamin come la prima, e la seconda.
31 The Benjaminites sal ied out to engage the people and let themselves be drawn away from the town.As before, they began by kil ing those of the people who were on the roads, one of which runs up to Bethel, andthe other to Gibeah through open country: some thirty men of Israel.	31 Ma i figliuoli di Beniamin nella stessa guisa si scagliarono arditamente fuori della città, e inseguirono per lungo tratto gli avversarii loro che fuggivano, talmente che ne ferirono, come nella prima, e nella seconda giornata, e tagliarono a pezzi quelli che scappavano per le due strade delle quali una va a Bethel, e l'altra conduce a Gabaa, e stesero al suolo circa trenta uomini:
32 The Benjaminites thought, 'We have beaten them, as we did the first time,' but the Israelites haddecided, 'We shal run away and draw them away from the town along the roads.'	32 Perocché credevano che cedessero secondo il solito. Ma eglino artifiziosamente fingendo di fuggire, ebbero mira di trarli lungi dalla città, e con simulata fuga condurgli a quelle strade che abbiamo dette.
33 All the Israelites then retreated and reformed at Baal-Tamar, while the Israelite troops in ambushsurged from their positions to the west of Gibeah.	33 E allora alzatisi tutti i figliuoli d’Israele da' loro posti, si ordinarono in battaglia nel luogo chiamato Baal-Thamar. E quelli parimente ch'erano nell'imboscata attorno alla città, cominciarono appoco, appoco a farsi vedere,
34 Ten thousand picked men, chosen from the whole of Israel, launched their attack on Gibeah. Thebattle was fierce; and the others knew nothing of the disaster impending.	34 E ad avanzarsi dalla parte settentrionale della città. E oltre a questo altri dieci mila uomini scelti da tutto Israele provocarono a battaglia gli abitanti della città. E divenne più atroce il conflitto contro i figliuoli di Beniamin: ed essi non compresero, come era preparata per essi da ogni parte la morte.
35 Yahweh defeated Benjamin before Israel and that day the Israelites kil ed twenty-five thousand onehundred men of Benjamin, al of them trained swordsmen.	35 E il Signore li flagellò dinanzi a' figliuoli d'Israele, i quali ne ammazzarono in quel giorno venticinque mila, e cento uomini, tutti valorosi, e buoni pel mestiero delle armi.
36 The Benjaminites saw that they were beaten. The Israelites had given ground to Benjamin, since theywere relying on the ambush which they had positioned close to Gibeah.	36 Or i figliuoli di Beniamin veggendosi perdenti, cominciarono a fuggire. La qual cosa avendo osservata i figliuoli d'Israele, fecero ad essi luogo, perchè fuggissero, affinchè incappassero nelle imboscate che aveano messe presso della città:
37 The troops in ambush threw themselves against Gibeah at top speed; fanning out, they put the wholetown to the sword.	37 E quelli della imboscata essendo repentinamente saltati fuora da' lor nascondigli, i Beniamiti fuggendo da loro che li mettevano a fil di spada, entrarono nella città, e vi fecer macello.
38 Now it had been agreed between the Israelites and those of the ambush that the latter should raise asmoke signal from the town,	38 Or i figliuoli d'Israele erano convenuti con quelli posti da loro in imboscata di questo segnale, che quando avesser presa la città, vi mettessero il fuoco, per fare intendere mediante il fumo che si leverebbe in alto, come la città era stata presa.
39 whereupon the Israelites in the thick of the battle would turn about. Benjamin began by kil ing some ofthe Israelites, about thirty men, and thought, 'We have certainly beaten them, as we did in the first battle.'	39 Or questo segnale l'osservarono i figliuoli d'Israele che tuttor combattevano (perocché i figliuoli di Beniamin credendo che si fuggissero, gli incalzavano fortemente avendo uccisi della loro gente trenta uomini).
40 But the signal, a column of smoke, began to rise from the town, and the Benjaminites looking backsaw the whole town going up in flames to the sky.	40 Or veggendo quelli la colonna di fumo che si alzava dalla città: e parimente i Beniamiti volgendosi indietro, veggendosi presa la città, e che si alzavano in alto le fiamme,
41 The Israelites then turned about, and the Benjaminites were seized with terror, for they saw thatdisaster had struck them.	41 Allora quelli che avean finto di fuggire, volgendo faccia resistevano con maggior forza. Lo che vedendo i figliuoli di Beniamin si diedero alla fuga;
42 They broke before the Israelite onslaught and made for the desert, but the fighters pressed themhard, while the others coming out of the town took and slaughtered them from the rear.	42 E cominciarono a pigliar la via del deserto: ma i loro nemici gl’inseguirono anche in quella parte: e di più furono investiti di fronte da quelli che aveano incendiata la città.
43 They hemmed in the Benjaminites, pursued them relentlessly, crushing them opposite Gibeah on theeast.	43 E così avvenne che dall'una e dall'altra parte erano trucidati da' nemici, e perivano senza avere scampo. E furono sterminati, e stesi al suolo dalla parte orientale di Gabaa.
44 Of Benjamin, eighteen thousand men fel , al of them brave men.	44 E quelli che rimasero uccisi in quello stesso luogo furon diciotto mila uomini combattenti, tutti di sommo valore.
45 They then turned tail and fled into the desert, towards the Rock of Rimmon. Five thousand of themwere picked off on the roads, and the rest were relentlessly pursued as far as Gideon, two thousand of thembeing kil ed.	45 Lo che avendo veduto gli avanzi di Beniamin fuggirono nel deserto, e andavano verso il masso chiamato Remmon: e sparsi com'erano, e fuggendo chi quà, di là, ne furon morti altri cinque mila. E inseguendogli ancor più innanzi ne uccisero altri due mila.
46 The total number of Benjaminites who fel that day was twenty-five thousand swordsmen, al of thembrave men.	46 Per la qual cosa tutti quelli che in diversi luoghi perirono de' Beniamiti furono venti cinque mila combattenti, espertissimi nel mestiere dell'armi.
47 Six hundred men, however, turned tail and escaped into the desert, to the Rock of Rimmon, andthere they stayed for four months.	47 Rimasero adunque di tutta la gente di Beniamin secento uomini che poterono salvarsi, e fuggirsi nel deserto; e si fermaron per quattro mesi sul masso di Remmon.
48 The men of Israel then went back to the Benjaminites, and put them to the sword-people, livestockand everything else that came their way in the town. And they fired all the towns involved.	48 Ma i figliuoli d'Israele tornati indietro trucidarono tutti gli avanzi della città dagli uomini fino alle bestie e tutte le città, e i villaggi di Beniamin furono preda del fuoco divoratore.
